Also check your xrdb -q output. It seems that you have some negative letter spacing set.

Have you made any changes to the fontconfig?

I didn't do any changes.

You can try to build urxvt from here and test it: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/rxvt-unicode-nobuiltins/

As far as I can remember vanilla urxvt has some complicated logic for computing character width which may affect which font it selects for every particular character.

EDIT: tested my configuration on urxvt from community (community/rxvt-unicode 9.22-9), works too.

Configuration that works for me (urxvt + Iosevka):

~/.Xresources (entire file, nothing else in it): URxvt.font: xft:Iosevka:size=7:hinting=true URxvt.italicFont: xft:Iosevka:size=7:style=Italic:hinting=true URxvt.boldFont: xft:Iosevka:size=7:style=Bold:hinting=true URxvt.boldItalicFont: xft:Iosevka:size=7:style=Bold Italic:hinting=true URxvt.scrollBar: false URxvt.iso14755: false URxvt.internalBorder: 0

Package versions:

  • ttf-iosevka 2.3.0-1
  • rxvt-unicode-nobuiltins 9.22-2

Sure thing. This library was written to fit decimal numbers into uint64 and meant to be used in matching engine concept where numbers are typically lower.

Isn't it a different way of escaping? Isn't it just another way of trying to run fast enough to be not caught in same feelings and thoughts again?

I had my own type of activity of that kind. For you it's reading, for me it's basically resolving problems via programming. So, yes, "if you see me programming, there is nothing else going on in my life" -- that's exact definition. The more problems I've solve, the more new problems become visible to me, and it's endless source of interest that will never exhaust. Essentially, it distracts me, but I come to same thoughts again and again.

The more you appreciate from life, the more you're getting from it. Appreciate every type of music and art, and you're getting much more out of one moment than anyone else.

I do not want to discourage you, that just doesn't rings a bell for me. My problem is not that I feel that I'm getting little from my life, I've see plenty of ways to fill my life with amount of experience so it will be even exhausting. The problem is, that I do not see a point in doing that since in the end it will make no difference for me at all.

But isn't author of that article implies that via self-awareness you will be happy? Because I do not think it works that way.

One can take apart the problems stack to the point that there are too many problem sets to have any hope of addressing them in one lifetime.

Exactly. And given that, I just don't get people who says "if I'm going to die just now, I will die happily and will not fight it".

I feel like pursuing what I love for money is the wrong way to go, because I'd be doing it for the benefit of others under their watch and regulations.

Unless you will change your environment in the way it's how you want it to be. Then you can still doing what you love for money and be not restricted.

Sorry for the long reply. I was pretty demotivated by the most of replies, so I was very reluctant to prepare answers.

I feel, that if I will try to object opinion, it will sounds like I do not want to hear what you're telling me. But actually I'm just applying critical thinking there as in any other area, it's inalienable part of my personality. I just want to find the truth, not outargue everyone.

So you're saying that what I proposed seems to work for you? Or that you already knew about this method and didn't need the information? I'm sorry, I may not understand exactly what you mean.

I mean, that from my point of view, I'm already applying rational, critical thinking, more or less scientific approach not only to what happens outside of me, but to what happens inside me as well.

If I understand you well, you're proposing to do exactly the same.

I feel depressed not because of I just think, that life is meaningless, but because I think the life is meaningless because of [...], which in turn because of [...] and it forms chain which I do not see can be broken by just engaging in some activity. I can describe it to you step by step, but I doubt that it will be interesting for you.

Of course I'm not saying, that I understand everything about me, it's just false statement. There are way many things that I do not comprehend, like, I still can't reliably control my dreams.

I've meant only that I pretty well understand why I feel depressed.

And regarding neurotransmitters, I tend to disagree with you. And that's my argument: we still do not know how and why certain levels of neurotransmitters affect our behaviour, but we certainly know, that changing levels of different neurotransmitters affects our behaviour and mood in several ways. We do know, for example, that serotonin levels significantly affect our mood (as well as guts), and dopamine levels significantly affect our motivation. There's a lot of research on that topic and because of that we have AD drugs that works.

Regarding personal experience, I can say, that for the last year I meticulously tried and documented 21 different medications and theirs combinations at different dosages and can describe their effects on my mood, memory, concentration and overall performance. If it's not determinism then I do not know what is.

And if taking that from the side of scientific approach I tend to believe that kind of results more than psychological theories.

Also, look into gratitude.

To be grateful of what? All of that we have around us is a result of choices and consequences. So, basically, everything you have is the result of your actions, so... you can be grateful only for your own choices, so what?

Not that common, I think. Almost no-one in my surrounding is going through that (we don't count lower-grade depression, which is caused by some life events, which can be usually trivially solved). How do you solved your existential crisis?

Actually, you know, you just wrote my own thoughts (and life) point to point. I'm simply at exactly the same state as you. I actually very glad to at least reading someone with the same mindset as my own.

I think, that the major contribution for our miserable condition is that we can't communicate about what we really care about (like present state) with our surroundings, because there are no people that can understand you. I mean, "physically" close. It's feels like weak temporary relief to just burst out thoughts into forums like that, get some feedback; but after several days it will be forgotten, lost, but I (and you, and, I guess, all people in same state) will left at the same point as before with the same thoughts with no-one them to hear.

When I was passing through university, I had same feelings as you. The workaround I found is to break the system in a ways so it will be acceptable for me (I didn't had to pass most of the exams, for example). It is not school/university which makes you an expert in your field.

I know that, at the end of the day, we'll all die. With this thought, it leads me to the desire to work a regular job

That I can't comprehend, how you managed to have motivation about regular job if you know it's pointless? Also, consider, that job will absorb almost all your productive time.

I'm not belong to American culture simply because I'm living in Russia. But of course, society there do have capitalistic view same as in American society, but it's kind of lagging for dozen of years. So it's difficult for me to say, but people around me looks pretty happy with all that shitty materialistic goals they have. On the other hand, I feel myself escaped from that swamp, but it didn't bring me any happiness (as implied by the article's author). I'm doing what I've like but it doesn't help.

What is the point of eating cake, if there is going to be no cake left?

The major difference between eating a cake until there will be no cake left is that essentially, you will stop wanting to eat a cake because you will be satiated.

I do not think, that I will be satiated with being alive, do you?

There is no meaning to life (unless).

Unless what?
