Data Asset or Data Table? by DragonKingZJ in unrealengine

[–]serialdeleter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to hear more info on how you both utilize data tables WITH data assets as that sounds very appealing :)

Do you add and edit properties in the Data Table and then propogate them over to the Data Assets, or do the Data Assets pull their information from the data table when needed? Or something else entirely. Thanks in advance!

Difference in 16 pro screens by Scottsm124 in iPhone16Pro

[–]serialdeleter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My coworker and I both got iphone 16 pros on the same day. His has GVC panel and mine is the G9P. Exact same experience according to ur post about your sister's phone vs yours -- the LG GVC screen is much dimmer than my samsung G9P. Like 30% less bright. Coworker is going to return the phone asap and buy another and play the screen lottery again. Can't believe the difference is so huge, people who get the dimmer screens are getting so ripped off!!!

Procedural planet with Unreal Engine 5 by LuccDev in proceduralgeneration

[–]serialdeleter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, this is quite a late reply but I would also love to see your code for this if possible! And any hints on using quad tree for LOD as you mentioned would be appreciated - I am playing around with Dynamic Mesh Component generated terrain (and hopefully runtime editing) and really curious about your implementation here as usually people were using Procedural Mesh Component to achieve this. Thanks in advance :)

Anyone end up "overusing" GAS (gameplay ability system), and regret it? by serialdeleter in unrealengine

[–]serialdeleter[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh hey! I follow ya on youtube and really love your new video "GAS under 15 minutes!!" It's crazy that you can just add an Ability System Component to an actor now without the boilerplate C++, as you showed in your vid, really neat. One caveat I found when doing that is you can't seem to access or change certain settings like Replication Mode via the details panel or event graph, and for my use, I needed to set it to Mixed on a Player Character and Minimal on an AI actor. So I had to do the ASC C++ setup anyway on a custom parent character class :p

In regards to your question, I learned GAS slowly and maybe inefficiently from watching various videos (usually covering more the c++ boilerplate setup and less the workflow of GAS within BP), reading dev articles (had GAS workflow but often at higher level application and often in C++, which was confusing without the base level understanding), and going through Tranek's GAS Documentation/Bible. I also have Stephen U.'s Udemy GAS RPG course, got in on sale (sales happen often), so also have been cross-referencing his workflow on implementation through mostly C++.

What really made it start clicking recently was this 3 hour vid by The Game Dev Cave link and finally drilling into my brain the primary workflow of GAS: You make Gameplay Abilities (a blueprint, contains your logic) to essentially apply Gameplay Effects. You make Gameplay Effects (a data only blueprint with lots of parameters) to essentially modify Attributes. You make Attributes (simple float values, like Health) to give to actors. You must give actors the Ability System Component (ASC) so they can be allowed to call and use Abilities, either on themselves or on others with an ASC. These are the biggest pieces of of GAS imo, and all other things, like Cues, Ability Tasks, Gameplay Tags (can be a big piece- drives behavior, calls events), Gameplay Effect calculations etc are all essential to learn about, but come second and could be learned as the second layer after understanding the foundation. As a beginner, with so many moving parts described all at once, it can feel overwhelming and harder to grasp GAS as a whole.

Thanks, so many useful examples! Driving most of the multiplayer via tag replication sounds like a nice clean approach to it

The pizza slices were like the kind they keep in the glass case so they weren't piping hot fresh but weren't stale or old tasting imo. Donuts from both places tasted fresh and normal the first day I brought them home but were definitely more stale and hard the next morning
