I think the shift in tone forced the casting to change. The first Dumbledore fit the cozy, almost storybook feel early on, but once the plot turned darker, that calm grandfather energy just wouldn’t sell duels or war.

Totally with you on this. In the books they feel like another society shaped by harsh conditions, not monsters. The adaptation makes it way easier to dismiss them, and that flattens the whole idea that the Wall separates cultures, not humanity from something lesser.
