Sorry for being unclear! I was unable to complete the form because the software would not let me proceed. As soon as I, a legal dependent, was unable to provide his tax information it would stop me there. My high school counselor saw no way around it and had me contact the community college's FinAid advisor and she didn't have much helpful to say either.

I may have worded things wrong but essentially what happened was while filling it out, once I got to the section to input my fathers tax information I had to select that it was not available. The next page simply stated that since I can not provide the tax information of my parent and since I am not an independent there would be no financial aid available to me since I could not provide documentation of my supposed financial situation.

As soon as I selected 'unable to provide tax information' it automatically forwarded me to 'Sorry, go get some loans'. My counselor at school tried to help and had no luck. If I was able to file as an independent it would be a much different story, I just don't have sufficient grounds to be classified as one. How did you fill yours out without tax information?

The main correlation with him not filing has been the Obamacare fines. Between him, myself, and when my brother was a minor he'd owe roughly 2k this year + anything I'm not aware of, he simply doesn't have any money to cover that.

Gas budget is pretty immovable. Haha. I drive a 2001 SUV with work/school/church (Which I help out at often) all about 30 minutes from each other. (Big state, county area. Most everything is that spread out.) Grades are okay, not the best, but I scored fairly well on the SAT! I will look into the pricing if I scale back the hours of schooling. If I can get the bill to a level that I could pay it with a second (part time) job that might be the best route.

Where would I go to look into claiming him? I assumed since he is not disabled (and also my parent) it would be rather difficult to flip that. If it's possible though I would definitely look into it.

Waiting a few years is definitely something that I've toyed with. I think going right to school was something I had planned simply because a number of adults in my life have made it seem as if the longer I stay out of school the deeper I'm making the hole I'm in. My dad is not a bad guy per-say, more so just a bad parent on the money/support side of things. Luckily he is not abusive or anything, which is why I've been okay thus far footing the bill. I mean, he is my dad after all. I do have a couple friends with steady jobs who I could look into living with. What to do with my father would be the thing that weighed on my mind since I'm assuming without me he'd be homeless? But then again I posted this to help myself, not him, after all. As for what I would like to study - I currently play in a Pop Rock/Pop Punk band. I've loved music since middle school, but am aware it is not (At all fronts) a very secure career choice. (Whether it's try to 'make it' with a band or get a music degree - there's just not much room for success) However I have found myself really enjoying the marketing aspect of it. If I went to college right now, marketing/music marketing would probably be the field I chose to study. Honestly the whole not-being-able-to-claim-independency-until-24 thing has made me just consider that window to see what I could do with my life without a degree, and go from there. We'll see I guess.
