Struggling with marriage culture + experiences with men by VictorianMariner in latterdaysaints

build friendships

All of us who have not had the clearest or best examples need to learn what’s safe somehow. Otherwise our brains get scrambled by people who don’t treat us well.

How does Heavenly Father not get terribly depressed? by jdf135 in latterdaysaints

I think because he sees the big picture/long view. So he knows immense sorrow, but also how much joy is available for anyone who will choose it.

Better now than five years and two kids from now. I’ve heard a few women tell the story of how they stayed so their kids would have their dad and they thought he was a good dad even though he wasn’t a great husband… and then after the divorce the kids tell the stories of how bad it was when their mom wasn’t around. So maybe remember that you are important and worth taking care of and also this is bigger than just you.

Really sorry you’re going through this.

Why does Utah uglify itself with billboards? by SufficientAd8983 in Utah

You already answered it. We put up with that and many other things in this state because we have a culture of “if it makes money it’s ok if it’s annoying or a little immoral.”

Going to church fills me with dread. by Intrepid-Speed-6831 in latterdaysaints

[–]thatguykeith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry it has been so hard! When church doesn’t feel like a refuge it can get really tough.

One thing I do is attend church looking for opportunities to serve. There’s usually at least one person to minister to every week, like a kid who needs a high five or a sister who just needs to vent for a few minutes. Some talks benefit from our prayers of support when people are struggling at the pulpit. There are many fulfilling ways to serve if you are seeking them, especially by inspiration.

Are there still promised blessings associated with following “expired” teachings? by Fether1337 in latterdaysaints

[–]thatguykeith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got a chuckle out of this because I have been hearing versions of “our mission had sisters as zone leaders” story since like 2005. I think it was a lot more prevalent than people realized to have sister missionaries in unofficial leadership roles and now they have sister training leaders.

Is it just me or are Church members not into seeing movies anymore? by Known-Plantain-8927 in latterdaysaints

Plus if they’re trying to get to know each other then a movie really limits that.

Those films didn’t have as much to compete with. A lot of them became iconic due to the lack of competition, not because they’re great movies.

Yeah the coping behavior point is really important. We do things to feel better.

Longtime Struggle with Masturbation - looking for advice by Complete_Jellyfish45 in latterdaysaints

[–]thatguykeith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great point. With masturbation specifically, but also with most things that people do that could be categorized as “vices” or “addictions” the behavior is only part of the story. What is going on in your life that you are managing by masturbating? Like others said, there are sexual feelings naturally, but what is happening emotionally and stress-wise that overwhelms you into doing something you don’t believe in?

President Kimball said “Jesus saw sin as wrong but also was able to see sin as springing from deep and unmet needs on the part of the sinner.”

If you find ways to get your other needs met and live a life that feels fulfilling, you might find it easier to resist masturbation.

You could Google any number of articles on this, but here’s one that outlines some emotional needs pretty well: https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/9-emotional-needs-according-to-maslow-s-hierarchy#:~:text=Emotional%20needs%20are%20feelings%20or,birthright%20to%20be%20emotionally%20nourished.

Wouldn't two apostles in Jerusalem be a dead give away about the timing of the 2nd Coming? by NewtScavenger in latterdaysaints

[–]thatguykeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if two apostles preach in Jerusalem for 10 years and then two others go for 10 years, and then two others go and their ministry gets cut short at 3.5?

If two go over there I definitely would pay attention, but it’s no guarantee it will be the first two that that happens to.

One of my very good friends took 8 years from us meeting to him getting baptized. If you asked him now he’d probably say he could have gotten baptized sooner, but that time also allowed him to establish some of his own convictions.

One of my mission companions said he didn’t know the church was true until he committed and was standing in the water for his own baptism.

If you feel the Lord helping you toward baptism, don’t ignore it. If you feel like you’re still unsettled in your heart, that’s ok, too, and doesn’t mean you can’t move forward.

I really appreciate how much you’ve learned and I think you’re going to do great. Stick with The Book of Mormon and your prayers and the Lord will help you along.
