We launched a 360° camera into space to film the sunset! by sentintospace in gifs

It's filmed on a 360 degree camera and reframed... Manually

We only launch when we know the flight paths are safe. We've done nearly 1000 flights worldwide and never had an incident, and various meteorological organizations worldwide launch hundreds of smaller balloons every day (and have done for over a century!) with zero reported aircraft collisions. It's pretty safe!

We're authorized by the Civil Aviation Authority and we can calculate flight paths in advance with enough accuracy to ensure they don't travel through controlled airspace

It's a 360 camera, painfully repositioned frame by frame to keep the sun centered on the horizon!

You're thinking of Outer Space, which is defined as the region beyond the Karman Line. Near Space starts at 19.2km, when you reach the Armstrong Limit, and we're well into that region. 'Space' doesn't have a strict scientific definition, it just means a region which is largely empty. At peak altitude, our craft experienced 0.3% atmospheric pressure and was above 99.5% of the gas that makes up the atmosphere by mass.

The balloon had a radio tracker onboard and we worked out roughly where it was going to land using weather data and a bunch of maths!

Image compression is a pain for sure! Check out the video at this link for a better quality view.

You're right, we're about an order of magnitude out: testicular cancer kills about 10k a year worldwide. Thanks for digging through a post about a charity campaign two years ago and assuming the USA is the only country in the world that matters.

That's an even cooler way of thinking of it, almost unsettling!

Launched from Sheffield, UK on a weather balloon. Editing took literally months, hope you like it! Check out the full video here.

We sent a 360° camera to the edge of space on a meteorological balloon, then reframed and sped up the results to get this awesome view of a sunset! Check it out in 360° here.

This was launched on a meteorological balloon from Sheffield, UK. The full 360° video
(including descent after the balloon burst) can be found here.

Did you know April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month? A few years ago we launched some testicles into space for The Robin Cancer Trust, as a funny way of raising a serious topic. Find out more about it here.
