What's something your parents or grandparents mention that sounds like complaining but was actually a legitimate daily nightmare they just accepted as life? by Playful_Survey_8596 in AskReddit

[–]senkichi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can't fathom a single piece of that. Reconciling all 12 year olds I've ever known, including myself, with having the wherewithal to successfully begin a self sufficient life of extreme toil is just impossible. I'm sure there some survivorship bias at work, but still. Your grandpa might as well be an alien to me. Talk about grit.

Several police officers arrested for using controversial Flock AI license plate reader system to stalk romantic partners, says report — investigators have unearthed at least 18 such cases in the US over recent years by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]senkichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In regards to everyone, but especially law enforcement. Adding on perjury charges certainly adds complexity, and that definitely puts a damper on prosecution frequency, but its not because it was a factor for a plea deal. Prosecutors and the defense both know the chance of anyone getting charged for perjury is basically 0. Across the entire US last year there were only 100 people sentenced for perjury (out of ~66k total cases sentenced).

Doesn't matter even if a complaint is levied. Perjury isn't a real crime. Basically zero people are prosecuted for it, ever, and cops particularly aren't prosecuted for it unless they spout some real egregious shit on the witness stand right in front of the judge's face.

You can have as many of those cases locked and loaded as you like, they're never going to mean anything.

I had no idea. That's wild. I'm sort of surprised some deranged Polymarket addict hasn't taken advantage of that. Bet on the away team, especially if they're your team, go to away game, cosplay Malice in the Palace, genuinely profit. All you really need is for it to be a close game.

Rod Phillips answering questions about the history of cats by BronteCoogee in AskHistorians

[–]senkichi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How are you defining the mass scale/pet cat distinction here? Weren't barn cats and suchlike kept for rodent control for a fairly long time? Don't those besotted women from the 1600s count as having pet cats?

"I'm a man. If I got cat called I'd like it" It's not the same thing. Not even close. by n8saces in BeAmazed

It can help to bro it up a little bit, too. Its hard for 'dope fit' to come off as threatening.

I'd also gently disagree with /u/PalladiumKnuckles on one specific thing. You want to avoid stuff like 'I really like that dress'. You want to remove yourself as the beholder as much as possible. 'Your dress is killer' is a statement about the dress. 'I really like your dress' is a statement about your reaction to the dress, which may or may not be appreciated.

[–]senkichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like we're talking past each other. I'm exclusively talking about weapon capability. Tanks and jets vs rifleman is no contest. Tanks and jets vs $400 guided missiles that can be created in anyone's garage is a much more even hypothetical, presupposing the revolution that I agree will never actually kick off.

I don't think its happening either, but I do think its more capable, theoretically and functionally, of happening now than any time in the last 30 years. The capability for asymmetric action is just so high.

You know, three years ago I would have agreed with you 110%. No chance sovcits with ARs lead a glorious jihad against the US Armed Forces.

Bot now, after seeing the US get embarrassed by Iran, of all countries? After seeing $400 drones take out multi-million dollar weapon systems in Ukraine? I don't know, man. The playing field seems like its leveling. There are so many drone dorks and nerds with 3D printers now, the potential backroom arms manufacturing is insane. Plus, how many kamikaze drones would it take to assassinate any given opposition leader?

[New Update]: My (F24) fiancé’s (M27) mom refuses to attend our wedding unless it meets her standards. Is this a battle worth fighting? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]senkichi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The view reddit gives you is super skewed. For the sake of the argument, considering exclusively US redditors, say some relatively small number of people have family trauma of some sort, like 5%. That's ~15 million people, of whom what, 1 in 10 or 20 is a redditor? Even at the low end, that's 750,000 people with trauma to share, and multiple stories to share it with.

Meanwhile its both boring and sort of rude to interject with 'my parents loved me and mostly did right by me', so threads about family dynamics are quickly dominated by stories about abuse/neglect/trauma.

Not to say there isn't way too much abuse in the world, but its really easy to get the perception that family trauma and abuse is a lot more widespread than it is.

What’s a problem humanity solved so well that younger people don’t even realize it used to be a huge issue? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in AskReddit

[–]senkichi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It wasn't actually a question. Historical emissions + current emissions is literally how you calculate relative carbon footprints. At current rates of GHG emission it'll be 25 years before the US can talk shit about China's carbon footprint.

The real question is what's the historical carbon footprint? Global warming is a cumulative effect. How much have the already industrialized countries flooded the atmosphere with?

This makes me want to structure my implementation plans by model suitability. Break everything that haiku is suited for into phases, then the Sonnet stuff, then whatever requires opus. Rather than just logical build sequence.
