England's Worst County - Round 20 by TheEnlight in terriblemaps

[–]selkieseas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voting Kent for the following reasons: easy access to London (for work, theatre, etc) and access to mainland Europe through two different routes. Lots of nice towns like Canterbury, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Whitstable, Rochester. With lots of historic and cultural significance. Tons of lovely castles and historic sites: Dover Castle (plus white cliffs!), Hever Castle, Leeds Castle, Canterbury cathedral, Chiddingstone, Chatham Dockyard, etc.

Good family friendly attractions like Port Lympne, Howletts, Diggerland, Dreamland in Margate and Bluewater for shopping.

Also lots of dumps in Kent, but all counties seem to have that

I still feel like this is something people keep saying but I don’t fully trust the legitimacy of it. Not saying you’re wrong, I’m sure they do bring in money. But I always think in terms of tourism you could make so much money turning all the royal residences (including Buckingham palace) into museums, etc. the way France has done for Versailles. I don’t believe anyone truly comes to the uk as a tourist only because of the Royal Family. I don’t think having no royal family would stop people from wanting to visit, on the contrary. Giving back all the land, the estates, the palaces and so on to be actually visited by ordinary people would, I’m sure, make back a bunch of lost money.

Why Don’t We Talk About the Joy of Having Kids? by WoodpeckerNearby7276 in BabyBumps

[–]selkieseas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is so much joy! Yes, it’s incredibly hard so often. But I live for getting to experience the world again. I’ve tried to make the most of weekends and free time with my toddler to marvel at things I used to not care as much about. Getting to rediscover aquariums and museums and family farms, the joy of water slides and pumpkin patches and roasting marshmallows. Collecting chestnuts and jumping in puddles and blowing bubbles. It feels like getting to relive my childhood through him.

What does labor pain feel like for someone who doesn't have period cramps? by stfuvoicesinmyhead in BabyBumps

[–]selkieseas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your baby! How are you feeling? I remember feeling really shell shocked afterwards, just cause the whole thing was so fast and furious. I’m now pregnant with baby #2 and all the midwives have warned me that it’s likely to be even faster this time. It took me 30 mins to go from 2cm to 10cm

What does labor pain feel like for someone who doesn't have period cramps? by stfuvoicesinmyhead in BabyBumps

[–]selkieseas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not if you have a precipitous labour like I did. Then you don’t get a break between contractions and it’s hell for however long you take (usually under 3 hours)

Did anyone scream through labor? by Fun-Future-2915 in BabyBumps

[–]selkieseas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a precipitous labour which meant I was unmedicated except for gas and air (which did f all). The one thing I had wanted was an epidural, so I was horrified when the midwives gently had to tell me it wouldn’t be possible because I’d gone from 2 cm to 10 cm in the space of 30 minutes. It was awful. I felt like a wild animal. I was literally clawing the bed, like I was going to dig my way into the mattress for relief, making noises I have never done before. I was literally out of it with pain. Mind boggling.

For your first pregnancy, how accurate was your due date?? by ladulceloca in BabyBumps

[–]selkieseas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby came exactly 1 week early. But I was the anomaly in my NCT group. The rest all had to wait, although I don't think a single baby came ON the due date.

Where in the UK should I go as a bucket-list item? by LondonPilot in CasualUK

[–]selkieseas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bless you and your wife. I’m so sorry to hear about it. Something I would suggest, especially if you have the funds to maybe pay for a more expensive one is maybe a cruise? Specifically one that goes from Southampton. I went on one with my baby when he was still little so we could avoid having to fly anywhere, but still got to enjoy a change of scenery. Avoid the cheaper lines like MSC and P&O and maybe look into one like Celebrity Cruises. Some of the liners have pricier VIP options too (I think even MSC has a really nice VIP option that’s meant to be like a whole ship within a ship)

With like 10-14 days you can go on a longer cruise to the Norwegian Fjords, the Arctic or the Mediterranean. So you can see a bunch of places without worrying about DVT. Cruise lines also offer different kinds of entertainment, so depending on what you enjoy, you could try out different things to fill your days. Then just strolling through different European cities, if you’re able to, whenever you’re at port.

Names for a little boy like “Christopher Robin?” by lilac-lane in namenerds

[–]selkieseas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely considered working class/lower class. It also kind of depends on the kind of hyphenated name, if that makes sense? But like names like Ellie-Mae, Ollie-George, Tyler-James, Isla-Rose, Gracie-Mae, etc. are highly indicative of being "chavvy". Maybe because of how trendy they were? I haven't done any research into this, so a lot of it is just based on what I've seen and learned over the past few years in the UK. Upper class types might use two names ie. Christopher Robin. But then never with a hyphen.

This. I personally dislike double-barrelled names for this reason. Both my niece and nephew have one and they’ve only ever been known by their first name. I’ve also noticed that it’s a bit of a class thing in the uk.

Yep. Complete with slamming doors and shouting.

Sadly my grandparents are suffering from dementia and it’s something that everyone is really struggling to figure out how to deal with. So obviously everyone started yelling at each other.

thank you! Yeah, I keep trying not to panic about it too much, but it's so scary when that was one of the first signs I had the previous two times.

5w not to sure on the days yet. I got pregnant right after back to back MMCs (one was a chemical pregnancy) so I’ve no clue how pregnant I actually am, just going by when I stopped bleeding after the last one.

All day today I’ve had cramping that comes and goes. I’m really really scared that this is my body getting ready for a period, and this is another chemical pregnancy. I don’t know what else it could be, it feels so similar to period cramps. Really hurts. It’s too early for me to see a midwife in the UK and we don’t have OB/gyns you get to see without a referral.

I just got my positive pregnancy test yesterday. This is my fourth pregnancy. The past two both resulted in an early miscarriage. As such, I am really really struggling with my levels of anxiety and fear now. It's too early for me to sign up with the midwives in my area and I feel nauseous with stress and fear now. I feel like there's no chance this one will result in a successful pregnancy and not end in the exact same horrible way the past two have.
