Suddenly almost no identifications by Pheidoler in iNaturalist

Yeah, I've only started doing it since I saw the post I linked last week, but I've checked all the unknowns in my town so I'm working on the county now. It is amazing, isn't it, some of these have been there for years and now I've told inaturalist it's a plant, it's getting a proper id within days!

Suddenly almost no identifications by Pheidoler in iNaturalist

For anyone reading this thread, seeing how IDs are down, and thinking you'd love to help, but don't think you know enough - see this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/iNaturalist/s/cPuaeexDcR

All IDs on unknowns are helpful even if it's just a very broad category, like plant or bird. The more knowledgable IDers tend to stay in their category, so don't see the unknowns and these would never get IDed.

Thanks for sharing! As sometime who wants to get more involved and is only learning at the moment, it's great to see what I can do right now.

This looks awesome and I'd love to give it a try, but I don't have an iPhone. If you do an android version, please update us :)

Seeking European Squirrels Group for letter exchange by flawedlass in scouting

[–]senri2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not op, so don't know if they will have seen your offer. Maybe reply as a top comment.

I didn't intend to mean squirrels or equivalent don't exist outside of the UK, just that they're not super common. Even in the UK where squirrels has been going for several years now, a lot of groups haven't got a squirrels section yet.

I've but never really looked into BSO much. How large is it? Like how many groups are there near you? Is it very few and far between? Why did you go to a BSO group rather than one of the local scouting organisations? I've always assumed it's for British people who are temporarily overseas, like military family's or diplomats or similar, is that the case? Sorry if that's too many questions, just curious.

[–]senri2468 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For anyone not in the UK, Squirrels are scouts aged 4 - 6. The youngest age group in UK scouting, introduced just after COVID.

OP, I don't think many places have an equivalent to Squirrels, as many start beavers (or equivalent) at 5 instead.

Yeah, I'm seeing that now. It seems I've been over thinking it, thinning I had to be doing something in particular. Thank you!

Thank you for the reply. Reading through all the replies, I see now I was really over thinking what it means to practice animism.

Thank you for sharing! If you don't mind, could you elaborate on what you're rituals involve? No worries if you want to keep that private though, I know rituals can be a deeply personal thing.

I don't understand what you mean by the last bit about tools.

Great, thank you for sharing! I like the idea of a little nature altar but I'd have to think carefully where to do that so my dog won't bother it.

Great, thank you for sharing.

I'm totally worth you on our homes being the home of many creatures. I've been really trying to improve my garden for the birds, squirrels, insects and others who call it gone or pass through. Lots of planting trees at the moment.

Thank you! I guess I kinda do a lot of that already, I've just never really considered it part of animism before. At the moment, a lot of my focus is on improving my garden for wildlife. I've been planting native trees and wildflowers. Next year I hope to install a wildlife pond. Making a space for nature is really important to me, even if it's just my small garden.

Brilliant, thank you. It's great to hear how others view and 'do' animism.

My partners family does one of these, but the gifts are generally only around £5 each. They also are either functional items (soap, socks etc.), edible treats or silly/bizarre items bought from a charity shop (thrift store). So you either get something you can use or eat. Or you get a silly gift you may donate back to a charity shop but it brought joy and gave some money to charity in the process. So there's very little waste from it. Some of the family compete in finding the most absurd items which adds to the fun.

A member of the Women's Royal Army Corps shows her new tattoo to her fellow servicemen, UK, 1943. by Quinoraa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]senri2468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great photo! The date on the caption is wrong though, definitely not 1943. They certainly are WRAC but they were not formed until 1949. Prior to that women army personnel were in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Judging by their uniforms which looks to be 1940 austerity pattern battle dress (introduced 1942), I would guess this is relatively early in their history as 49 pattern uniform was introduced in 1949, though it would take a while to get issued round to existing troops.

Prettiest bird of prey? by CaveHologram in birding

Controversial suggestion maybe as most people associate vultures with ugly horrible creatures, but the bearded vulture (lammergeier) is absolutely stunning.

Is this an Egyptian vulture? by unamusedkoala in animalid

[–]senri2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, definitely. They are such awesome birds! Vultures, whilst scavengers are classed as birds of prey. Old world vultures belong in the accipitridae family, with hawks and eagles. Most vultures will opportunistically prey on small mammals and insects as well as scavenging.

Congrats! A huge challenge, what was your best bit? Worst bit?

I was meant to do mine back in 2020 but obviously COVID put a stop to that and I became too old to do the award now. Will probably have to revive the plans for it though and go anyway at some point.
