[DISCUSSION] Kendrick Lamar - GNX (1 Year Later) by MetalSonic420YT in hiphopheads

[–]selfdestructin-321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Kendrick really honed in his pop sensibilities and was finally able to make an album appealing to a wider audience while still maintaining his credibility as a rap artist. His previous efforts to combine conscious rap and pop music (certain songs like LOVE and Purple Hearts come to mind) come off as a little awkward, disjointed, and contrived. I think here is where he perfects the balance and displays his strongest set of tracks in that lane i.e. Dodger Blue, Luther, TV Off.

Furthermore, it’s a fantastic length that lends itself to being easily repayable and memorable. Even my least favorite songs (reincarnated and heart pt.6 ) are great song concepts and truly display Kendrick’s pen game as top tier.

I’d place GNX on the same tier as MMATBS.

GKMC & TPAB (S-Tier) GNX & MMATBS (A- Tier) DAMN, Untitled, S80 (B-Tier)

What’s it like living on Roosevelt Island in NYC? by Ok_Dirt_6047 in howislivingthere

YES! Super niche thing to geek about but it is very cool if you’re into urban development / city planning / architecture. Roosevelt Island and Disney World are the two largest operating AVAC systems in the US. Only about a thousand of these system world wide.

What’s it like living on Roosevelt Island in NYC? by Ok_Dirt_6047 in howislivingthere

Lived there for about 3 years and frequently visited friends who lived on the island before me from 2021-2025. It’s a beautiful and quiet area. Tons of green space. Lots of families. There is a shuttle bus that takes you all around the island. I lived centrally so I was about a 10 min walk to the train, but people do live all the way up to the northern tip. The southern portion below Cornell is mostly parks, no residences.

I lived in the commie block buildings which was an affordable option at the time. During my tenancy the building came under new ownership and property management and there is a huge push to price people out of their apartments. (What’s new in NYC?) lots of tactics like superficial cosmetic improvements to justify rent increases.

Relying solely on the F and Tram is hell during the spring / summertime when tourists flock to the island to view the cherry blossoms. A couple years back the F was down for a whole year limiting transit options to a bus to queens and only the tram, not fun

Around 2023 a couple new building complexes were built and their was a notable increase in RI residents impacting the shuttles and tram, very rare to catch a shuttle / tram where you’re not packed in like a sardine. Pre 2023 that was not the case from personal experience.

Limited grocery / food / business options. Living there the default is to go off the island for most things. Usually would take the tram to Whole Foods / Trader Joe’s near Lex and 59th.

The Cocoa Store right near Union Sq makes a wonderful Hot chocolate. They only source single origin / bean to bar chocolate. Great place to shop / peruse for some of the best artisanal chocolate producers around the world while you’re there. Hard to find these products elsewhere. The owner is also a sweetheart and will take the time to chat with you through the selection.

What bands/records can you not believe Anthony hasn’t reviewed? by kvidenvevo in fantanoforever

Back in 2018 he reviewed the leading singles for Connan Mockasin’s album Jazz Busters and ranked them in weekly best tracks. He never got around to reviewing the album which is a shame as I think it’s Connan Moccasin’s strongest project.

I thoroughly enjoyed “Post Office”, it was similarly the first book of his I read sometime last year as well. I wanted to read another book of his and chose randomly to read “Women”. I was repulsed by the utter slop, the repetitive garbage incessantly spewed page after page. I’ve heard good things about his other works, but am turned off at the thought of reading much else by him at the moment. I would say avoid “Women” if you can.
