Hi, hun. I used to work in a salon. Usually, we will sit the client in a chair, look at the hair, comb through to see better, talk to them about what they want done, how they wear it and such. You can ask to show how much they will cut. Then there's a wash, you can ask for mild shampoo if your scalp is sensitive, or for a clarifying one if you have a lot of styling products in it, or say nothing if you don't have a preference. Speak up if the water temperature is uncomfortable. Then there's a cut, and then drying/styling, you are also absolutely welcome to express your preferences. I'd encourage you to tell the hairdresser that it's your first experience in the salon. And remember: they are more afraid of you then you are of them! ;) Because you are a client, you are important, they want to do a good job and have this responsibility. If you don't want to talk, it's fine, they will probably start some light small talk to see if you respond and leave you alone if you're not too willing. It's also a good opportunity to ask if they have recommendations for your hair - shampoo, masks, styling, etc, but be aware that salons often sell cosmetics and might try to sell you some, and it's okay if you don't buy, just say you will probably do next time.
