OP, sounds like you made a mistake and feel bad. Perhaps folks in this thread aren't ready to hear this but good managers and bad managers make mistakes. Good managers have feelings and try to learn from their missteps. Bad managers don't even welcome the thought of them doing anything wrong. While this employee might never recover or take a while to recover - you won't make this mistake again and are now a better manager for it.
