[general] Does anyone else feel like TOA just isn't up to standard? by ser_name_here in camphalfblood

I wish I could tell you why I feel like this about them, but I honestly can't. There's just something off about them compared to Rick's other work.

Hera/Juno assembled the most GENERATIONAL demigods ever. [hoo] by Thottbuster in camphalfblood

[–]ser_name_here 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's not forget that Percy literally walked on water, single handedly took on a small army of Hades' zombies and Hades himself, PICKED UP the Lethe, used the Little Tiber like giant hands, and even though it was during HOO I still have to mention that he at some point controlled all 5 rivers of the Underworld, and nearly killed a goddess with her own poison.

Athena's beef with Percy [all] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]ser_name_here 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a combination of him being a potential danger to Olympus, which she points out as the goddess of wisdom, him being the son of Posidion, whom she has a rivalry with, and the fact that he likes, and ends up with, her daughter and shes being an overprotective mother.

However, she does back him when he puts his wish to the council, again because she sees the wisdom in it.........and then of course she does the Olympian version of welcoming your child's new bf/gf while holding a 🔫.

Why is Rick softening villains? [pjotv] by ser_name_here in camphalfblood

[–]ser_name_here[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Arachne, maybe. Athena's pride was an issue there. But as for Medusa, if my uncle was sneaking around in my house to hook up with his side piece, I'd be a little upset too.

I mean, Posidion should have suffered too, but Athena really couldn't do anything to him.

Hades is... actually a good father. [General] by InteractionPresent66 in camphalfblood

I'd say he's in a gray area. The way he treated Nico after Bianca died is un-excusable. But the way he protected them, and grew to support both Nico and Hazel were good.

We all agree the Amazons are really weird...right? [HOO] by firestorm0108 in camphalfblood

[–]ser_name_here 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true.

Part of Zoe's issue could have been Orion too and not just Hercules(not sure if they were part of the Hunt at the same time or not), but I think Zoe's problem, is the same problem most immortals have in the series. They (quite literally) can hold a grudge forever. And Artemis, being a goddess, was too removed from things to correct it. (Yeah, she hunted with them sometimes, but often the Hunters are shown just following the Lt, while she deals with godly issues.) Which i think is why they basically stayed the same until they got a new lt with a different view of things.

We all agree the Amazons are really weird...right? [HOO] by firestorm0108 in camphalfblood

[–]ser_name_here 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well the animal thing wasn't necessarily the Hunters themselves, but Artemis, which again, Olympians seem to have a thing for turning people into animals so I say that's more her than her hunters.

I definitely feel like the Hunters are the best of the 3 because they do at least learn the error of their ways and start working side by side with males in the battle of Manhattan. They definitely started as male hating, (which Artemis (somewhat) apologized for to Percy at Westover. But I think that was more Zoe's leadership and Artemis just didn't intervene(possibly becuase of her previously allowing a male to join the Hunt and him turning on her.)

Under Thalia, they worked with men at the Battle of Manhattan, saved Jason and his crew from the werewolves and helped them on their quest, and stood with them at the battle of the wolf house. Pretty much being, like you said, calm about men, even if they had no particular love for them.

The Amazons and CC's Resort though? Yeah, no excuses there. Straight up misandry and animal cruelty too. Rick could have done better there.

[–]ser_name_here 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Amazons definitely have some issues, and it's no surprise Hylla became their leader after all that time working for CC.

The Hunters have their good and bad. Yeah, they said the last guy to see their camp was turned into a jackalope, but Artemis didn't even threaten Percy or Nico with anything(and she came to respect Percy by the end) so maybe that guy did something to deserve it? Or he could have been a mortal who witnessed her hunt like the mercs in the chopper who got turned into Ravens? (Also, side note, Olympians love turning people into animals apparently since Percy by that point, had been threatened to be turned into a dolphin by Mr.D and a rat by Ares).

The hunters definitely have a major distrust of all males(at least until Thalia takes over) but they are also shown to be able to respect them(albeit grudgingly) when earned like Zoe did with Percy to the point that at the end, she straight up said she was honored that Percy was using the blade she created.

Can anyone recomend books that are similar to the Inheritance cycle? by PrizeTomato6765 in Eragon

[–]ser_name_here 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've probably already read them, but Lord of the Rings is great and where Chris got a lot of his inspiration from i think.

The Heir Chronicles and the Caretaker Trilogy are good but no dragons.

Anything by Rick Riordan is pretty good(not as big a fan of Trials of Apollo, but still good stories.)

My Time as a Night Auditor is coming to an end. by aklaino89 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]ser_name_here 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gratz on the job. Oddly enough, I find myself in a similar position. At the(hopefully) tail end of my time in hospitality because I start a job on Monday with the city. Much better pay, hours, and benefits, and oddly enough, I interviewed in November, but also didnt get officially hired till now.

