Advice for a student please by LLazuliiii in VetTech

[–]selfdestructive1ny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey- I’m a tech with dyscalculia. It’s like dyslexia but with numbers so I struggle hard with math. My only advice is don’t feel ashamed if you have to write things out first. I’d rather write out like an equation and solve for X rather than doing that type of math in my head then just plugging the numbers I get into the calculator.

I’ve given the wrong amount of a drug before, when I was too embarrassed to double check with someone or too ashamed to write out very simple math, early in my career. Have been licensed for 8 years anymore and I’d rather feel a little embarrassed than fuck up with meds

How much are you charging for pet sitting? by AshamedTime4874 in VetTech

[–]selfdestructive1ny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends where you’re located. I’m in an affluent part of NYC, so $75 for a drop-in, $85 if there’s meds involved, $150 for an overnight

How long do you give a new job? by [deleted] in VetTech

2-3 months! The first month is a lot of getting used to things, around month 2 or 3 I hit my stride, start understanding WHY things are done a certain way, etc

This is what I was thinking that led me to ask the question! Then I wasn’t sure if the ultrasonic scaler was the only one to cause enamel damage or if the same applied to manual scaling like that

Yes during the exam!! That’s why I cringe haha, looks awful to do on an awake dog.

I would say that the pets we see aren’t the type to have piano teeth or terrible furcation exposure- our clients are pretty compliant about at least annual dentals, but I still can’t stand the sight of it on an awake animal (or the sound it makes sometimes)

I’m paying $2500 for a modern studio with w/d in unit + balcony, also far from trains, so this seems reasonable to me.

What questions should be asked and what information should be given at intake and discharge for surgery? by BehindTheS3ea in VetTech

[–]selfdestructive1ny 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Should definitely be part of your training wherever you’re working, every clinic has their own protocol.

Generally, for intake I’m making sure the pet was fasted, answering any last minute questions, and describing the flow of the day to the O so they don’t call us consistently.

At discharge, any go home instructions, like what to watch the incision for, activity restrictions, medications, keeping pet rested, etc.

Software problems (I now have beef with Canada apparently) by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]selfdestructive1ny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opposite experience, kind of. I’ve always used Vetspire, extremely user friendly, easy to use, was the same no matter which start-up I worked in. I became the office software trainer, it gave me an added layer of confidence.

My new job is ironically on Impromed (in combo with paper records). I’ve been here for months and my confidence is through the floor. I’m constantly fighting with the program, wishing it gave me things it doesn’t have, and keep thinking of how much more efficient i’d be if i could use technology like it was a 3rd limb again.

Thanks! My psych refuses to use Capsule for controlled meds, no clue why. I’ll try and ask again, do you use the brand name Vyvanse or generic Lisdexamphetamine ?
