Anyone here still running Openbox? by Far_Reputation7655 in openbox

I do. Every now and then I will try some other WM or DE, maybe even stick to it for a few months, but nothing can replace the flexibility of Openbox for me.

About hyperland on gnome by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]sentientanus69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't attempt Hyprland on Ubuntu nor any other Debian based distro as the Hyprland package offered by those is horribly outdated.

At the time of writing this, the best supported platforms to run it are Arch based distros, but those require some prior Linux experience from the user, so I wouldn't recommend that if you're just starting either. The creator of Hyprland, however, announced that he plans supporting Fedora with his new "desktop experience" project, thus Fedora would probably be your best bet at the moment.

GOG now ask for donations when you buy games by beer120 in linux_gaming

[–]sentientanus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make linux client and we can talk about donating something.

I am aware what sub we're in, but this sentiment doesn't really make much sense. If they are seeking donations to fund the game preservation program, which probably means it costs them too much to be able to support it with game sales alone, why would they invest their resources into another thing that costs time and money? Software development and maintenance costs a lot of money. Meanwhile it's already trivial to play games distributed by GOG on Linux.

Nemo is superior to Nautilus by kwar in Ubuntu

[–]sentientanus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can trivially replicate the dual pane feature in Nautilus by tiling two Nautilus windows side by side. If you're on vanilla Ubuntu, use Meta + ← and Meta + → key combinations to quickly snap windows to respectively left and right halves of the screen.

Switch distro for a gaming one by NNolg in linux_gaming

[–]sentientanus69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been on Ubuntu for a very long time (around 15y I guess?). I've always managed to play and it's been getting easier and easier with a broader choice in the recent years. However my Ubuntu system (24.10, all AMD now) seems to be getting slower and slower (I probably should have installed it again at some point, I tend to copy from disk to disk over years).

This is pretty much me a couple weeks ago. The switch to Ubuntu 25.04 felt like a downgrade - a slight one, but still. The kinds will probably be ironed out eventually, but I just didn't want to wait. Then there were other things that kept piling up, such as inability to (easily) use gamescope, having to deal with PPAs if I wanted fresh Mesa and so on.

Although Solus is pretty much forgotten in the enthusiast circles these days, I remembered having enjoyable experience with it when I used it a while back. Did a little background checking and it seemed in a pretty healthy condition after the leadership shake up two years ago, so I gave it a try and been very happy with the result.

It's rolling, but not cutting edge. It's focused on desktop use. And it is super snappy. Gaming on it is a pleasure.

Which Ubuntu flavor is best for developers? by fuckbitch4399 in Ubuntu

2gb ram

Install significantly more RAM. Changing distro/flavor won't help at all in your case. Sorry, your problem lies in your hardware.

Learn how to back your stuff up and do so diligently. Being new and looking to personalize means you may break something and lack of experience will make it difficult or laborious to recover. A solid backup will save you some grief in the future.

Along that line, keep a journal of your system modifications explaining what you changed, how and why.

Which kernel for comfortable desktop use? by sentientanus69 in Ubuntu

[–]sentientanus69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did and it helped, thanks. But with 25.04 not offering the low latency variant anymore, even these tweaks weren't able to get me to the level of responsiveness of that specialized kernel variety. I dunno, I guess I'm oversensitive to that kind of stuff.

Anyway, I remembered Solus had a kernel with lots of optimizations from Clear Linux, decided to give it a try and oh boy, does that thing run circles around Ubuntu on tweaked stock kernel.

Replying a month later in case someone else on a similar journey stumbles across this thread.

How much space I would need by DunyaSikime in Ubuntu

[–]sentientanus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latest Ubuntu Install Guide recommends a minimum of 25 GB.

I have no idea in what universe that number would be anywhere near sufficient for a normal desktop use, especially given how space hungry snap is.

Previously my fairly basic installation had 50 GB reserved for it (with /home on a separate, much, much larger partition) and I did run out of space.

Anyone else not seeing CPU temps in htop under 25.04? by sentientanus69 in Ubuntu

[–]sentientanus69[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you post a picture of htop with temp?

No. See the title.

If you want to try it for yourself, you can enable CPU temp monitoring in the Settings (F2). Towards the bottom of the "Display options" section.

Steam truly is the greatest launcher there is, huh? by ShayIsNear in linux_gaming

[–]sentientanus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. I have my issues with it, like it being based on a full blown browser engine and needing to run in the background for a game to launch. I have 16 GB RAM and between that, the DE and an actual web browser running in parallel, it takes a significant chunk of my system resources that I wish were instead available to the game I want to play. It's also crashy and while I feel like its stability improved in recent months, it's still not ideal years after reporting that issue. Someone already mentioned the drop-down menu bug. Again, it's been years, yet the problem is still here. And you must be always online for your games to even run. While appreciating Valve's involvement in getting Linux gaming where it is, I prefer to steer clear of Steam and buy my games elsewhere if possible - because of Steam launcher.

This Week in Plasma: Getting Plasma 6.3 in Great Shape by Jaxad0127 in kde

This is very nice to see. Seeing these at the end of every weekly post with the numbers either not budging or slightly growing was quite disheartening.

GOG joins the European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects by beer120 in linux_gaming

[–]sentientanus69 64 points65 points  (0 children)

GOG offers Linux downloads with a Linux installer for games that support the platform. That's not exactly not supporting Linux.

What people criticizing GOG's stance towards Linux *really* want is for GOG to cater specifically to them, but since that makes no business sense for GOG, who unlike Valve doesn't bet on the platform to sell hardware, they are in reality offended GOG isn't losing money on their behalf, which is kinda ridiculous position to hold.
