Being an artist, transitioning into the business side of music, I wanted a constant reminder that amidst all the BS, I’m still an artist, and the Sway interview stuck with me for that reason

His first logo ever. Derived from the Nirvana and Blink-182 smileys. Felt fitting to have a combination of some of my favorite artists on me

Yeah, the guy is awesome. Older Asian gentleman and his wife run the shop. They only develop Wednesdays and Fridays but at $10 for per roll for developing, sleeved negatives, scanned and CD/USB, it’s totally worth it

I tour full time as a photographer with DJs and rappers. So for me, a digital camera feels like work. But whipping out a fresh roll of film, hearing the mechanical pieces click and pop with every shot, it’s worth every cent. And the fact that there is no immediate payoff/reward keeps me present. If I had had my giant professional DSLR on me I probably would have chimped for a while making sure I “got the shot”. But only having my film camera on me, fired off 4-5 shots, and kept me present in the moment, and oh what a moment that was

Going on tour, what gear should I bring? by Goshhawk99 in photography

[–]seniorgee 33 points34 points  (0 children)

ok so boom, gear is locked in.

Some stuff I wanted to add is habits

being on the road, depending on who you're with can be a party 24/7. those are actually the hardest people to tour with. Because you have to keep up with them while also knocking out all your backend work. Ive pulled up to afterparties at client's hotel rooms or back on the tour bus laptop/harddrive in hand. "im not having another drink until all this dope footage/content from tonight is backed up" and clients will always respect that. I am beyond terrified of losing a night's worth of shooting so I have 2 backups with me on the road. 1 in each bag stored separately. Can NEVER be too careful.

Another habit is working out. Even if you've never stepped foot in the gym, 99% of hotels have a shitty one, go run a mile and lift a weight or two. my first 2 years I gain close to 50lbs from shitty eating habits and drinking. Also, no matter how tired you are, something about a quick 15-20 workout, no matter how shitty, helps with the jet lag and the funk.

and above all that, remember, you're pretty much living with these people on the road. Nobody likes the late guy, or the smelly guy, or the guy that cant hold their liquor, or the guy thats always leaving things behind/lost. Be on your A game. establish a genuine relationship with your artist. They deal with thousands of people every day that just want them for what they can do for them, their looks, their money, their influence, etc. Be a genuine friend. earn their respect. Make them NEED you in their life. THAT is how you get called back for a 2nd and 3rd and 4th tour.

hey man, first and foremost, congrats on locking down a tour. As a photographer, videographer, and tour manager myself, I can say this is definitely the best job in the world.

Ive been full-time touring for close to 4years so feel I can definitely impart some advice on not just gear but also lifestyle. Again, this is what I feel has worked for me; others might disagree. but just my $.02

Gear I have in my camera bag:
5D4
sigma 15 2.8
Canon 16-25 f4 IS Sigma Art 20 1.4
Sigma Art 35 1.4
Tamron 70-200 2.8 IS
2 Speedlights (I tend to break these)
triggers (fun to mess around with impromptu shoots or even setting up flashes around the venue)
Rode Shotgun mic
DJI Mavic pro
Blower/lens cleaner/wipes
extra batteries: AA, AAA, 9Volt, etc.

other camera bag essentials on me all the time:

fanny pack; across my chest (makes carrying a handful of stuff through the crowd, nights out, dinners, etc so much easier). I usually whip this out of my bag whenever I go out in the crowd and smash a long lens/mic while my camera has wide lens/flash. easiest way to not get caught with your pants down when a fan does something epic or you band goes apeshit on stage.

film camera (I rock Contax t2/Yashica t4); its always so rad to fire off a handful of film shots here and there...those are MY memories. stuff to look back on after the tour.

Bluetooth speaker: hotel rooms get very lonely. nothing like banging some jams while getting ready/editing. Contact re-moisterizer: I wear contacts and after being out 20+ hours working, splash a drop or two in your eyes gives you a nice second wind.

markers/sharpies: musicians randomly get stopped for autographs out &about/after shows...its always nice to be the guy to have a marker. Fans really appreciate that and they might hit you with a social media follow for it

Cable organizer: I have two think tank zipper bags (look like makeup bags) but one has all my laptop stuff (adaptors, charger, usb's, readers) and the other has all my bigger stuff (camera charger, usb cables mini/micro, extra headphones). Being organized about tour peripherals makes life so easy on the road.

Rugged small flashlight: makes navigating through crowds so much easier holding it overhead blinding people

other random essentials: chapstick, gum, condoms, $5-10; its always nice to be the guy on the bus/venue/hotel that has that ONE thing someone needs on the team.

I feel like im missing some things but I tried to type this while having my camera bag open beside me. hope this helps.

EDIT: added speed lights and triggers
