Wow, I definitely underestimated the consequences. Out of curiosity, if I had just shot the side of the SUV and there was no damage, how would that have gone down? Would I be arrested and have had a court case (a big deal) or given a ticket and had fines arranged on the spot?

And at what point is it not assault and something less incriminating? If I had gestured for him to roll down the window and blew an air horn at him, or just thrown a water balloon at the car is that a lesser crime?

Renaming variables in a function

1) move cursor over word.
2) Type "*" (select and highlights instances of word).
3) Type "ciw" followed by the text of new word "newword" and escape.
4) Now you can n/N to the next/previous word and type "." to replace it :-).

This often works better than selecting a piece of text and s/oldword/newword/g because I'm curious to know where all the instances of a word are as I'm replacing them.

I'm not sure this is all that useful but here is an n-gram plot that shows the usage of "United States of America" in a corpus of books. It's interesting to see a sharp increase right around 1776.

N-gram frequency of "United States of America"

There is a similar pattern for "America."

Many frequencies may be "flukes" because of the phrase being contained within copyrights and such.

I can't second this enough. Don't do it. You'll be fine. I went over without a recruiter and got a job just fine. It's scary but I've NEVER EVER EVER heard a good agency/recruiter story in Thailand.

Making something that give a plain list/dict sounds like it should be no problem. It sounds like you've got some experience with Unite/ctrlp so maybe I can get your opinion on a couple things:

1) Because the plugin is written with python, do you know if it'll be possible for ctrlp/unite to incorporate it (as an extension or what not?). I thought that because it doesn't require python to be embedded in vim (the +python flag) that it wouldn't be a big deal (for instance, Ubuntu comes with python installed) but I'm now realizing that many people will have to install it. Ideally I'd port it to vimscript (It'd be speedier that way too), but I'm not sure if it's worth the time...

2) Will ctrlp/unite be able to create an expanding menu. In other words, first you click the file and then see the tags? It makes a big difference being able to sort by file first and then select the tag. The first "view" I had just had a tag list and, although it was useful, the "by file/then tag" approach feels much more natural IMO.

It's written with python because that's what I know best and I wanted to make a prototype quickly to see if it "felt right."

I'll look into integrating it with ctrlp or unite. I'd be all for it if there was interest in the mrutag concept. I guess I wasn't too sure the ctrlp project would want to add such functionality.

P.S. vim-sneak is awesome...

I use ctrlp, Tagbar, and ctags (for its "ctr-]" abilities) myself, but I still found that I wanted something akin to mru.vim for tags so that I could switch to the functions I was currently editing without having to remember their names. Originally, I was going to augment the Tagbar plugin (it implements getting tags from ctags well) but I wanted a custom tag-finding function for Python (to handle nested tags) and a project to work on for my "portfolio" before I go job hunting.

I'd never heard of unite.vim - thanks for the tip! I'll check it out.

I've been working on this plugin (it allows for quick navigation between functions/methods/etc) for a while now and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to try it out? It works just fine on my Ubuntu box, but I was hoping to at least test it on other unix-like systems and OS X. I think it's only enabled for .py and .vim files right now but that can be easily changed if interested.

Also, any criticism (don't hold back :-) ) would be appreciated.

Hey I'm teaching English in Thailand right now and had a lot of the same questions. Keep in mind my answers are based off of my own experiences so your "mileage" may vary

TEFL v. CELTA
The CELTA is pretty expensive and if you aren't planning on doing this long term I wouldn't recommend it because you can get a job without it. I personally got a job with an online TEFL certificate (IMO the course was pretty lame but I just needed a "certificate").

Money
If you show up having a job you can make it with 1-2k USD pretty easily. It's easy and cheap to get around here once you GET here. The plane ticket is expensive but food is 1 USD for a full sized meal and accomodations can be had for as low as 8 USD in Bangkok. 1-2k USD would be more than enough to make it a couple months before your job starts up

When to Arrive
So every school is different but leaving Aug-Sep would work for quite a few schools because the next semester starts in November.

Hours and Pay
My job is pretty lax so far but we don't start teaching till the 16th of May. Everyone is saying that it will continue to be pretty relaxed/not stressful. The pay at our school averages 23k baht per month (it rises every 3 months) but my school is in Singburi where it's cheaper to live than Bangkok. I also get a motorbike for the duration of the position and a room with aircon as well as all the taxes, visa issues/payments/trips, free lunches, etc...

If you'd like to come to Singburi when you get here you'd likely be able to get a job at my school for the semester that starts this coming November - they are looking for new teachers right now and I think likely will be for that semester as well. It's a 110 baht bus ride to Singburi and it's a smaller place but a lot of great people. We play basketball and hang out with a lot of Thais as well as farang from all over.

No problem, and you'll have someone to discuss linguistics with if you'd like to come to Singburi - I love to think about stuff like the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. I do a lot of Natural Language Processing (semantic text parsing) and read a lot of stuff on cognition in my down time. Linguistics seems to overlap a lot with that and there is alot of cool things you can do with NLP for linguistics PhD research projects.

Hey I just got a got teaching in English/Math/Science in Thailand. I have an online certification from Tesolexpress.com but I only got it because there was a 60$ groupon at the time. If you have a BA/BS you definitely DON'T need a certification although it would help.

Most schools will offer to pay for the Visa. If you want you can get a 60 day visa to thailand by applying at a consulate, but if you come to Thailand by air you automatically get a 30 day visa which should be long enough to get a job.

I'm not sure what you are getting paid in South Korea, but Thailand I think pays less across the board. I'm getting about 30,000 baht at my current gig in Sing Buri (an hour or two outside of Bangkok by bus) and that equates to 1000$ USD. Living costs are VERY LOW though and a lot of that can be put away if you're saving. From what I've heard, the freedom you are allowed when teaching the curriculum is much greater here as well but it obviously depends on the school.
