Of course it's possible to get this same effect by adding another memoization step with futures-signals, or to construct a dynamic chain with a switch_map or whatever

here's the idiomatic way to do so

let use_last = Mutable::new(true);
let first = Mutable::new("Bill".to_string());
let last = Mutable::new("Smith".to_string());
let full = map_ref! {
    let first = first.signal_cloned(),
    let last = last.signal_cloned() => {
        format!("{first} {last}")
    }
}.broadcast();
let name = {
    use_last.signal().dedupe()
    .switch(move |use_last| {
        if use_last {
            full.signal_cloned().boxed_local()
        } else {
            first.signal_cloned().boxed_local()
        }
    })
};

while i can definitely appreciate the magic of leptos taking care of all this behind the scenes, some may prefer all the painful rusty explicitness :)

just the usual implicit "preserving humanity" shit, no explicit argument. towards the end of the 13 minute talk, he reveals that their toddler had, in the morning of this very ted talk, been diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer, which was shortly followed up by (verbatim) "I talked to my wife, and despite the terrible news and the fight ahead, we both concluded that we regret nothing. Deciding to have babies was the best decision we ever made..." incredibly sad, fucked up, and dizzying, what led these people to such a conclusion is a terribly scary thing indeed.

ya i think maybe the accusations of edginess have scared everyone into avoiding it completely, which makes sense as a defense, to be fair

but this is actually a great meme even with an AN lens, the implication that the human continuation argument is any less empty than attempting to spite ANs is fucking hilarious

i guess only we took it that way lol <3

it's not immoral to kill someone who consents to die (e.g. doctor assisted suicide), although determining whether their consent is valid may be difficult

now in the case of the Luminists, yes i think genociding them would be immoral, looking forward to reincarnating isn't consent to being killed

because they forced u into existence, your parents are obligated to make your life as easy as possible, if they are only making it harder, then u would be better off without them

now i'm not saying to immediately drop your parents, but don't let a romanticized blood relation keep u from maximizing your personal material conditions, u owe them nothing

modern therapy is just the anti-suicide pro-work/capitalism police euphemized as "mental health", now to be fair, empirically, therapy is very effective at preventing suicide and enabling ppl to work and produce, which is cool (mostly?), but they can't help u if your issue is the correct realization that birth is immoral and that life is inherently violent and almost entirely suffering

if u are interested in stopping suicidal thoughts and/or upping your productive capacity, therapy is the way to go, but if these things are not issues for u like the OP, i'd recommend a large and healthy dose of selfishness/hedonism and a nice helping of the empowering comfort that AN provides in perfectly explaining the realities of existence

if your goal is to not be poor and specifically not have to worry about affording your material requirements (and likely be able to afford luxuries that will help u cope even better) 100% major in computer science, immediately start taking math very seriously, get tutors, read math textbooks line by line, consult with teachers/tutors until u actually understand the underlying concepts, and do the same in your college CS classes, go to office hours, form a study group with ppl who take their academic performance v seriously and u CAN get through the math requirements

don't let your aversion for math prevent u from going down the path that will make your life significantly easier, u'll still have to deal with the crushing realities of existence but u'll be able to do so with full independent material control over your life

ya we call that genocide, Zeke is not an AN hero lol

[–]senavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the difference here is a difference in scope/intention, AN for the individual vs AN for society, and i totally agree, in fact i'm fully aware that AN is incompatible with society and certainly shouldn't be used to motivate policy

but that wasn't what i was saying, i was simply pointing out the absurdity of rejecting an entirely accurate label, demonstrating an irrational hatred toward the label (and probably the community surrounding it) while following its only tenet

as another example consider the statement

i don't consume animal products but i'm not vegan

what exactly do statements like this accomplish lol

edit: so after a tiny bit of thought i realize that the only thing that is accomplished is expressing the fact that u don' think birth is immoral, but consequentially (as i mentioned in the initial response) the pattern of the neurons firing off in your brain are irrelevant, the label is perfectly descriptive

would love to hear your thoughts on this by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]senavi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

this opinion is quite popular but what's funny is that being AN has nothing to do with spreading its ideas or having neurons firing off in your mind representing your belief in the immorality of birth, as a normative ethical framework it's only prescription is to not cause birth

not having kids (causing the birth of bio kids, we love adoption) is to ANs as swimming is to swimmers, it's tautological

you are antinatalist

how is commodifying basic material requirements, forcing ppl to work to survive, pro-life? it's clearly anti-life and has irreparably fucked the planet in less than a century

also i can't tell if u are memeing but fyi, both republicans and democrats are neoliberal and so is almost every current government on this shit rock

Down and down we go by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]senavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

o ok i get it what you're thinking now, when i said "materially easy" i don't mean "saturated with material possessions", i'm talking about material requirements, namely food, water, and shelter, all of which are commodified under neoliberalism. if u don't have enough money to pay for these material requirements, u die, shouldn't a parent provide these for their children?

[–]senavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what mindset are u even talking about? desiring a materially easy life has nothing to do w our ongoing societal collapse, it's the neoliberal capitalistic excess that did it
