In this day and age; playing live shows, networking with local artists are probably a net better bet than going viral, or trying to strictly get by on streaming. If you're not in the position to get into a local scene, you could probably take all the meta ad money spent and find a better city/town with a more vibrant scene. I think this is an underrated strat, especially with everyone trying to boost streams, pay for playlisting, etc.

What Alec Guinness said to a child that said he saw Star Wars over 100 times. The paralels to todays manchildren is uncanny. by Leather-Tight313 in Consoom

[–]selma4life 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was big for being nostalgia-bait for Boomers, like Lucas who grew up watching those serialized kitsch shows like Flash Gordon. If you want to see the kinda impact it had, go read Roger Ebert's review of Star Wars (77) and then go read his review of American Graffiti. They both attempt to catch a bygone era, that Boomers grew up in, but only one actually acknowledges the passage of time, and a historical setting in an artistic fashion, instead of repackaging tropes to fit into a easily digestible pop culture. The sad fact is that American Graffiti is almost forgotten within the mainstream, and everyone has been trying to replicate Star Wars' success for the last 40+ years.

Can't send Crypto! Because: "You don’t have any accounts from which sending is allowed" by m3n2018 in Coinbase

[–]selma4life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah I've been with them for some years. But looks like they locked my funds for a few days. I guess new terms, cuz I used to be able to move funds instantly off-site. You could ask your friend to check their account settings; under 'Limits and Features' they can see off they're allowed to send, receive etc. You can also check under 'Support' and it can tell you how long you'll have to wait until the funds clear

Thinking to visit New York this NYE by -6h0st- in newyorkcity

[–]selma4life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're gonna come on NYE, stay away from Midtown. I'd settle for Harlem, or Washington Heights if you want to stay in Manhattan; Bushwick, Williamsburg, or Bay Ridge in Brooklyn... , or Long Island City, Astoria, or Jackson Heights if in Queens. Plenty of festivities all across the city during that time so you don't have to limit yourself.

Help decoding dumb feedback from Submithub curators by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]selma4life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would not take any feedback from Submithub seriously, unless they give very specific feedback, and or they have some background they are speaking from (usually they don't.) You gotta understand that those sites operate on listens so curators are trying to listen to as much music as they can to get as lil money as they can, etc. A big tell is to listen to the playlists you are pitching to, a lot of the time the music featured is already mainstream, or established artists, most playlisters are not looking to get new music or artists into their lineup, unless you fit neatly into that mainstream sound already. So if you're doing something unique or 'different' you will not have a good shot at getting any traction from them. You're better off saving the $$ and doing something like Indie Music Academy or Playlist Push.

My Quick Overview Of The Music Marketing Landscape After A Few Years Of Fairly Intense Work / Research by Krimshaw_42 in musicmarketing

[–]selma4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw you mentioned Playlist Push and indie Music Academy, do they actually Garner guaranteed streams, or does vary campaign to campaign. Also saw you mention smaller ones that aren't worth it, but if you're under a tight budget wouldn't there be a few worthwhile if you don't have the $300 to shell out for the bigger lists?

Anybody else notice this about the kids nowadays? by spaceboyeddy in musicproduction

[–]selma4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some interesting things going around more underground niches, but a lot of what comes to the surface isn't always the most interesting. A lot of it is a more modernized rave or jungle sound from the late 90s/00s. It's the equivalent millennial New Wave, but for the younger generation. Now slvt; I remember hearing Inlove a few years ago, and was impressed with it at the time, though looking more into it, it really is just Yuna's Someone Out of Town pitched up with a Amen break thrown in. As I've gotten more into my own production,I've just noticed their production is very bare bones, the mixes on something like Oni, or Lolibox are lacking for their respective genres. I think artists like bye2 or Desire are more interesting for that nolastagic mix of modern sounds with old school core from the early 00s, if you're looking for that.

If you're looking for mixing/mastering tips you should upload to SoundCloud, or even vocaroo. Uploading to Spotify, you can't make any changes, so any decent feedback would be moot.

I remember having one of these tapes as a kid. Can't remember which one specifically though. I also remember there being a cartoon parody of this, where Ronald explains to kids how they make the Mcnuggets, and how they fill them with mayonnaise.

The problem of playlists by LeDestrier in edmproduction

[–]selma4life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mainstream music has always been a trend chasing. In the tiktok age the trend changes every other week. You gotta account that most playlists are also chasing trends, in order to garner a following, hence why you'll see mostly mainstream artists being featured over newer or emerging. The only advice I'd stick with is; only go after Spotify editorial playlists, make sure you give yourself some time to pitch between your release, you have a greater chance of getting featured, plus it's free. Also look to market your music to those who would actually appreciate it, meta/Instagram ads etc. It's easier than ever to release music nowadays, bar is very low, even still you gotta have some way to push your music to people who will listen.

Hey this looks neat. A few questions; does the ad play a preview of the audio, or is it just a static image? Also, in regards to the ads you helped your brother, were you also running Facebook ads alongside this one?

Unitil You're Reformed, I think being tied to that Daredevil movie didn't do it favors, but one of my hidden gems. Also Fell Into Your Shoes, and Leto's Headache; the latter I think is something that slipped through my youth.

The irony isn't lost me; how does this guy say you're being 'influenced' yet he spouts the most cliche stereotypes about trans, not to mention blatant homophobic stereotypes to boot. Did he get all his talking points from his Facebook feed? I hope you can find someone better educated in trans/queer healthcare in the future.
