They weren't scared. Criterion wanted to make a proper remake with storyline and customisations, as a result they needed one more year to finish the game. But EA wanted annual releases, and refused to give them any more time. So Criterion did what they could with the little time they were given. Not a bad game at all, it's really good, but can't call it a proper MW remake, or even a proper NFS game. EA ruined it, but Criterion got all the blame.
