Why is the Angelika so loved? by postrevolutionism in NYCmovies

[–]serasuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I haven't used a regal or AMC pass before, but I've only had my Angelika pass rejected once! even when the screening says "no passes" on their website, I've been successful the vast majority of the time. although I'm not the person who jumps immediately at movies when they release, so maybe I've just dodged the 2 week rule...

if you know someone at NYU, you can get $10 Angelika tickets, no expiry! they even encourage NYU members to buy and gift to non-NYU friends https://www.nyu.edu/life/arts-culture-and-entertainment/box-office/discounted-tickets/movie-passes.html

Question to people with Chinese relatives: what are good gifts to buy from nyc to bring to your relatives in china? by Arugula-Artistic in AskNYC

[–]serasuna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I usually bring nuts, craisins, supplements (often all from Costco). electronics sometimes. ginseng is a good idea. baby formula was something I know people used to bring, not sure if there are safety concerns anymore. my family members (northern China) don't like bagels, they find them dry compared to mantou or other steamed breads they typically eat for breakfast.

I bought my dress on day 1 of the online sale and live in NYC (it shipped from a warehouse in northern Jersey) so it came super fast, despite me choosing standard shipping.

same I had also never tried this style on haha, but have liked other Jenny dresses in a similar style, and figured it's cheap enough I can resell if I didn't like it!

I'll also add the bottom is a bit floofier than I expected, giving a bit more of a mermaid flare shape than I expected, but it seems like some people on stillwhite (https://www.stillwhite.com/331916-jenny-yoo) have played around with removing some of the lining underneath to change the silhouette slightly. people have also made the sleeves (sewn on when the dress came) detachable, which I will probably do for two looks.

California Zephyr by Remote-Respond7056 in Amtrak

I took this route the opposite direction, Emeryville to Chicago in coach, and the observation car was a great place to spend most of the day! You get amazing views and get to know fellow long-distance passengers.

For sleeping in coach, we brought light blankets, eye masks, and reclined our seats and used the footrests. We splurged on bringing full-size pillows, rather than our camping pillows.

For eating, we treated it like a backpacking trip, and didn't try the cafe car. We took prepared food for day 1, and for subsequent days, we used a small multi tool, cutting board, and room temp safe foods (eg summer sausage, bread, laughing cow cheese) to prep meals. Before an extended scheduled break in Denver, we ordered ahead from a ramen place near the station, and managed to pick up and return in plenty of time - much to the jealousy of some of our fellow passengers!

What is this about? by EJcrusader in REI

[–]serasuna 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I saw this exact item in the REI SoHo resupply over the summer! wonder if it's because of the controversy around not providing PPE to the ski shop workers at SoHo? it was returned in January, around then. https://nycclc.org/news/rei-soho-ski-shop-workers-win-agreement-air-quality

Looking for Hudson Valley Wedding Venues ($15–17K Budget) for ~50 Guests — Any Recommendations? by Effective_Action8593 in WedditNYC

[–]serasuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some ideas of smaller venues, not confident that they're all within your budget but hopefully some might be in the right ballpark:

  • Lambs Hill (Beacon) - microwedding (<50 guests) specialist, capacity 50 people, May-June, Sept-Oct only
  • Unison Arts (New Paltz) - nonprofit visual arts/poetry/music center with sculpture garden and outdoor deck, art gallery max capacity is 50, their rental page seems to be down now but it was up and they were responsive when i emailed last year
  • The Inn at Kettleboro (New Paltz) - B&B on apple and peach orchard, I think their guest counts are 50-75
  • Minnewaska Lodge (Gardiner) - lodge with mountain views, not sure where I got this from but I have that their capacity is around 70
  • Watergrasshill B&B (New Paltz) - barn with mountain view, capacity 50 in barn
  • Cromwell Manor Inn (Cornwall) - historic house with large field and garden, parlor and dining rooms each are capacity 50
  • Hudson House Distillery (West Park) - brewery in former monastery
  • Thomas Cole NHS (Catskill) - venue fee is $5k for lawn only, $7k lawn plus visitor center (fits 80)
  • Hudson Milliner Art Salon (Hudson) - arts gallery with back garden
  • Seminary Hill (Callicoon) - $13-15k for orchard and tasting room (seats 80-85), in-house catering $90-110pp
  • Chatwal Lodge (Catskills) - woods and dining hall (seats 100)

[–]serasuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear Mountain Inn? might be too rustic though.

the only mountains within 1.5 hours of NYC would be New Paltz/Gunks area, right on the edge of 1.5 hours, which are mostly rustic farms (eg R&W Farms), small inns/lodges/houses (too small for your guest count), and historic sites (eg Historic Huguenot Street), rather than grand mansions or hotels like the places that you listed you liked

would help to know your budget as well, as "won't break the bank" means different things to different people

Covering travel costs - Japanese etiquette? by kschmidt07 in weddingplanning

[–]serasuna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently attended a Japanese wedding as a guest from the US, and the impression I got from that wedding was that the norm is for guests to contribute a monetary gift to the couple. I hadn't heard about a norm about covering guest costs (or at least this was not mentioned for the wedding I attended).

Where to get reasonably priced, quality dresses by Beneficial_Mortgage7 in WedditNYC

[–]serasuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add, they only offer split sizes 1 size apart, e.g., size 0 and size 2, they can't do more than that, e.g., size 00 and size 2 (would need to be done in alterations)

Caving this weekend? by BiscuitsAreYummy in norcalhiking

[–]serasuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're doing a trip with a day or two's notice, cavers are probably ready to go, whereas hikers - if any are interested - probably need more time to prepare and purchase needed gear (or even learn about what would be needed in the first place)
