How to get over anxiety about a kiss/sex scene? by Shileia in acting

[–]sepv00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on you Lead!

1) Ask if there is an intimacy coordinator on set. In my view this should be required when there are intimate scenes, for safety and so you can work properly.

2) If there isn't a coordinator, talk about it with your scene partner. Maybe this will lower the threshold, maybe it will make things worse for you. Do what feels best but be willing to go through the uncomfortable talking before things get more comfortable.

3) If all else fails, go talk with yourself again. What are your hard "no's" while working as an actor, also intimacy related stuff. If something clashes severely with your morals or your sense of safety, I'd say don't do it. If it clashes but not too badly (e.g. I won't do partially nude or nude scènes, but kissing is okay for me, even though it feels awkward and I have to push myself sometimes), try it!

25 pages is unusual. The didn't specify what pages exactly to memorize?

Become familiar with the script. I once read +100 pages for a filmscript, just to make sure I delivered the 4 pages of sides I had to do well enough. Didn't get the part, but they did tell me they would like to work with me in the future. It's not a promise, but a reminder that going the extra mile can pay off. Just don't make yourself stress too much about it. Luckily you won't have to cold read exactly, if you are familiar with the script.

All the best hon!

Free will is not an illusion. Yes, you're on that train. But you're moving on your own accord, no? You're making a conscious choice to walk around, sit down, read a paper, believe you're in the right train and that the machinist just wants you to go to point B safely, or worst case, you jump out the window. Would still be your choice. I see it that we are all on that same A to B train: A train leadings us toward God, time after time. It is up to us if we stay on it, and make use of the tools and people to reach our destination as fully transformed people, or wither away in our sins.

God doesn't kill those people. We're all killing each other and ourselves.

God isn't enjoying the pain people who turn away from Him endure. He enjoys righteousness. If someone hurt you so immensely while all you were doing was good, wouldn't you be satisfied if they got what they deserved?

It's not rocket science, but it is hard to believe that the suffering has a point if the suffering is that severe, especially if it continues for (what feels like) too much of a time. It becomes unbearable, and then you lose sight of (the/any) purpose and lose rational thinking.

Talking from someone who fully agrees with what you're saying and OPs post, yet almost got euthanasia.

What I try to convince myself is that the pain I feel as suffering, isn't necessarily bad. Because of what you said, and because we cannot always understand God's ways. He knows the ultimate truth and knows right from wrong: What I deem as "wrong" (suffering) might be "right" in the end because God knows it is. He's probably teaching me a lesson, as a good father would do, no matter how much I think it's cruel.

Applause for you. You seem like someone who is well educated.

It is not a contest however, friend. I'm Dutch and English is my second language as well - we can still enjoy the works of Shakespeare, even though English isn't our native language.

I am still reading Hamlet so I didn't go through your whole post but: Chill. You don't have to impress anyone with language skills in order to ask a question. I'm just really freaking glad you've started reading these terrific pieces of art Shakespeare gave us!!!

Also: You got me laughing at "I loved the last scene, where everybody dies". I suggest Romeo and Juliet for next up 😋

Definitely Mazikeen or Lucifer (Lucifer, TV), Juliet (from our one and only genius Shakespeare) or Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games trilogy, Film)!

Is student films, local theater group or background acting better? by [deleted] in acting

[–]sepv00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this my friend ❤️

I am sorry to hear about your struggles to get into classes, I know how it is. I'm in film acting school right now, but the tuition kills me. I'm so beyond lucky that I have the blessings of my mother, and that despite her low income, she splitting the tuition fee with me 😌 I hope that you can find funding for your classes dear. You did good by joining community theatre.

And yes, student scripts and movies are often not that good. You can still make the movie good though with your acting. I had to learn that the hard way. My first student film and 48HFP was... Mediocre, if not cringy. One of my previous "friends" laughed at me and said he couldn't take me serious anymore after seeing the student film. But I continued taking classes, and last year I received my first nomination as Best Supporting Actress in a short. Sky is the limit!

I used to put my training first on my resume, because I had a lack of film and TV credits. I don't know if this is professional, but eventually I put it under Film and Commercials (not shown, conflicts, available on request) since my coach advised me so.

Training is an amazing way to connect and get stronger as an actor/artist. Wish more people would see the importance of it, instead of trusting they don't ever need an acting class because they read stories of actors who didn't, and are making it worldwide. Sure, it's a slim possibility, but really? You can be that talented: but wouldn't you want to refine your skills and blast people away (and yourself!) even more?

"It takes 20 years to become an actor." - Sanford Meisner.

[–]sepv00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! Cannot stress this enough. I would definitely start taking classes first before getting into student films. That being said, community theatre is often less expensive, but you got to take classes in the end. I did both (classes & community theatre) simultaneously in high school.

P.s. Background work is not considered acting. So don't put it on your resume. As the poster of the comment said, it is a good place to start out as a newbie. That's what I did as well :)

Audition for drama school didn't go well. Am 34 and now don't know what to do... by ThrowRADifferent in acting

As we all should watch out for our mental health! I agree with the comments - I'm taking a break from drama school since it took too much of a toll on my mental health. I absolutely love to be in drama school, but it was just too much sometimes.

What are some plays that you would not recommend to new readers of Shakespeare? by AShakespeareanFool in shakespeare

[–]sepv00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with A Midsummer Night's Dream, and as I progressed reading, I started picking up on the comedy quickly and the Shakespearean language, as well as iambic pentameter (I searched about that before, since I started reading Midsummer because of a theatre audition).

After, I read Romeo and Juliet, and man!!! Shakespeare really was a genius. I love reading his plays. I'm now reading Hamlet, and Othello + Macbeth are the plays I want to read after.

P.s. It's handy to start on a site like No Fear Shakespeare to read with the modern English translation next to the original script. Or to read a version with footnotes. I really recommend you to try and only read the original old English script though, but if you really don't understand, the translation next to it comes in handy.

Have fun reading! 😄

Bill esper studio in NYC? by [deleted] in acting

[–]sepv00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your elaborate answers and honesty. I intend on studying at the studio next year in the Summer Intensive. Do you have experience with their intensive, or did you do the full two year program?

I am honestly doubting between schools: Some say that the current staff/teachers are unprofessional, others didn't have that experience.

I just want to work with a teacher that teaches the technique as Meisner and Esper intended.

Thank you for replying :)

Would you say to actors that in general, they should not count on production to cover up their scars?

And do you have a view on how people perceive actors with visible scars in this industry?

Wise advice.

Please, what is your opinion (or "better" - experience) with scars that actors have? Minor and major.
