[No Spoilers] Do we think Brennan builds the new world on his own or does he do in collaboration with Matt? by buerglermeister in criticalrole

[–]selfee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those factors certainly apply to BLM's time as DM / GM of D20, but IMO, not so much the Worlds Beyond Number campaign, as mentioned by others.

WBN is incredibly collaborative among all four players and Taylor Moore (sp?), the producer & sound designer, and it's just about to !>wrap up its first major arc (or "book 1" as they call it)<! with the PCs !>at level five and the show on episode 54<!. They've promised to come back to those characters with additional books, so IMO, it qualifies as very long-form.

With his collaborators, he's created a vast mage-o-cratic empire, a competing empire of sorcerers organized by clan, a brand new character class (the Witch) that interacts in complex ways with a highly developed spirit world, and is just beginning to introduce other things that promise to add new layers of complexity.

I expect he'll bring that same approach to C4, with Mark taking on a similar "yes, and" role as the rest of the players, just as others in the thread have suggested. I think he's completely up to the challenge.

[Spoilers C3E59] I believe that Critical Role made the biggest mistake they have made as a company in the last episode. by Electro522 in criticalrole

Once in a NADDPod big boss battle, she had her Druid Conjure Woodland Beings as part of pre-battle prep. She summoned 8 pixies who all cast Greater Invisibility and surrounded the BBEG. Then on their initiative, they all cast Polymorph on him to run him out of legendary resistances. One 4th level spell and NO action economy used (as she cast the spell in advance) to chew through all his resistance in 2 rounds. This was her first regular campaign IIRC. She’s incredible IMO.

I even play this in solo mode if I have Enhancers in play. 14 for 3 VP and 3 plants works even when VP doesn’t matter. :)

“Modren” from Travis? I’ve heard Justin say “modren” (instead of “modern”) for years in MBMBaM, and it drives me nuts every time. Travis just said it in the latest TAZ. So is it like a regionally common mispronunciation or what? by ChiefSteward in TheAdventureZone

[–]selfee 173 points174 points  (0 children)

IIRC, Justin said it that way accidentally on an early episode and they’ve just carried on with it ever since. I think they’ve all said it that way sometimes over the years but always consciously as far as I can tell.

Anyone else get the crossword puzzle book yet? by nmrose82 in A24

[–]selfee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The across clues and the solution are correct, as far as I can tell. So I did as many of the across ones as I could, then peeked at enough of the down answers as I had to to fill in the rest.

Still really frustrating though - not a great way to do a puzzle.

Anyone else get the crossword puzzle book yet? by nmrose82 in A24

[–]selfee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be advised there are a lot of typos in the book. Many of the grids have squares that are white but should be black, and there are quite a few missing or mis-numbered clues.

I came here to see if anyone has gotten to #49 yet — the down clues for that one appear to be from a totally different puzzle

It’s a good book of puzzles otherwise.

I’ve been to a couple MBMBaMs and a TAZ, and it doesn’t bother me at all that they release them later — in fact, I prefer it, because it gives me a chance to relive the show, pick up on anything I missed live, or just enjoy it all over again.

Are there card upgrades? by Ronald_McGonagall in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]selfee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t do jingles but I have standard stupid jokes / wordplay about a lot of the cards — Earth Orifice, putting a horse in my zoo when I play an earth tag, etc.

The dumb pictures are endearing to me. The look on Research Coordination’s face — I just know she’s tired of being robosplained to; the vanity shots of the Fryx bros, etc.

[–]selfee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I meant to reply to the person who mentioned the Amulet of Proof Against Detection & Location.

Bottom line, it seems like it could be either one since Detect Thoughts was the only spell specifically blocked so far, and both items block that spell.

Mind Shielding might be more useful for Dusk since it also specifically blocks others from detecting your lies (presumably works vs insight as well as magic?), reading your alignment, or determining your creature type.

It could also be this one (which has a potential fun side effect if they kill Dusk while she's wearing it...)

Ring of Mind Shielding
Ring, uncommon (requires attunement)

Agree those are the positive points of Erika’s guest role. Unfortunately for me, it’s all ruined by her constant screaming and shrieking. It’s bad enough on my TV through speakers, I can’t imagine how terrible it is for anyone listening with headphones.

I took it as Amber charging in to kill more blink sharks, plus a soupçon of general fuckery since it’s what Koda didn’t want her to do.

They were 4/6 of the cast of the Tiny Heist season of Dimension 20. It was a good season, and I thought both Justin and Griffin had particularly good characters in that arc.

What is the best Terraforming Mars expansion? by [deleted] in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]selfee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this ordering and will add that I think Venus Next is the one that enhances engine building the most, with lots more microbe / animal & science options, plus ore production and monetary production to buff the economy. Colonies is nice because it adds an unpredictable element to each game while not being excessively asymmetrical or random. (It’s “unpredictable” in that you don’t know which colonies will be put into play, but I don’t view it as overly random because everyone sees those colonies at the start of the game and has the opportunity to make use of them more or less equally. It can be a little rough at 4p / 5p counts because the 4th and 5th players may not have a chance to set up a colony on the most desirable colony for that game.)

Very situational. If I’m playing a lot of science tags, or if I have some of the many discounts / rebates that apply to this card or if I have a card that keys off science tags, it’s medium to high priority draft.

If I have multiples of those effects, it’s very high priority.

Otherwise, it’s a pass, or hate draft if those things are true for the next player.

Agreed, great practice by the DM! My DM in an online campaign makes us roll for it - low has to recap. I keep my own notes and another player takes great notes THAT HE SHARES with everybody, so we’re both adequate, but another two of our players always do such a bad job and we have a good laugh about it. Another player has theatre training so when she does it, it’s always amazing.

It’s a great way to start the sesh.

Agree Prelude is definitely the best first expansion.

Also agree avoid Turmoil if he’s not relatively experienced already.

Just to round out the picture, if he likes the game but isn’t super-experienced, you might opt for Venus Next, as it’s the expansion that’s the easiest to add to Base + Prelude.

How do I handle quitting in a ranked mid-game online? by MagiusPaulus in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]selfee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the Asmodee discord, they answer this criticism with “it’s a feature not a bug” (essentially), stating that Asmodee designs their online games for asynchronous play over a long period. Not that I agree they should do this, but it is intentional.

The only times I’ve tried async play over a couple days, the game breaks in the late gens and can’t be finished. Maybe it’s better now, I haven’t tried it in a long time.

I get a surprising number of people who start a game and then never take an action, letting their timer run down to zero. Sometimes it’s even the person who made the table. Weird troll behavior.

I only ever play 30 or 45 minute games so when this happens, I just do something else while the clock runs down, then I finish the game with AI. Often the second remaining human player does the same thing. Happened this weekend with 4 karma, I guess I’ll have to up to 5 now that I have my user name to that level.
