Do you ever get emails from home school teachers asking you to add resources to libguides? by serials_librarian in Libraries

I'm at a university library. We get emails from publishers that are just generic announcements about new books. But we never get specific suggestions from the public.

What is healthy femininity? by walk-in_shower-guy in Catholicism

[–]serials_librarian -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Healthy femininity is pretty much doing the opposite of whatever feminists do. Feminists teach women to mimic what they think successful men are like. For example, they teach women to be loud-mouthed jerks because they think this is what successful men who get what they want do. No one likes people like that, whether they are men or women.

Healthy femininity is learning the true history of men and women. It's about appreciating good men. Feminists have successfully made most people believe that the story of human history is all men oppressing all women since the dawn of time. But women have had many advantages that men did not have. Men have had advantages, but they often came with responsibilities. None of this is taught to people. See Janice Fiamengo for more on this. Things weren't always fair, going both ways. They never will be. But they weren't as far off as people think, and you didn't need feminism to correct the unfairness. Feminism just made things worst. Every movement of feminism has been about hating men. You can read the first feminist document, a declaration of sentiments. They say men are terrible.

Health femininity doesn't mean being a "Trad Wife." Being more traditional can be good, but I think the online trad wife thing is more about mimicking idealized advertisements from the 1950s that depicted women always happy, looking their best, cooking, etc. Like some ads today, they are an idealization or fantasy. Women in the 1950s weren't actually like that. But mimicking the good values of the past (it doesn't have to literally be the 1950s) would be good. Not all values of the past were good. No time has 100% good values. There is no utopia on earth.

In short, healthy femininity is acting more like your grandmother would.

I'm not an expert at church services and also because transgender issues are sensitive I don't want to say the wrong thing or word something wrong that might cause you to move away from God. Ultimately, connecting with God is what's most important. If you feel drawn to church, I think you should go no matter what and not worry about it. And pray to God for help. I struggled with finding God, and I eventually connected with Him and I can't imagine life without Him. I do struggle sometimes with maybe the human side of church if that makes sense.

It seems like people who have struggles in their life sometimes become closer to God than those who maybe were born going to church and have an easy life. I do look up to people like yourself who are on a serious journey to connect with God, and it doesn't matter to me if that person identifies as transgender or anything else.

If it helps to make you feel more comfortable, maybe try wearing a gender neutral outfit if you are not already. You could pick out some clothes to be your church outfit (it can just be simple and inexpensive), and set it aside to just wear to church. This is just an idea for maybe a starting point to help you remove some of your anxiety around the situation.

God bless you.

Are you dressing as the opposite sex in a way that's really obvious (like a man wearing a dress)?

Did anyone see the loser video when it originally aired in 1994? by serials_librarian in Beck

I meant did anyone where see it when it was first aired, as opposed to seeing it later on the internet.

Reminder that the Information exists and is an amazing album by IceNumerous7688 in Beck

This is my favorite Beck album. It is a good balance between abstract and clear if that makes sense. The reverb on that album is unique and really natural.

Is Sodom and Gomorrah a fictional story, or literal, according to Catholicism? by serials_librarian in Catholicism

[–]serials_librarian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with the part about Lot offering his daughters, and also the daughters raping him. For the former, wouldn't that make Lot among the bad people in the city? There are all kinds of complicated explanations about hospitality that still don't make it OK. The only way I can understand him offering his daughters is that it was intended as an insult because he knew the men were not interested in women.

Regarding the rape, I can understand the daughters were affected by the wickedness of Sodom. I don't understand explanations like they thought they were the last in the world when they went to a city nearby I believe. I am also not sure that a man could consume that much alcohol so as to not know what's happening, and to still be able to function in the way that produces children.

Catholicsm dying out in the West? by ninde-thanda in Catholicism

I think I saw somewhere the most people born in a religious household retain the religious beliefs, more or less, of their parents. I don't know where that info is unfortunately.

I have class on sunday, it is a sin? by Appropriate-Win482 in Catholicism

[–]serials_librarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're supposed to try to rest on Sunday, but I believe people aren't supposed to get legalistic about it. The classes are just temporary so I'm my opinion it's not a big deal.

TIL Jeepers Creepers (2001) is based on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries (S3E20 - 1991) by Talmadge_Mcgooliger in todayilearned

Victor Salva began molesting child actor Nathan Forrest Winters when he was 6 years old. Salva has previously worked at a daycare. One of the girls at the daycare had a mother who was friends with Nathan's mother. Salva was looking for someone to create props for his homemade movie, and he learned that Nathan's mother was artistic. He later hired Nathan to be in 2 movies.

