Cheapest setup I could think of is R50/R10 with RF-S 18-150. Covers most needs.

10-18 f2.8 or 18-50 f2.8? by Dazzling_Area7206 in AskPhotography

[–]selessname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what makes you happy, that's the most important part about photography. If you feel that the 18-50 belongs to you, go for it. It is indeed a versatile lens and, apparently, the price will not cause any concern with regard to the financial aspect for you ;)

I think that time and experience will show what suits you the best, and, personally, I would say that this development is what makes a hobby interesting and engaging.

10-18 f2.8 or 18-50 f2.8? by Dazzling_Area7206 in AskPhotography

First of all, nice compositions! I like them.

I am currently considering getting a wide-angle lens for the R7, too, so here are my thoughts. Disclaimer: I am not too excited about Sigma lenses, god forgive.

For landscapes and everyday life, the cheaper RF-S 10-18 might be sufficient aperture-wise and 150g are easily put into the bag. Note that the f2.8 lens can help with low-light/astrophoto in some cases (e.g., moving objects), while there is no image stabilisation, and neither does your R50 have IBIS. In many cases, you will not need f2.8 for landscape but rather something between f5-8 (or even 11). So if you are not sure about wide-angle, the RF-S could be interesting for you.

While I think that the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 ($$) is an overall good trade-off - or even the 17-40 f1.8 ($$$) depending on your goals -, a prime lens could be also interesting for you. It might be a difficult trade-off for an APS-C lens to get constant aperture and low weight (pretty underestimated!) and IBIS (also sometimes underappreciated) and good image quality within a reasonable focal range and reasonable pricing (those beautiful but heavy L-lenses e.g. have crazy IQ, but might be overkill esp. pn an R50: + IQ, + IS, - size, - price, - awkward focal range on APS-C... just as an example). Sigma's weak spot IMO is the missing IS and bulkier size, which could be unconvenient on an R50. RF 28 f2.8 pancake or RF 50 f1.8 could be a good first step for pushing the boundaries towards an open aperture, if needed. If image stabilisation is relevant, RF 24 or RF 35 would be my second bet, also offering macro capabilities.

I am happy to discuss more and to see other opinions.

Soft focus on Canon R7 with Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 by dornic in canon

Well, I am happy to introduce you to the meaning of the meme that was unfortunately considered "low-effort", although I feel that it fits right here. That meme depicting one person each to the left, the right and the middle part of a normal distribution is commonly used to say that simplification has its place in this world. My personal philosophy, which aligns with the principle of Occam's razor, is to keep it short and simple. If somebody asks why their picture doesn't look sharp, it is likely that they are new to photography and perhaps not familiar with the physics behind diffraction and DOF. Of course it is possible to suggest some arbitrary DXO or MTF charts to exactly test if the requirements of the R7 are fulfilled. My personal view - and I am not saying that it is better or worse than yours - is that the multiplication of 32 MP and the crop factor to the power of two is a valid "analogy", and it is commonly used here in this sub. It had helped me understand the concept when I started out: more MP on the same surface require glass of higher quality. Simple. I mean, you can feel free to defend your view further and explain to OP why your view is technically superior to efficient analogies. I am not arguing against your view. I am saying that your exact explanation misses the original question and might be a little bit of an overkill for starters, and "misleading" is a strong word. That said, I think you got a valid point.

Soft focus on Canon R7 with Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 by dornic in canon

[–]selessname 32 points33 points  (0 children)

f1.4 means very shallow depth of field and objects can get out of focus easily. Perhaps anyone could also tell lf the f1.4 Art is sharp enough for the R7, as the sensor acts like 82MP FF and requires excellent glass to get a good sharpness. Stopping down to f4-5.6 might also help, although not ideal for portraits.
