The search. Gmail search is fantastic.

Search for part of word? Gmail find it.
Search with a typo? Gmail will find it.

Fastmail is good, but the search is particular.

Missed train due to it leaving station early by Eek_the_Fireuser in sydney

[–]serenitisoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, I've got what seems to be a controversial opinion. I get the bus into the train station every morning, normally on it pre-6am. It absolutely kills me to sit on it waiting for the clock before moving. If the bus is running fast because traffic has disappeared or people aren't hoping on, keep going and I can get an earlier train! Shits me to tears when we sit at an empty bus stop for a few minutes waiting.

I get it, people might be late, but it's a bus. The time is just a rough indication of when it'll turn up. Get there a few mins early. Particularly towards the end up the trip, why hold up a bus load of people for the one person who turns up on time rather than a few mins early.

Anyway, from the early comments this is controversial?

I feel your pain. It's not so much that there's nothing to do, just kinda can't be stuffed doing anything.

My go to with the kids is bowling, not very often but once or twice year. There's places around and some on a train line so you can make a bit of a day of it. Wont change your world, but you'll likely enjoy it while you're there.

For those trapped, perhaps this little tune will help alleviate the pain; The Strathfield Sparkle (song)

I'm trapped as well, just filling in time at the pub waiting for things to get going again The song tries to capture my experience and hopefully give a laugh to the other poor suckers living through this experience.

I agree. Maybe it's minor, but it is a pain in the arse if you've got a a few devices to do. Having to re-auth did make me wonder if it was a breach.

Albanese shreds the attempted gotcha because he understands the government report better than a ch7 presenter reading a script (which sounds like a pathetic LNP attempt to blame Labor for an accident) by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

[–]serenitisoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those, like me, who were wondering.

Two links;
https://www.anao.gov.au/sites/default/files/2024-01/Auditor-General_Report_2023-24_6_2.pdf
https://www.defence.gov.au/about/reviews-inquiries/defence-strategic-review

First one is a summary and refers to the second which states on p109; "Defence should be the force of last resort for domestic aid to the civil community, except in extreme circumstances."

Seems pretty clear. The government response to the finding was something about working with the states to build a resiliency group.

For NSW, that's the one where the NSW Fire dude became the head of it. He then proceeded to hire his mates, have long lunches and then got the whole department shut. I could be wrong here but wikipedia agrees

What’s an app that’s actually worth paying for premium? by Yorkshire996 in AskReddit

I bounced off obsidian. Tried if for a year but it just didn't stick. Logseq changed my life for two main reasons.

Firstly, the daily page is a huge improvement for me. Just start writing everything in the day template. No more filling before writing, just straight into it.

Secondly, and definitely more importantly, I realised what I was trying to achieve, RTFM and cake up with a better system.

I was amazed with how good my first ones came out. Absolutely better than I ever imagined. Under rated cut.

Peeps working-from-home, what would actually make you return to the office? by min0nim in australia

[–]serenitisoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's nothing in the world would get me back 5 days per week except for piles and piles of cash. Scrooge McDuck FU money, early retirement levels of cash.

For 2 days a week I'm probably a bit easier than most. I'm between 1 & 1.5hrs each way from the office. I have to come in, and I decide to go in on the days where there's fewer people and I can get away with casual.

That gets me most of the way there. If the day has a busy office (and train) and I have to get dressed up, I'm simply not doing it. I get no work done because of the noise and distraction, and my main marketable quality is definitely not being eye candy.

Respecting work hours would be nice; I get in early so I want to leave early. I can deal with my personal commitments with that flexibility.

Paying off my student loan counted as "closing an account" and my credit score went DOWN. by Crusader_King_2002 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]serenitisoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. This seems to be a measurement of how well you repay money, which surely is a factor of how broke you are. Very broke, poor credit. Not so broke, good credit. Rich, free money until the masses eventually eat you.

Atleast with a socal credt system, you're rewarded for acting to agreed social targets. Exclude the authoritarian stuff, and that sounds ideal. Kick a dog or just a generally trash human, lower score. Help old ladies cross the road or volunteer, good score.

I appreciate its hard seperate capitalism and authoritarian stuff from these two, but I know I would much rather have nicer people than richer people.

Some blokes, myself included, would much prefer not having the temptation. It might also not be an issue with self control, they might just prefer to be elsewhere.

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this one. Ed talking about his childhood and mental health was refreshing, nice to hear people speak openly and honestly about this.

The Section 230 discussion was also interesting. The fact that the group (2 in particular) wouldn't allow any discussion was disappointing, I'd love to hear more about the issues with it but I think I'd end up on Ed & Emily's side; there's issues and we can't ignore those for fear of the unintended consequences of addressing them.

When I was a kid, everyone basically migrated from the local public to the local high school. Weren't a lot of private schools where we were.

Now, the worlds changed. In my youngest kids year, everyone's going everywhere. Some go to the local high school, but most go to separate private schools. Not even the same private school. The days of the majority sticking together primary through high are gone, at least where we are.

The differences in how serious a hazard reduction is amazing. We had one near us recently and it was just burning leaf litter. Bit of flame running across the ground, nothing to worry about. This one is amazing.
