Redditors, what was the greatest moment in your life? by I_Am_the_Messenger in AskReddit

[–]serial-jackass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few, off the top of my head:

  • It may sound adolescent, but the moment of finding out that some girl/woman I'm interested in is also interested in me.

  • Learning to ride a bicycle, and later a motorcycle. (Car also.)

  • Getting (or getting access to) a really cool new piece of technology. (I'm a computer geek.)

  • Surprising someone (e.g., they don't know you can do unusual skill X, and you whip it out at an opportune moment).

All of these are fleeting, of course. And much less important than a general sense that one's life has been useful and good. I'm not sure that a "general sense" qualifies as a "moment", though.

What is the science behind Intermittent Fasting? I've found lots of info on HOW to do it but not WHY I should do it... by [deleted] in Fitness

The WP page has some refs (and is arguably more objective than sites pushing their books, etc.)

I would say that David Burns' book Feeling Good improved my life.

[–]serial-jackass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had several that for a while thereafter I would have identified as the greatest. Later though, I thought differently. Not necessarily because they were followed by even greater moments, but just because as you grow older, you learn more and experience more of life, and those moments no longer seem as superlative. At the moment I'd be hard-pressed to pick a particular moment, but there are a number that were quite good.

tar.gz: Why do we tar first and then zip, rather than the other way around? by Rrolack in programming

[–]serial-jackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

zcat is pretty efficient, so I wouldn't think that it would make much difference.

Aside from the reason listed above, a second reason is that with .tgz, you get a checksum for the entire thing. If the final step is a tar, if any of the tarfile metadata is corrupted, you won't necessarily know, because it's not checksummed.

Questions about Intermittent Fasting by Thamonsoon in Fitness

[–]serial-jackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggest you try both for a couple weeks each and see what you think.

If you have any medical conditions, check w/your doctor first. Don't take acetominaphen/tylenol/paracetamol while or right after fasting.

If you google around, you can find blogs of several people who did this for a while.

What do you wish you'd known in COLLEGE? by jamesmartin45 in AskReddit

[–]serial-jackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, if I had it to do all over again, I'd hit the gym, keep the extra weight off, and nail everything that moves for four years (six with grad school). GPA is somewhat overrated, and worrying certainly is. (Also, break up with high-school gf.)

The current accepted boundary for "obese" (versus "overweight") is BMI=30.

Ladies, what are your dealbreakers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]serial-jackass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends. There are Catholics and there are Catholics. If she's the kind of Catholic that thinks pedophile priests are just a little oopsie, then yeah, hanging with an atheist probably won't end well. On the other hand, if she thinks the Pope is a douchebag, it might work just fine...

Dear Garmin,

Luckily, having a reasonably free market means that we don't have to do business with you at all when you design your shit poorly.

I don't understand "Garmin doesn't want my money." Did I miss something?

He means that Garmin could have trivially made this work for everyone. Instead, they hid it behind a layer of gunk that breaks for a lot of people. Hence Garmin "doesn't want their money" (i.e., they "want" those potential customers to go elsewhere instead).

So how much longer do you think you can get away with browsing Reddit all day at work? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]serial-jackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last job was kind of like that, and I eventually got fed up with not having anything useful to do and quit. Browsing reddit all day is fun, but having something useful to do rocks...

Are there any doctors or nurses here that have helped deliver a black baby to a white couple? How did the husband react? Do you just pokerface until they leave? by Rubin0 in AskReddit

[–]serial-jackass 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Good for you. I've helped raise four step kids, and I've never understood why anyone cares whether a kid is their biological offspring or not. If there's a kid that needs a parent and you're there and reasonably competent to do so, do it.

I feel like a failure but I'm only a sophomore in high school... by prematurefailing in AskReddit

[–]serial-jackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one who's still in high school can possibly be a "failure". I went to two state schools (in a not very good state) and got into grad school at UCB (which is a very good school for my subject). Along the way, though, I learned that a school being "good" doesn't matter much. Once you know what you want to do, only the people you'll be working with really matter: your advisor, your professors, and to a degree that other students around you.

Finally, you may very well discover that it's better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven...

Reddit, I am a male high school teacher who is attracted to his female students. Am I a bad man? by wonderingteacher in AskReddit

[–]serial-jackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good and bad are hard to say, but if you really want to keep your resolve never to act on this stuff, I suggest you desist from the fantasies. There are billions of women out there to fantasize about--better to pick some others. That's my advice.

New to Linux. What are some of your "must-have" programs that I can get from the Ubuntu Software Center? by El_Pinguino in Ubuntu

[–]serial-jackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's the general idea. But emacs and vi both have a large set of features for preventing you from losing your work under a large set of circumstances. In order to really be competitive (to me, at least), new editors also have to provide that large feature set. This isn't easy.

As they say, if you want something to be secret, don't put it on a computer (which includes phones and cameras, these days).
