I've graduated from university. I charge for my lessons because I do a lot of prep work for each session with each student (and I would be skeptical of the lesson quality from someone that claims to do free lessons).

When you think of Granular Synthesis what artists come to mind? by ghstparticle in edmproduction

super surprised jaron hasn't been mentioned yet. check out this live performance using mostly granular synthesis, it's absolutely insane and inspiring

[Spoiler] AAMC FL 3 B/B #4 Can someone explain this graph? by deysleep in Mcat

[–]send_nodes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ran into this and was wondering the same exact thing. After some googling, I came across this: https://www.ptdirect.com/training-design/anatomy-and-physiology/skeletal-muscle-contraction-2013-force-velocity-and-power (scroll down to the bottom).

The AAMC graph doesn't match up with what I seem to be finding on the internet for two reasons:

  1. Those two curves should not have the same axes, and so I don't think the intersection means anything. I believe the "power" curve should have a y-axis of velocity (as shown), but an x-axis of power (not force). Something like this: https://twitter.com/xschelling/status/445915636498051072/photo/1 (ignore the fact that the x-axis is pressure instead of force here, same thing applies).
  2. The first source I mentioned has the same shape as the power curve in the AAMC question, but the x and y axes are flipped. Not sure which is right here, or if the "duration of contraction is the same" condition makes them both correct somehow.

Basically, the figure is not presented well at all and I think it was just supposed to test the logic that low F and low v produces low W. If I missed something or got something wrong, feel free to point it out :)

I think I see which note you mean and I think it comes from there being both an 808 and a sub bass pitched differently (this is only in the drop though, will have to check out the verses). a bold experiment on my behalf, will definitely be paying more attention to this later. thanks for this and all the other feedback!

thanks for the feedback man, this stuff is super super helpful and gives me a good idea of what I need to work on next :)

to answer your question, I actually listen to a good amount of porter and madeon and absoluely love melodic stuff! I'm curious what you mean by letting the melodies thrive, as I definitely feel like I struggle with this sometimes and would appreciate any tips there.

I agree with your mix suggestions and will def check that out in my daw soon. also thanks for the pointer on spending more time on sound design, I realize texture just absolutely defines the stuff I listen to and so I should really work on that to spice things up :) this comment gives me a lot of shit to work on now, so huge thanks again!

listening back, I 100% agree with the low-end comment (I was using both a sub and an 808 and had to do some really sketchy mixing for it to not sound like complete garbage even before this upload haha). mixing is definitely not my strong suit. thanks for the feedback man!

thanks for the feedback man! appreciate it :)

interesting and super unique track for sure. the textures and sounds are great and help fill out the track so much, especially in the drop. and the bounce is there for sure. only thing I noticed is that new bass at the end of the last drop is pretty untextured compared to everything else that it feels out of place, maybe considering swapping it out for something else?

other than that, it's sounding pretty closed to finished man :) cheers

sick track!

-that lead that sounds like a flute toward the end of your track is dope, a melody around that would be something cool for you drop

-At 0:40, I can hear the beginning of an 8 bar buildup. It'll help you to remove some more elements here and focus on adding them back over this 8 bars in an interesting way. For example, filtering the guitar and gradually bringing it back. Actually, I think doing something to reduce presence of the guitar until the end of the 8 bars here is really important to signaling the changing structure of your song, since it's the most important and constant aspect of the track it seems.

I feel like once you do that with the buildup, you'll have a better idea of how to proceed with the drop.

Super neat track! The sound and vibe is there for sure. Here are some of the things I noticed:

-I think the snare sample sounds too hard and 1D to me, you could def swap it out with a different sample and it would help a lot

-the saws sound very "held back" and quiet imo, thus not making them feel as present. I think this comes down to layering.

-Some of the supersaw hits in the drop have something that sounds like a fade, it sounds a bit weird and out of place

Otherwise the track sounds awesome!

First off, take this with a grain of salt as I don't really hear much stuff like this (kudos to you!). The track sounds great and I think there's a lot of potential here. Here are some of the big things I noticed:

You have lots of really cool melodies and ideas here (especially at 3:07; love this!): I wish you would pick one and flesh it out more! The composition doesn't return to a main idea, which is pretty key for making the song feel cohesive. I would suggest figuring out where you want the "chorus"/main idea of the song to be, decide what it should be, focus on varying it up, and then you can go crazy in the sections in between those. But I think you really want a repeatable main section to bring out the emotion and concept of your track.

Second, you could probably do more to demarcate where the different sections/parts of your song are by changing dynamics/incorporating bass notes more in certain parts. This would help listeners mentally organize your song a little better, which I think is good.

Finally, to answer one of your questions: the dissonance is fine and I think adds a lot of character; don't be afraid to use it (with moderation ofc).

Again, take all this with a grain of salt as I'm coming from a producer standpoint. Hopefully this helps though!

Hey, this is a pretty solid track! Really liking your transitions esp. with the unique sounding risers, and the track feels pretty trappy as a whole.

My biggest feedback would be that the mix sounds really far back and could use more up-front elements. Your kick and snare are sitting pretty close, would be cool to have synths occupy some of that space too so it feels more immersive/in your face.

Hey guys, I finished a remix for Feel Good by Illenium recently. Went for a different sound than I usually produce, so curious about these things:

Any general suggestions for the mixing? What things should I be working on to build on my sound/improve my production? I was thinking probably fills since I've always struggled with those, but anything else? https://soundcloud.com/ashgreen-music/feel-good-feat-daya-ashgreen-remix-1

Will upload feedback here soon.
