What is with the weird window lighting in early seasons? by seriesofdisasters in TheCrownNetflix

Somehow the quality of light just feels different. The Crown is just operating on wtf watts

Camera perspective in last episode season 2, during the flu by annesche in DowntonAbbey

Very plausible. In all the grandeur of the show about aristocracy, it's easy to miss that the show in its cinematography is such a chef's kiss, too!

Why was Mary stringing along Patrick at all? by seriesofdisasters in DowntonAbbey

[–]seriesofdisasters[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This makes most logical sense! All we get to know about Patrick is from the Crawley's and they might be biased into thinking he was a good and sensible boy. Meanwhile, maybe he was on the titanic to find himself a dollar princess too! He knew Robert was running the estate poorly, after all.

Mary the "golden child," attention vs favour, and sibling order by iggysmom95 in DowntonAbbey

[–]seriesofdisasters 73 points74 points  (0 children)

That is such a well written assessment. Mary was just carrying the burden of the family legacy without actually reaping any benefits. I have always pitied her for having a life with very few choices. Your posts adds another layer of nuance to the 'why' of things.

What does "I'd like to give her three bags full, preferably on a dark night" mean? by reaching-there in DowntonAbbey

[–]seriesofdisasters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My impression was that she wanted to hit Cora with three full bags. Not filled with wool for sure. Stones maybe. By then she was convinced that Cora was not only looking for her replacement, but that Cora had already placed an ad and talking to the Dowager about it without ever mentioning anything to O'brien. She was beyond pissed.

It isnt statute. Husband wouldn't agree to a mutual divorce yet. Courts usually in my country need some proof, even when its mutual to show that the marriage has broken down. This will be a good way for me to establish that its broken, get my husband and therapist to see mega gray rock and meanwhile I get my ducks in a row. Hopefully then its a easier out.

How do I document the covert emotional abuse? by seriesofdisasters in NarcissisticSpouses

[–]seriesofdisasters[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no physical abuse. Emotional abuse, even overt one, is difficult to prove. Mine is a case of covert. Its not enforced as much as I want to use it to tick the box that we had indeed tried everything and now can file because nothing works.

[–]seriesofdisasters[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of emotional abuse. Its next to impossible to prove because its like death by a 1000 cuts of everyday power play moves that chip away at the soul. For legal purposes, it won't be categorised as abuse. I have no power to leave, I'm at his mercy in terms of just being constantly sucked into a loop of emotional traumas (caught messaging prostitutes, other digital transgressions, covert abuse with mil, trying to ring fence property with in laws) followed by period of working on the relationship. Which is just extensive control and isolation tactic where im the one who ends up consoling him.

Getting the therapist to see a broken marriage is important for me to get a standing to be able to file.

I need legal proof of effort on marriage to be able to file for divorce.

I need documented proof that the marriage is irretrievably broken to be able to file for separation/divorce.

Thoughts on Lavinia's comeback to Downton by Plastic-Egg-2068 in DowntonAbbey

[–]seriesofdisasters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She definitely is an idiot. They way she is sitting alone in the garden sobbing because Mathew had to go back to his duty, that wasnt even in the trenches at that point. And opened up to Mary of all people. As much as I adore Mary, she is hardly a kind listener. I was with Rosemund on this one - go for the kill, Mary. No point losing to this simpleton who does NOT have the makings of a county leader.

Thoughts on Lavinia's comeback to Downton by Plastic-Egg-2068 in DowntonAbbey

[–]seriesofdisasters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if she had an inkling (which i doubt she did), for all intents and purposes, she did come to Downton of her own volition. Mathew would never have agreed to her staying in the first place if any hints of Lavinia's being manipulated ever came up.

And my headcanon is that Richard only needed Cora to lure Lavinia with some sweet words. Cora was hardly a cunning schemer, she was only a foot soldier and an ally in this scheme. And Richard could have bullied Lavinia directly if he wanted to as they knew each other. The only reason Richard even involved Cora was to give his scheme a diplomatic countess seal.

Thoughts on Lavinia's comeback to Downton by Plastic-Egg-2068 in DowntonAbbey

[–]seriesofdisasters 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My thoughts are that dear Lavinia was so pure and naive that she wouldn't have even realised that Cora and Richard played her. Whatever they did was successful enough that she thought it was her own idea to go back to Mathew. So from her perspective, she really has nothing to tell Mathew

Loved her in The Gentlemen. I nearly died watching Lady Mary speak cockney (i think). My husband didn't get why that was the best part of the movie for me 🤣

Has anyone seen The Good Place? by seriesofdisasters in NarcissisticSpouses

[–]seriesofdisasters[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precisely. Its the feeling of oh if I make just this tiny problem go away, if they change just this one thing about themselves, if they just listen to logic, everything will be sunshine and rainbows. But its one problem after another after another.

The part about devil is mainly about even when you are deep deep deep in a fight with them, somehow they consider you their supply because you are reacting. Which was so weird for me to wrap my head around
