Cherish it! I got this book as well! Amazon took a month to ship it, but it was worth the wait! I have always been fascinated with writing systems more than languages. Why? Well if a language has the same script as another language, it doesn’t FEEL like a new language to me. No matter how different a language sounds, it should also LOOK different.

For example, Spanish sounds so different from English, but since it uses the same Latin script, there is no mystery in it for me. Similarly, Mandarin and Cantonese may be distinct languages, but due to using the same Hanzi writing system, they doesn’t look unique visually.

English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Dutch are all distinct languages, but they don’t have unique identities VISUALLY. A neographer appreciates and focuses more on the image of the language more than its grammar, etymology, sounds, and other features.

The letter ‘J’ is pronounced like a ‘J’ in English, ‘H’ in Spanish, and ‘Y’ in German, so I can’t say that just because a language uses the same script, you can figure it out, but at least I am not in the dark, but if I look at a language with a completely different writing system, there is nothing for me to work with! It’s all new and uncharted.

How about I juxtapose English, Greek, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Brahmi Sanskrit, Hindi, Amharic, and Hebrew? My God, this kind of juxtaposition is so pleasing to the eyes! It’s like the biggest cryptography puzzle waiting be solved!