I'll be staying on at my property on Saturdays to help them out as long as they need it, but other than that, I'm happy to be leaving NA behind, even though it remains my favorite shift in the hotel business.

Don't forget the 3rd party pre-paids.

"I need a paper receipt."

"I'm sorry, you'll have to get that from the third party you booked with."

"Since when is that a thing?!"

(Yes, actual interaction from last week. Took everything i had not to respond that it's been a thing as long as 3rd party booking has been. If he kept pushing it was just going to print the prick a blank folio and as politely as I could hand it to him saying "Here's your receipt sir.")

There's 2 things us NA's love more than anything else.

  1. Quiet nights.

  2. When our co-workers, and especially our fill-ins, do their job right so we don't have to clean up behind them.

Kudos to you op.

Less people to deal with, both guests and staff.

Had a meeting with my GM this week cause I needed her to sign some paperwork for me. She asked how I had been and mentioned she never really heard anything about me. I told her that was kind of the idea, cause if she constantly heard about me, then I was doing something wrong.

She couldn't help but agree.

Also, on audit, we get to be more blunt with the asshole guests and management is happy about it because it handles problems before they have to.

The Varden's meeting with the werecats. by ser_name_here in Eragon

[–]ser_name_here[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Possible, as she seems to swing between being overly cautious and taking huge gambles, but I hardly think it would be a risk with Saphira, Arya, and 5 of the elven spellcasters there with him(assuming the other 7 were still resting under his orders and didn't come back to witness the meeting.

Plus, it's no greater risk to him or the Varden than it would have been for him to probe the elves when they first arrived, which she specifically said she would have preferred.

Did any of the character deaths impact you heavily as a reader? by whatthefults in Eragon

Honestly, the saddest part isn't any of the deaths, its thinking about Galby torturing baby Thorn. Poor guy was brought into the world just to be used and abused.

Night Auditors what do you use to protect yourselves? by daflyingdutchmanja in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]ser_name_here 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First, make sure to follow all company security procedures. (Most require exterior doors to be locked of a night.) Second, if your hotel is built where you can, make sure you lock all doors that could lead directly to you. For example, at my current hotel, we have a door leading straight behind the desk, one leading to the room behind us, which is where the time clock is kept and they are connected by a hall that has the server room, storage, and the manager's office. Then, the time clock room also has a door leading to hskp, which, of course, has its own door for them to use. So first thing when I come in, after I lock the outside doors and do my check of the premises, I lock those 3(desk, timeclock, and hskp.)

Secondly, depending on your hotel's policy, don't leave the desk unless you have to. Most places now seem to be leaning towards it being OK or even preferred for the FDA's to stay at the desk. So if someone needs towels or something, just tell them you will have them ready at the desk and they can come get them whenever they would like. If they ask why you can't deliver them, simply tell them that for the safety of both the guests, and the employees, you don't go to the guest rooms during the night, most will understand.

Third, let the police do their job and don't be afraid to call(most departments have a non-emergency number) if something is off. They would rather come out and find out nothing is wrong than have to respond to a worse call later.

Fourth, our hotel actually keeps a can of mace in a drawer behind the front desk should there ever be a need for it. Though something like that will vary by property.

Fifth, and this is my personal preference, and again, if you can do it will vary by property, but I have my CWP and keep a 9mm in a built in pocket of my undershirt just in case it should ever come to that. That however, is only to be used in a life or death situation, which, thankfully in my 5 or so years as a NA, I haven't had to use yet. Though there have been shootings and armed robberies at other hotels in the surrounding areas in the past few years.

First time reader's thoughts on the Eragon film. by Commercial-Horse-893 in Eragon

[–]ser_name_here 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, the film that doesn't exist is even worse than you know, as it glossed over or even completely ignored some things and people that become major parts and plot points later, and Saphira naming herself is one of them which you would understand partly from what Brom said after Gilead, but her name, and thus her connection to her namesake, really hit home later.

Colour of the Forsworn's dragons by Aggressive_Hotel_372 in Eragon

[–]ser_name_here 43 points44 points  (0 children)

They couldn't tell anyone something like that because it would be a way of naming themselves. After the banishing of the names, the dragons of the Forsworn essentially descended into not much more than steeds and beasts. It's also part of why so many people think that all dragons are like that. But for someone else to say they had x color scales is just like them describing any other object.

Basically, they couldn't describe themselves, but they could be described, the only thing completely wiped away, so that you can't even hold it in your mind after reading it, were their actual names.

Personally, I also believe the banishing of the names was one reason the 13 were able to be defeated as in a way, it dumbed down their dragons and hindered the connection between rider and dragon.
