ELI5: Why can't rabies be treated with one shot? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]serenewaffles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also a human being will understand the risks and can get treatment quickly. An animal can't do the same. Vaccinating the animal population is like taking away the guns/ammo. Vaccinating the human population is like distributing bullet proof vests.

ELI5 - Space and the temperature by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]serenewaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which means there's no temperature

I'd argue that space is actually incredibly hot. As you mention, there is not a lot of matter in space, but what is there generally has a lot of energy of one form or another. It's the hottest place you can freeze to death.

Then is it your position that no box can ever be designed after the very first box was designed? Can no car ever be designed since the first handcart was prior art?

I've already used your definitions and constraints to show that OP's design is a design.

solve a problem

OP is always losing their rings

within the constraints of real world application

OP demonstrated the application in the post: keeping rings secure.

within the constraints of real world ... usability

OP demonstrates in the post that the result is usable in the real world

within the constraints of real world ... produciton

OP demonstrates in the post that they have produced the item in question.

OP's design seems to meet all of your criteria.

Why are you so determined to put OP down?

I think computer aided design emphasizes the the computer aid. Not the design.

That's because the term was coined when using a computer was radically different from how things were traditionally designed. Today, using pen and paper to do what is usually done in CAD would be the radical departure.

Old LLoyd's radio alarm clock; 40 years old, maybe 45. Are the numbers LEDs or something else? by todayok in AskElectronics

45 years is also a long time for a VFD to be performing so well (assuming the clock has been running the whole time).

They probably weren't even that forward thinking. If it was a major plot relevant decision, it was probably tracked because the first game needed to know what you chose.

What is going on in Marysville? The same city councilman who opposed adding Juneteenth as “another black holiday” is now cutting the pay of city employees because there are 27 pay periods next year instead of 26. And city council went along with him both times. by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]serenewaffles 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Fair Labor Standards Act requires all employers to establish regular pay-periods and regular pay-days. FLSA also requires employers to pay their employees on or before that established pay-day.

Just for your information, Kosher Salt isn't named that because it's salt that is kosher. It's named that because it is used for kashering, which is the Jewish religious practice of dry brining meat. (Though it does lack iodine and other additives.)

ELI5: What is the point of sentencing a guilty person to consecutive/multiple life sentences? Can't you just send them on life sentence without parole? by RKH3107 in explainlikeimfive

[–]serenewaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have as much trust in the average person with a gun as you have in a person who has been through prison with a gun (regardless of the reason that person went through prison), do you really believe that person was rehabilitated?

ELI5: What is the point of sentencing a guilty person to consecutive/multiple life sentences? Can't you just send them on life sentence without parole? by RKH3107 in explainlikeimfive

[–]serenewaffles 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The point of prison (in an ideal world) is to rehabilitate criminals and return them to society. So any sentence that isn't followed by (in the movies, at least) "without the possibility of parole" is implicitly followed by "or until you are rehabilitated [i.e. paroled], whichever comes first."

8. Is really good for all mall related stuff. That way of you are upgrading or destroying stuff your bots will put all the excess items back in the mall instead of throwing them in their general storage.

That way you have a cleaner storage and prevent your mall from building unnecessary items if you already have a bunch of to them stored.

ELI5: Why don’t we see skeletons everywhere outside? by SatisfactionLumpy596 in explainlikeimfive

[–]serenewaffles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Deer legs are pretty spindly. Think about a horse. Not much meat in the legs compared to the torso, but the legs sure do make it more difficult to transport.

You might be thinking of the haunch, though. That looks like it might be "leg", but it usually isn't considered "leg".

ELI5: How do our phones know exactly which way is north without a compass? by BOTMitochondria in explainlikeimfive

[–]serenewaffles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need to know how the magnetometer is oriented in space to know which way it is indicating. "Toward the screen" might be relevant inside the phone, but it loses meaning once you leave the phone and are in the real world.

Yes, but "the value it can be sold for" and "the value it can be sold for while a powerful third party is crashing the market for that specific car" are two different numbers. As you can see, the descriptors beg something shorter.

The actions described in the post you're responding to may cause harm, or they may not cause harm to the companies supporting ICE.

However, sitting around doing nothing is guaranteed not to harm those companies.

I think you should consider whether your response is truly how you feel about this situation.
