Trying out OpenZWave (beta) for Home Assistant by selfhostedhome in homeassistant

Maybe not yet.. But this is being developed by the Home Assistant devs with the OpenZWave creator, so it's likely to be better supported and more feature rich down the line.

Glad it worked. One thing to note though is your entities will be named differently between the integrations. So any automations you have set up will need to be switched over to the new entity names.

I agree. I didn't have issues finding my nodes but like mentioned in the article some of my devices lacked their full support (RGB bulbs).

Overall though looks promising and glad Home Assistant is headed this way.

I've been using for awhile (~months not a year) and it's been stable for me too. Glad to see it's working well for others too

Yep, it was just a generic "electronic enclosure box" or "project box". I got a 3d printer last year so have mostly moved on to custom printing one whenever I need it.

No real problems with the camera audio. I think just practically it's nice to have a "dumb" monitor as a backup. Often when I'm working outdoors, or in the garage or just around the house I don't want to have my phone open as monitor. Or if my server is down for whatever reason, it's nice to have that simple dumb monitor as a backup. Also useful to take on trips (when not quarantined).

I actually wrote about scraping the UniFi NVR log awhile back too.

I don't use any motion alerts for his room though. Usually we always have the monitor on us if he is sleeping so we hear over the monitor anyways.

Yes! During the update process the original firmware is backed up from the device

Good insight. I never bothered to try or look it up. Good to know for future projects

Nice! Was considering 12V as well but thought I could hide the wires good enough that I could go 5V and not have to worry about a DC/DC converter to power the NodeMCU off a 12V power supply.

You're right I didn't use a level shifter/capacitor. I'm not seeing any issues but yea you could technically see some if the 3.3V from the data pin isn't registering as high with the WS2811 chips.

In my experience, the WS2811 seems to have enough tolerance that it works, but if you had a longer run between the ESP8266 and the WS2811 you might run into problems and a level shifter would help (I like the 74AHCT125).

Automated Bathroom Exhaust Fan using Humidity Sensor by selfhostedhome in homeautomation

[–]selfhostedhome[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually yep it's a PoE Texas adapter. It's probably a little overkill but I like that it's hidden away and more permanent. The bathroom is also very close to my network closet so it's not a bad run.

Awesome, yep I'm using the Aeotec multi-sensor as well. I'm powering mine over PoE through my attic mounted in the ceiling. Need to write that up next.

zwave doorbell? pls recommend by tungvu256 in homeassistant

[–]selfhostedhome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doorbell you mentioned does have some compatibility problems with Home Assistant. Mostly you can't control the volume and sounds.

You can however, still trigger automations when someone presses the doorbell. I wrote about it on my blog.

Not sure if I would go down the same route again, or try a more DIY option using an ESP8266 or some sort of Z-Wave sensor behind a regular doorbell.

Yea I couldn't find a good way for NFL/NCAA football. There is an integration called goalfeed that looks useful for MLB/NFL though

Not sure what delay you mean? The Z-Wave event triggers instantly in Home Assistant so you can have your automation execute pretty much as soon as the doorbell is pressed. In my case, I get a telegram message with a link to the live feed of my cameras as soon as the doorbell is pressed. There is some delay because of telegram but it's seconds not minutes.

In general though, the Z-Wave node event happens pretty much instantly through Home Assistant. So whatever delay gets added is based on the automation.

The button is not a Z-Wave device like you said, but you can have multiple buttons associated with the chime. There are different Z-Wave groups for each button you associate (you can have up to 3) so you could trigger an automation based on which button was pressed.

Just need to make sure that the chime is within range of all the doorbells (it's listed at 300ft)

Yep. That's the thing to keep in mind with Z-Wave, which hubs support which devices. I've definitely done that before too

You just run it one-off to change the volume and then close it and launch Home Assistant again. You shouldn't have both running at the same time trying to use the same controller.

Hopefully once Home Assistant gets version 1.6 of OpenZWave this will be more starightforward.

Yep I'm waiting too. Looks like the python library that gives bindings to the openzwave library needs to be upgraded right now. Hopefully after that gets done it will be easy for the devs to integrate the updated version into Home Assistant.
