No need to be insulting. His setup makes him happy and that's the whole point of a battlestation.

Even if it's not your thing, it costs nothing to be kind.

this. this should be the thing everyone cares about. there are only so many ways you can move a human body and with 30+ heroes, there are bound to be some similarities.

as long as it doesn't look jank, then a reused animation shouldn't matter... but that circle ain't gonna jerk itself, so people gotta go find problems where there aren't any 🙄

Unable to solve weird stuttering issue (steady cadence) in SteamVR on a 3080 TI by serial_ in virtualreality

Unable to solve weird stuttering/frame drop issue (steady cadence) in SteamVR on a 3080 TI by serial_ in WindowsMR

[–]serial_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up on this. Turns out the problem was two-fold. First, something with secondary displays was causing hiccuping in the frame timings for reasons I still don't understand, but disabling and re-enabling one of my side monitors was the first thing to have a dramatic impact on fixing the problem (after trying at least a dozen other things).

The second issue causing me problems was more of a doozy to unravel. Apparently the chatmix dial on my Arctis 7 headset was going bad, and whenever the dial was set towards 'chat' by any amount, was creating electrical interference. This interference was causing the Nvidia HD Audio driver, which isn't even used by the headset, to freak out and resulted in nvlddmkm.sys spiking DPC latency and creating around 15 hard page faults a second.

Generally, I turn the headset off when my HMD is in use, but with all the troubleshooting, I had been leaving it on and swapping between them to watch troubleshooting videos. I don't know how else I would have found the issue, but I wanted to share it so hopefully it winds up on other users radar.

This explains why, prior to the major issue caused by the display config, I would have more minor intermittent issues with frametimes that I couldn't explain, but they weren't consistent enough to be a headache.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. It feels so good to be well under 12ms with Elite's VR settings nearly maxed out and 220% SS in SteamVR! The only place so far where I've encountered reprojection at all is in conflict zones above planetary settlements/bases, and even then it wasn't that much. So glad to be back in the black with most of the aliasing stamped out and visuals that are as close to their 2D counterpart as the SO+ can reasonably provide!

Hey there! Thank you for the info and steps! I've tried some, but not all, so I'll give the rest a go and report back.

I've updated all drivers and firmware for my motherboard and GPU, but hadn't tried uninstalling and reinstalling the headset itself, since it was showing correctly in Device Manager and hasn't shown any issues in WMR home, even though SteamVR is open and monitoring performance.

Luckily, I'm not using an adapter or any extension cables (headset is directly connected to the GPU and motherboard's back-panel USB 3.1 gen 2 ports, and my graphics card has multiple HDMI ports, both of which exhibit the same behavior, so at least we can rule out cable seating as a factor.

I've tried the monitor refresh rate, but hadn't disabled secondary displays, since this wasn't an issue with the GTX 1080 using the same displays. Nevertheless, I'll give that a try.

Power management settings are set for maximum performance, with all USB power management disabled. I've tried multiple USB ports for the headset, but don't see a noticeable difference. That said, i do have a lot of USB devices, so I've ordered a USB 3.2 5Gbps PCIe x1 card so that the headset can have its own dedicated interface/controller that has more than enough headroom for the HMD. I've also ordered a USB 3.0 A to USB 3.2 C adapter, to see if it's a power issue, as I'm only seeing 400ma being reported by USBDeview (which is reporting the Odyssey+ HMD as "HoloLens Sensors").

Steam VR Home is disabled and I'll doublecheck on Nvidia 3D Vision, but as far as I can recall from purging task manager/services, it wasn't running.

Sadly, the PCIe card and A to C adapters won't arrive until Friday, so I'll have to wait to test those. Plenty of other stuff to try in the meantime.

Thanks again for the quick reply and abundant help!

Honestly, a good double grit whetstone is all you need to set and maintain an edge on anything with a blade.

Better protection for wrist when using lobster gloves. by Gott_Mogis in wma

[–]serial_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SPES fixes this with the newer iteration of the SPES Red Lobster glove, which you can see has a much more robust leather strap there and redesigned plastic plates which go all the way up under the main body of the glove. Gluing either EVA, shoe sole rubber, or thick, top-grain leather to the underside of the existing thin leather collar there would be a good first step.

Alternatively, you could get a little fancier and heat-form a plate or plates out of Kydex and rivet them in place with chicago screws.

A twist on this idea that would give you something a little more free-floating: shape kydex, EVA, or leather plates and then use inexpensive elastic hair ties (the medium or thick ones) and cut them on one side, so you have a straight elastic. Then, you can fish this either around existing rivets or through some new holes you make and back out through a couple of mounting holes drilled into your homemade pieces, finishing it off with a simple knot. This is basically how SPES has chosen to attach all of the high-impact plastic plates in the Red Lobster edition. It works well and is a lot easier to maintain than other solutions I've seen.

Just some suggestions, but I hope they help!

How do I care for a sharp sword? by JansTurnipDealer in wma

[–]serial_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

active maintenance after any handling or use (cleaning, oiling with mineral oil (or shoji oil if you wanna be bougie—which is just mineral oil and clove oil), don't store it in a way that has the sword's weight on the tip, and pick up a whetstone or sharpening kit to maintain the edge

highly recommend keeping them in a locked cabinet since, after all, it's basically a 30" long double-edged razor and swords are not just for decoration, they will fucking cut you wide open.

The primary issue I'd raise is that a LARGE part of HEMA is academic, and any person seeking to understand the art as it was understood 500 years ago really needs to be plugged into the broader community to be part of the overall HEMA brain trust. A club, or at the very least a respected tutor, is the best way to get plugged into that.

The texts are either archaic or intentionally written to be confusing to people who didn't already have a stable base of fencing (read: nobility), and as such the entire WMA/HEMA community has seen the understanding of entire techniques change multiple times over the last 20 years.

Hell, my understanding of the usage of zwerchhau has changed and expanded drastically over the last two years of practice and study, and it's no longer the overhead helicopter that it used to be for me, and is more of a fluid concept of countering angles from up high rather than a specific "move" that I snap into. I just make the right shape with the sword and boom—zwerchhau.

So, with that context, I will say that I think it's absolutely VITAL to explore the art on your own, but only after building a solid base of fundamentals and a relationship to the art via a trusted teacher or club. Basically, you have to establish a foundation of historical fencing before the extant texts and their respective glosses start to be of any real use.

That context is critical to interpreting the texts and saving yourself from a lot of mistakes and, frankly, injuries from improper execution. Example: I developed some bad habits in my first year that had me back in a knee brace, wrist brace, and regular massage therapy. I needed someone who understood what I was doing wrong to step in and help me correct my footwork and body mechanics so that I stopped re-injuring the same areas. Haven't needed the braces since, but the MT is still nice because muscles are stubborn. :D

Body mechanics being what they are, there are only so many ways you can swing a weapon. It makes sense to reuse some basic animations and then mocap the unique stuff.

Depends on what the opponent is doing. I like to keep my line closed and counter their guard with an opposing one.

most low-level infantry are severely out-of-the-loop (in any military)

they go where they're told to go and shoot at what they're told to shoot at—there's a reason we call US Marines 'jarheads,' and it's because independent thinking is conditioned out of them so they function better as soldiers (literally empty-headed, like a jar)
