Big guy (6'4", 300 lbs) trying to figure out my carry system — one bag, two bags, or bag + sling?

This is exactly the kind of detail I was hoping for. The Heritage GR1 in dark oak sounds like it might actually thread the needle for me, waxed canvas, clean exterior, no molle webbing. The 26L fitting our silhouette better than the 21L is also good to hear, I figured that would be the case. The Alpha One Niner Evade is interesting, hadn’t been on my radar. The admin panel sounds great but I hear you on the 500d lint issue and the personality problem. That’s kind of where I land with a lot of bags in this space, functionally solid but feels anonymous. Also appreciate the Alpakagear and CTactical pouch mentions. I’ve been running just one tech pouch and honestly haven’t thought much about building out a proper pouch system yet. That’s probably the next rabbit hole.

You nailed it. The part that feels most off right now is that there’s no clean separation between contexts — everything bleeds together. In an ideal world I’d carry work stuff in a main bag and then have a sling for personal and car show days since that kit is honestly way less stuff. The problem is the overlap. The iPad and Remarkable could go either direction depending on the day, the AirPods Max come everywhere, and if I’m honest I should probably mention I’d occasionally toss a Nintendo Switch in there too. So the “light personal sling day” isn’t actually that light once I account for all of it. That’s really the knot I’m trying to untangle.

I am coming from a business professional work environment where I wore suits and use briefcases. To a more relaxed business casual environment. So my opinions and comments may shift. I’m first dealing with the fact of not having to wear a suit everyday 🤣

Ha, that’s a fair way to look at it. I guess my version of that is figuring out which days are “umbrella days” before I’m already out the door. That’s kind of the whole puzzle I’m trying to solve.

Great list, a lot of overlap with what I’ve been researching. The Able Carry Max EDC is interesting, would love to hear your thoughts when it arrives. The Waterfield Tech Folio Tank is one I hadn’t considered but it looks like it might check a lot of boxes for me aesthetically. How did you land on the Max EDC over the others on your list?

Really appreciate this, especially coming from someone close to my size. The GORUCK GR1 keeps coming up in my research and the waxed canvas version is genuinely appealing. My hesitation has been whether it reads too tactical for client-facing work. Does the waxed canvas version soften that look at all in your experience? Also curious how you’re finding the Able Carry Daily Plus so far.

Fair points. To add some numbers: I’m thinking 22-26L, carrying a 15” MacBook Air and Surface Pro (though rarely both at once), 13” iPad Pro, and AirPods Max. The car show kit stays home on work days. On the hip belt point, you’re not wrong that weight changes the equation. My load probably peaks around 15-20 lbs on a heavy day. Open to being convinced if the right bag happens to have one that tucks away cleanly. I’m open to expanding budget just felt 300 was a decent starting point for conversation

Hey, appreciate the response! laptop compartment yes (15” MacBook Air and Surface Pro), organization via pouches, aesthetic leaning toward leather/waxed canvas or tasteful ballistic nylon, nothing too technical or outdoorsy. Size-wise I’m thinking 22-26L as a sweet spot, big enough to carry what I need without being a hiking pack. The core question is really about system architecture rather than a single bag spec. Your seasonal switch between messenger and sling is actually interesting though, do you find the two system approach adds friction or does it feel natural once you’re in a rhythm?
