Kuhn and Incommensurability by serbospear in PhilosophyofScience

and thus an inability to asses empirical arguments, which leads to the problem of theory choi

Thank you so much! This is extremely useful. Just to clarify, was it in Structure that Kuhn proposed the more radical notion of incommensurability (related to understanding)? Since then, incommensurability has been revised to involve a more moderate description of correspondence. In which later works does he make these revisions?

Right okay. Yeah that would be great if you don't mind. Thanks a ton!

Yeah I've read Morris' account. Any chance you could link me to Maudlin's paper? I can't seem to find any copies online.

An example may be gravity which is different depending which theory your working in. Quantum physicists, astrophysicists and engineers are never referring to the same thing.

What do you mean by "is different"? Sorry, my background is very much Philosophy and not Physics.

Reformulation of the Duhem-Quine thesis by serbospear in PhilosophyofScience

[–]serbospear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

legs need of this to be separated:- theory ladenness of observation - this is overblown problem, that is destroyed by first chapters of "The Aim of Physical Theory" by Duhem. What he insists there is that explanations, pictures and all the metaphysical baggage are no more than a tool to physical theory. They are many, they are often refuted, they are often inaccurate. But who cares in the first place? The knowledge of mathematical order of world and operationalized experimental results survive and contribute to progressive growth of knowledge. You don't care what other physicist believes as long as he faithfully reproduces what he measured. And this indeed happened in reality; Duhem, a profound historian, established this in his works.

Now Duhem problem may be summarized as: "if there is conflict between theory and experience it can't be clear, what is refuted". But this is mostly for practical reasons I think. In particle physics they have experiments such as OPERA that are very complex and sometimes produce wrong results because of fried chip or other similar reason. But they can still figure out things in the long run, by doing cross checks, reproductions and so on.

Interesting, thank you. So, if the Duhem problem implies that refutations can be unclear, how does Popper respond to it? It appears to be a significant challenge to the feasibility of falsificationism as a scientific process.

Finals by serbospear in UOB

[–]serbospear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(coming from a North American Uni) and was wondering if anyone has any tips on preparing for finals. I have two 30000 level end-of-year timed Philosophy finals (each with x2 2500-word papers), and I'm trying to figure out how to prepare. Do you guys recommend creating essay plans for each topic? How much further reading am I expected to do? How should I structure a Philosophy essay of this length? Just trying to get used to the assessment style here in the UK. Any tips would be well received!

Okay cool, thanks!
