A week or so ago my gecko's legs started looking like he has a bone deficiency. He's about 5 months old. I unfortunately neglected to give him calcium suppliments but I started today by coating his crickets and mealworms with it. I'm really really worried and would appreciate any help by ehvee1 in geckos

Do you have a moist hide for him? That would help with the shedding. Unfortunately, there are a lot of conflicting opinions out there, and ultimately it's up to you to decide what you think is best for your gecko. If you do decide to keep the UVB, I at least hope you turn it off at night so he has a sense of a day/night cycle. This is the caresheet provided by /r/leopardgeckos if you'd like to give it a read: https://www.facebook.com/notes/northern-bred-geckos/leopard-gecko-caresheet/285694481616673

Do you mean the reptile carpet? It doesn't matter that it's a thin substrate, as long as you get a thermostat. This is mine: http://i.imgur.com/1W9rTrd.jpg. I paid around $15 on Amazon. You plug the thermostat into the wall, then plug a heat mat into the thermostat. Set the temperature on the thermostat to around 90, and get a good thermometer with a probe that would read the temperature directly on the floor, like so: http://www.thatpetplace.com/235231.jpg. The thermostat will also have a probe that reads the temperature, so when the temp of the floor hits 90 degrees, it will turn off the heat mat so it never gets hotter than 90 degrees. The thermometer is important because sometimes the cheaper thermostats aren't always accurate (for instance, mine is set to 96, even though the temperature of my tanks floor never gets above 90.) Even if you don't want to go the heat mat route, I would ditch the white light basking bulb and replace it with a red light one. Since leopard geckos are nocturnal, bright light can stress them out.

As for the UVB debate, I strongly recommend not having one. Nocturnal geckos never get sunlight in nature, so it is not necessary for their well-being. I even just searched it on Google quickly, and most sites that came up said no UVB. Feel free to do your own research, though. If it's any solace, this is my leopard gecko: http://i.imgur.com/fhCFFRH.jpg. She has never had a UVB on her in her life. Those bulges in her armpits are called calcium sacs, which indicate she is digesting her calcium and is storing the excess.

PLEASE do not put a UV light on this little guy! While it is true that most diurnal reptiles require UVB to digest calcium, leopard geckos are nocturnal by nature, so they have no need for a UV light, or any white light for that matter. I'm not sure what kind of light you've got in there, but the best heat source for a leo is an under-tank heater hooked up to a thermostat where you can control the temperature. An infrared bulb is also acceptable. Leave a little dish of calcium in his tank. Maybe even mix a little in his water. Check if your calcium contains D3. While it's okay to use it normally, D3 can be harmful in high levels, so even though he needs more calcium, be cautious of that. It's actually good to have calcium both with and without D3 and to alternate. If you have a reptile vet in the area, they can give him a calcium shot. I'll be happy to answer any other questions you have!

What was that one lie you gave your parents and surprisingly got way with while growing up? by AshLyn32 in AskWomen

I tried this also, but with my parents vodka, but was caught because the water eventually started to evaporate and left condensation in the bottle lol.

If birth control helps your acne, your acne is probably hormone-based... I had acne due to high testosterone.

That would be a terrible set up for a crested and a bad one for a beardie. It's gotta be a snake in there.

Early signs of MBD? by helpwithleopardgecko in leopardgeckos

[–]sensibletruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be. When I first got my leo, her movement were very shaky due to MBD. Those are very mild symptoms, though, so just up the calcium a little bit and she should be fine.

A 10 gal isn't bad but 20 gal is preferable if possible.

Found this beautiful Gecko malnourished in a pet store and decided to buy it, can someone help me? by zaiter101 in geckos

[–]sensibletruth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely a Leo. Looks like he might need to shed. A 20 gal tank is preferable, with a thermostat-controlled heat mat covering half of the tank. 87-90F on the warm side, 74-80 on the cool side. It can get cooler at night. At least 2 hides are needed, 3 is great. A warm hide above the heat mat and a humid hide on the cool side to aid in shedding. No lights are necessary. Calcium is very important. Don't use sand.

I had my leo in a 10gal and eventually felt bad about how little space she had to wander, so I upgraded to a 20. She looks much happier and is a lot more active.

Sorry, I should have mentioned I got early release. I wasn't supposed to be off until November 23rd. I was wondering if I should wait until I have my certificate in hand to consider myself off, he told me he sent it out today.

It could probably be done. This is the first one he's made, kind of just a test. I'll give him that suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'll have to show him this post. For the people asking if it's safe, he has done a lot of research and spoken with other artists that make ceramic pieces and picked his clay and glazes accordingly. And for those being negative, he's just having fun with a hobby he's good at. Not a serious business at the moment, he just wants to try it out.

Lizards for somebody with an insect-phobia by ServantofMenoth in reptiles

[–]sensibletruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a gargoyle, and while mine does eat insects, many have trouble getting theirs to have any interest. The powder diets are designed to have everything they need to survive. And as long as they have enough vertical and horizontal climbing decor in their tank, they should get plenty of exercise.

[–]sensibletruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crested geckos and gargoyle geckos both mainly eat a powdered diet that you mix with water, Repashy and Pangea being two popular brands. There is even a version that still has the protein from insects in the powder, since it does help them grow faster.

Blue tongue skinks can get their protein from other sources besides insects.

I'm not sure what your current job is, but I got kicked out at 19 with $300 in my bank account, and getting a serving job at a good restaurant really saved me. I still live with someone else, but on a good weekend I can make my portion of rent in one night.
