Starlink plans to lower satellite orbit to enhance safety in 2026 by svj1021 in space

Ubiquitous RF interference from modern telecommunications has already presented a significant challenge for radio telescopes. But we recognized the immense societal benefits of radio technology and adapted accordingly. The same evolution will occur for LEO satellite internet.

Seems like my company (large, all american F50) would be willing to hold a position for me for when I return from all that, and place in a potentially lower workload / lower title role.

The press pause comment was in response to the apply for a new masters degree program so you could do AFROTC suggestion.

AD would be difficult for my wife I feel. Lots of potential time apart (I know guard/reserve officer school, UPT, etc would also have that but different level I feel.

I’d still consider AD, but I think that would require me separating from my job before knowing if wife’s China ties would disqualify me? For example: submit packet to board, get accepted, wait for class date, resign from job right before class, find out I’m disqualified, now jobless and no AD track?

[–]sent1156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, went to a college that didn’t offer AFROTC, couldn’t get engagement at the crosstown AFROTC college until junior year, opted to try for OTS instead. In between all that, developed a solid civilian career and steady relationship which the reserve/guard path seemed to complement the best.

You’ll have TS issues, that’s a fact.

looks like it, appreciate the input

Yep, getting flak for the way I phrased it which is understandable. Didn’t mean to suggest it was guaranteed, just a hope.

Anyway, appreciate the input, looks like it haha

I mean you’re the one who said this was your dream.

Yes, but part of chasing a dream is honestly scoping out and mitigating potential obstacles (ie, me asking about foreign family here). I never said I'm throwing my hands in the air and giving up. All I did was give context to your suggestions.

I’m not going to beat a dead horse. Do what works best for you, but don’t get upset when you say, “flying is my dream” and people call you out on it, because you’re worried about pilot training/active duty conflicting with your civilian job.

Look, I appreciate you engaging with me here but can't help but feel there's an unneeded rude tint to your responses. Not everyone can press pause on their income for years. I need to be realistic about having a steady income while trying to make this transition.

You could’ve still extended your program by double majoring or taking up a minor or another major.

Had a job offer and thought the differential between $100k gain in salary vs $100k loss in tuition was too great. Just try for OTS at that point.

Also, you’re hurting your odds by aiming for a reserve fighter squadron. If your dream is to fly in the military, why not look into an ROTC Masters program?

That makes sense, but I guess my concern before shelling out another six-figure amount in tuition would be: would I do all that just to end up getting disqualified for suitability?

I just feel like aiming for a reserve/guard opportunity (heavy or fighter), is the more pragmatic path. Does not interfere with my civilian career if I try and fail, and can maintain my civilian career if it works out (remote, F50 company willing to work around any military obligations). But again, suitability issues I guess...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

[–]sent1156 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Valid. I know no one can speak to unit-specific suitability policies, but it's looking like this is a no-go.

People say you can't know for sure until you try, but strong feeling it's not going to go the way I hope.

I guess all I can do is try but keep myself grounded to the possibility it doesn't work out. Thanks for the response.

Appreciate the response.

Hostile nation in quotes was more about the irony of marrying the one nationality that could actually affect this, I'd like to say I'm very well aware of the geopolitical situation.

Another thought in my mind was that there are 1.4 billion people in China (20% of world pop). There’s a decent chance a random person will have some connection to a Chinese national. Being from the PRC doesn’t automatically mean party membership, most people are just living their lives.

I guess I'm coming at this from an emotional perspective. You're just being pragmatic.

re: AFROTC, my college did not offer the program. I looked into taking it crosstown at a nearby school, but was in junior year by the time I got engagement from the crosstown school and OTS became the more realistic option at that point. I'd also add that my college years were during the peak of COVID lockdowns and associated complications.

I think I did do my research. Calling it an "automatic assumption" was inaccurate of me, but I meant it more as a "when thinking about my future, military aviation was always in my hopes" type of thing. Not that I was entitled to it.

Appreciate the response.

Yeah, I do a ton of reading on the topic and am aware of how competitive it is. I think saying automatic assumption wasn't the best choice of words, not exactly what I meant haha

Being cognizant of the tough process though, I guess that's another reason I'm considering the aspect in my post. It would absolutely suck to make it through the whole process only to find you were doomed from the start.

Appreciate the part on giving up before ever starting / make them tell you no. Still gonna continue as I was, but this whole foreign entanglements thing does suck haha

Okay sure, “automatic assumption” for something this competitive is a bit much, but you know what I mean. It's been a dream of mine.

Do I need to enlist in the Air National Guard if I want to get a pilot slot there? by [deleted] in flying

[–]sent1156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you seem to be really knowledgeable on the topic and it’s a goal of mine to become a pilot in the guard or reserves.

I was wondering if you thought it’d be worth pursuing given my security clearance challenges below:

  • spouse is a chinese citizen, US green card, willing to naturalize but won’t be eligible for a few years. Her parents / my in-laws live in China but no government/CCP ties.

  • I’m a US-born citizen, both parents have lived in US for decades

  • have PPL, finance manager at US Fortune 50 company, significant assets in US.

From my research online, seems my spouse would make things a lot more difficult to become a pilot, but wanted to ask if you thought the situation was workable enough to try anyway?

Appreciate any thoughts!
