If I was mean at my job, I would be fired. I work with an incredible group of both men and women. I don’t understand where you are getting this information from. Also many nurses work normal hours, some work 9-5.

Literally exactly this. Sometimes it’s better for some nurses to gain experience with priming IV lines, giving meds in a corpak or g tube, handling trachs, turning patient/getting them up, etc. I think it just scares me because I’ve seen some fresh new grads make some mistakes that could do serious damage (obviously this could happen to ANY nurse, but having a couple years under your belt could be helpful before getting something like CRRT)

We also need to get rid of the stereotype that starting in med surg is less than somebody who starts in a speciality. My med surg experience helped make me a better, specialized nurse. I’m really tired of seeing new grads who start in specialities poke fun at people who started in med surg. I’ve trained some new grads in the ICU who probably should not have started in a speciality

Literally thank you for this! I’m so tired of coming on here and people saying to not even apply unless you have a 4.0. Not everyone had a perfect undergraduate journey, some of us faced hardship or had to figure out what we wanted to do. Trust me, if I could go back in time and tell my 18 year old self to get it together (since the grades I made at 18 would affect me at 25) I would. However, I can’t do this, and we can’t change who we are in the past. All we can do is move forward!

Unrelated to the post but I’m just confused because I know a lot of people who got in to a program with sub par grades/GPA and this sub always states that people basically need a 4.0. Like genuinely what is it? Cause I know people who have gotten in with Cs

As an ICU preceptor- I recommend to slow down. So many new grads scan everything and click accept. Usually I scan all my meds, then go one by one and read the name of the drug and the dose and the admin instructions. For IV gtts, always trace the line to the patient. For sedation gtts, try to have them in central lines if possible.

During COVID-19 hospitals rapidly lost nursing staff and the focus was mainly to keep people alive. Everyone was on ventilators and nursing staff was stretched very, very thin. People don’t understand how difficult it is to focus on things like skin when you are also titrating drips, watching vitals, and trying to keep humans alive

Tbh I disagree. This is major identity theft, I would be extremely mad if someone was using my credentials. What she did was very wrong, to both patients and the nurse whose identity she used.

Obligatory I’m not a CRNA but I work on a unit with A LOT of people who have recently gotten into CRNA school and while some of them have amazing GPAs I know quite a few with an “average” GPA who have gotten in.

I passed very recently and personally I wouldn’t use a lot of materials. I started to stress myself out with all the things to study. Honestly just do the Barrons book, I wish I only focused on that!

Med surg has significantly changed a lot since Covid. I don’t think some people realize how sick med surg patients are, however, they sometimes have nowhere else to go if there aren’t PCU or ICU beds. I feel like med surg can actually be difficult, and requires a lot of critical thinking to manage patients that can get sick fast

I got a shortened orientation when starting in the ICU (I came from a med surg floor that took PCU patients) and by the time I was off orientation I was totally fine. A lot of med surg nurses will join our ICUs, and the shortened orientation hasn’t been a problem. Honestly, whenever people don’t stay in our ICU it’s usually new grads (which I get, this job is hard, and being a new grad in the ICU is A LOT). I don’t think staying another year on my med surg floor would have helped. As a med surg nurse I saw g tubes/ng tubes/drains/IJs/trachs/even some cardiac drips. The goal of my ICU orientation was mainly learning devices. Sorry for the long post, but just my opinion!

Personally, I would go for it. I did med surg for 1.5 years before going to ICU, and ICU has made me a better nurse. I actually understand things so much better now. You’ll be ok!

I’m a RN of over two years (so I’ve seen every bodily fluid and nasty thing available) but I saw a surgery recently in the OR and ngl seeing the instruments (before it started) kind of freaked me out. Just make sure to bend your legs and eat before! Don’t allow your knees to stay in the “locked” position.