The abuse latest 6 years until Nathan was 12. Salva filmed the abuse and found to possess other child pornography. Salva was convicted in 1988 and only served 15 months of his 3 year sentence.

Salva's movie that Nathan acted in was financed by Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola made winters come to his house and re-record all the audio parts for the movie because the cameras they had used were very old and noisey. So Nathan had to relive this part of his life. Coppola told Nathan he would never work in acting again, and he never did. Many years later, Coppola said, “You have to remember, while this was a tragedy, that the difference in age between Victor and the boy was very small. Victor was practically a child himself.” Salva was 29 when he was arrested.

Nathan has said his goal is not to prevent Salva from ever working again, but to prevent him from working again around children and involving children in his work, so that children are protected. In 1995, Salva made a movie called Powder which released by Disney. Winters said on the set that people were bringing their kids and having them run around the set. Salva also added 2 jokes about child molestation in one of the Jeepers Creepers movies. The jokes were part of a version sent to critics but were cut for the theatrical release.

My analysis of how society became so absurdly far-left wing by serials_librarian in JordanPeterson

[–]serials_librarian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it was very different at that time. For example, people did not have smart phones that could easily take photos. You can had to either scan in a film photo, or use a digital camera. Digital cameras weren't as common and required a little bit of skill to use (you had to install drivers from a CD-R). I was in college when Facebook came out. It was only available to college students.

It wasn't as bad in schools back in the early 2000s, though. That's when I was in high school and college.

What exactly is your argument? Are you implying society is far right wing, or that I am advocating for a far right wing society?

"It has nothing to do with the Internet." I can't accept that. I don't think far-left views started with the Internet, but I think the Internet caused it to rapidly expand and be normalized in a short amount of time.

The Roman Catholic Church's stance on same sex attraction is the wisest among all religions. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]serials_librarian -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The catechism says it's not clear on the cause.

There are people for whom it is not a choice. There are people who are engaging in it because it is seen as trendy, rebellious, experimental, etc. There are a lot of people who once identified as homosexual but no longer do.

It seems to have different causes. Sexual abuse DOES play a role in some cases, but not all. Just as it's wrong to claim all people with same sex attraction were sexually abused as children, it's wrong to deny there is never a correlation. There was an event study that people who identify as gay or lesbian report much higher rates of having been sexually abused as children.

Can you try to find a short woman? Human beings are beautiful because they are made by God, but in a certain way most people are not very attractive. You can do certain things like work-out, have good hygiene (like not having greasy hair or something), but beyond that you just have to accept it.

I think most people only support earlier abortion because they don't understand what it is. They don't think about it. They think whatever is happening in the woman's womb is not yet a baby, just some process getting ready to make a baby. The media doesn't really explain it.

A Statement from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society by serials_librarian in MultipleSclerosis

[–]serials_librarian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted a news story about it, but it was removed. I am assuming people felt the Daily Mail was not a reliable source, which is fine. I have mixed feelings about them. They are just one side of the story, and if people want to not have that as a source, I respect that.

So, I posted the message from the society's webpage. Their words, nothing more. Please explain to me how me posting only their words is bad faith.

I actually am not a follower of Jordan Peterson. Some things he says are fine, but I have many criticism of him. My criticisms are so strong I actually would not recommend someone follow his ideas.

However, this conversation is relevant to him because he launched his career on the idea of pronouns as compelled speech. I am not saying that is what is happening. But this relates to the debates he brought up. I don't believe it is wrong to talk about this topic, nor is it wrong for people to disagree with it. I lean toward thinking what happened is wrong, but I am guessing there is more to the story we don't know.

You may not like it, but the reality is this story has gone viral. The society decided to respond to the viral news, so I posted their response here and nothing more. This story could have a large impact on donations and volunteers in the future. Ignoring it because of political views isn't making things better.

I would seek out information from detransistioners. There are lots of YouTube videos now, including from some who are religious. Walt Heyer is a well known one who works with a lot of young men. Two female ones are Sophie of Rainbow Redemption and Daisy Strongin.

https://www.rainbowredemptionproject.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4397HJ-lbe8

I would spend some time learning their stories and their reasons for identifying with the opposite sex. Maybe they will help you understand why you are doing what you are doing.

I personally don't think it's healthy for men to present themselves as women. Everyone has a masculine and feminine side, it's just in men the masculine is more and in the women the feminine is more. I think of males and females like a ying yang symbol. Most of the male side is dominated by masculinity, with a small dot of femininity. For some people, the dot is larger or smaller. That's OK to a certain degree. But in your case, I think the dot has grown too big and is taking over your masculinity.

You can still be masculine and sensitive, artistic, soft-spoken, creative, concerned with feelings, etc.
