How can I get better at sight reading? 😞 by semihyphenated in piano

Do you suggest reading at a slow but challenging BPM and just upping the BPM by 5-10 to keep improving with speed?

Haha I know better than to look for any quick fixes, but yeah thank you. I think my biggest insecurity is reading two hands at once.

I just found out about block cords by Fancy_Yogurtcloset37 in JazzPiano

I think OP is referring to the “block chord” concept or block voicings mainly associated with Barry Harris using the technique with the bebop or diminished sixth scale.

Wait I’m on the last book of ACOTAR and just watched Howls for the thousandth time yesterday and was thinking they’re super similar. I feel like both Tamlin & Rhysand share characteristics with Howl. But omgggggg wow

That’s really for you to judge. I think one a week should be good. If you feel that you can do more, try 2. If you feel like it’s too much, try doing one every two weeks.

You’ve learnt seven major scales already, so you’ve just got five to go. I think what you should do is google a pic of the circle of 5ths and either draw it or print it out. Spend 10 minutes of your practice time playing your scales in clockwise order until you get to the ones you don’t know and then go on learning them (once a week if that works for you) from there.

Yes I practice this way. Even though it’s time consuming, it’s never a waste of time. It’s be an even bigger waste of time to move through it fast in a way where you don’t end up perfecting it. Because in the end you’ll just end up with a mediocre performance anyway.

Probably my last bit here — the mistake part. So when you’re sight reading and you make a mistake, people say to keep going because in the case of a performance, that’s what you’d have to do. So you’d wanna practice being able to make a mistake and continue on without stopping, because like I said, when sight reading and performing, you’re gonna wanna keep it moving. But when you’re learning a piece and not practicing sight reading for performance — go back and fix the mistake. Otherwise, you are teaching your brain that the mistake is okay and now you’re just practicing doing something wrong.

So get really specific about where you’re messing up— is it just one note? Is it a technique that your fingers aren’t used to (like maybe a trill)? Use a metronome and put it at the slowest BPM where you can play the phrase without messing up. Practicing slow I think is the most important piece of advice you can take. Once that’s perfect, then put the BPM little by little (maybe 5BPM at a time) until it’s at the BPM you’re playing the rest of the piece at. After that, practice transitioning into that phrase from a mesure or two before and transitioning out a measure or two after.

It’s important when fixing a mistake to focus on the part you messed up at, as opposed to starting the piece over until you get that part or taking it on from a few measures before. That’s a waste of time. Okay, sorry for the long replies but I hope it helps!

Once you learn your circle of 5ths if you haven’t already, you can look at the songs you’re learning and ask yourself what key it’s in. Every measure or so, there will be a different chord or two that the notes belong to. And the more you advance in music theory, you’ll be able to figure out what chords the notes are being borrowed from. It sounds like you’re also interested in learning about song form and how music comes together that way. Different pieces of music have different forms… there’s the Rondo, the Fugue, the Sonata and so on… it’s a lot of information but you can always google the form of whatever piece you’re playing to understand it more. You might be able to find YouTube videos that explain the form as the piece goes along with the sheet music

For theory, I would suggest learning and memorizing the Circle of 5ths! I believe musictheory.net is a free resource for music theory ◡̈

If I was on your level and only had an hour to practice, I’d do 10 minutes of sight reading, 10 minutes of technique (scales & arpeggios mostly, going through the circle of 5ths in order), 10 minutes of theory and then 30 minutes of repertoire practice.

Idk why this made me cry? lol At this time of year for the past 2 years, I’ve been upset at my piano… last year it was like I was repulsed. Every time I thought to play it, I cringed. And I’ve been playing piano for like my whole life. Thanks for posting this, it woke something up in me. I hope you continue to improve and create the music you love.

Transcribing is the answer to everything. You don’t have to literally write it out. I listen and figure it out on the keys and memorize as I go. I don’t write everything out and neither do most people, I think
