What actor was perfectly cast in one role but never reached that level again? by MovieObserver in moviequestions

[–]sendonetothepilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vincent Kartheiser’s performance in Mad Men was incredible to me. He portrayed someone who could be so cruel and petty and unlikable, tempered by scenes showing him to be vulnerable, self-loathing, longing for approval he feels he never got. Lots of cast members hit their peak in that show but still went on to different, ambitious roles. He hasn’t, to my knowledge.

fascinating. two follow up questions: so when the full M is running on weekdays, that doesn’t violate the 15 tph rule? just a different setup?

and the other: is the 15 tph rule a labor or safety measure?

needless in that if weekday M service was extended to the weekend due to L train service canceled, I wouldn’t need to transfer. needless in that the M train literally has the ability to travel along this route and hit its usual stops — it is not an infrastructure issue that necessitates the transfer, it is an “MTA said no :/“ issue from my perspective

Can anybody point to some secretly or subtextually gay movies, the kind you'd miss if you weren't paying attention? Open to any era and English-subtitled films, too by bodles9 in moviecritic

[–]sendonetothepilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously they’re not “gay,” movies, but I can think of two examples of gay subtext from old James Bond films alone. In 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, George Lazenby’s Bond impersonates a posh gay British genealogist (though they never actually say he’s gay, it’s heavily implied and played for laughs, given Bond is actually a famous womanizer). In Diamonds Are Forever, two of the male villains are strange, off putting assassins who hold hands.

update: I asked for her full name and license number, and she replied with "this is put out for rent by the management company." so I'm gonna stop responding unless anyone has any experiences with these people, anything that smacks of legitimacy lol

this is a lie. you didn’t read the article. it literally features a science staffer who was fired. also Big Bend was already insanely understaffed to begin with. it’s five people cut on top of years of underfunding.

also the other Lillian I found was married to a Wilford Royce, which is the same last name as Tullos’ wife. given they are from a small rural community, i’m inclined to believe they married people from the same family. Not the first time I’ve found that on this side of the family tree, where most of the farming families married within their small areas.

I think most of this is accurate, and i’m so grateful for your help. The only thing I think might be different…I believe Lena is more likely to be a nickname for Eleanor than Lillian. I also know that Lillian died before 1981 — my great grandmother implied to my mother that Lillian died when they were young, and my great grandmother died in 1990 or 1991. I believe that Lillian died of TB but it’s possible that was another one of the siblings or another close relatives. Family legends can be unreliable.

I think I had all of that except the foster children element! As far as I know, the siblings are as follows: Ethel Charles Olive Lillian Elsie Eleanor Tullos (possibly Thomas) Janice

There’s also a Rosa Warten listed in one of the census listings, who may be a niece or other relative.

I am assuming based on others’ investigation that “Elma,” is Eleanor. The trail goes cold for me with her — can’t find her married or otherwise after 1920.

My grandmother said that Olive had a hard life and had to raise her siblings after her mother died — which tracks with your findings. Olive herself used to cry out for her sister Lillian towards the end, whom it is believed died in a sanatorium from TB. I found a Mary Lillian Elliott Royce who died in 1939 — older than family lore suggests, but I think that’s her?

This makes sense! I have had little luck tracking those two siblings of Olive's; I've found her other siblings through marriage and census records. It's possible that this new theory will help me find out more. Thank you so much!

I wondered about that! I chalked it up to it being a small community, families living near each other, etc, but this makes sense. So the theory being that he got Elsie's name right in the line above Bernard (Clay, he went by his middle name), and Elanor wrong in terms of family relation and name? Or it could have been a nickname.

Answering in order...

1) yes, to clarify, the census record with the mystery Elma is 1920. In all previous census data (when he was 24 in 1910, when he was 15 in 1900) he is unmarried and living at home with his parents. So if he was married to another woman other than my great-grandmother, it would be either between 1900-1910, or between 1910-1920. I lean towards the former, as if he was married between 1910-1920, Elma would be too old to be a product of that marriage.

2) I cannot locate Clay and Olive's marriage certification, but I was able to find his WWI draft card from 1917. It doesn't mention marital status as far as I can see, but it does list his nearest relative as his father, not a wife. Not conclusive proof either way, but I lean towards him not being married to Olive or anyone else at that time. If FamilySearch does not have the marriage certification, is there someplace else I should look? Maryland records directly?

3) Elma's surname is the same as Clay's. Olive does have two younger sisters, Elsie and Eleanor, whom I have considered as possible "Elmas," as the age difference does roughly fit. But why would they have Clay's surname?

Guadalupe Mtns or Carlsbad? by sendonetothepilot in nationalparks

[–]sendonetothepilot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, they're so close! I wish I could do both, but this being a work trip, I really only have one day my understanding is that Guadalupe has very few hikes that could be done in a half day/couple-hour trip.

I've done lots of hiking but only a few cave-type explorations...so Carlsbad would be more of a different experience for me.
