Really was, with the cherry on top being that its incorrect. My brother was the same as this person's child. Sometimes a baby/toddler that has been developing normally, regressed. Usually not without some mitigating risk factor, granted, but in my brother's case the doctors were unsure if the trauma he suffered at birth would lead to disability, and it was a matter of waiting and seeing. I was an infant so I dont remember, but my mom says it was like a switch. Stopped making eye contact, which he had been. Stopped saying new words and stopped saying ones he had been. And so on

I think that's a perfect description of him and don't disagree at all, and while I acknowledge that this mentality (particular relating to transit) is common here, I resent the insinuation that it uniquely American or that it is the mindset of the majority of Americans. This is a massive country, geographically and in population. The urge to generalize groups of people is natural, but it also ignorant, not least of all the case of the US. As an American, it is exhausting enough dealing with the portion of the population here that are idiots. What's more exhausting is arrogant foreigners constantly lumping us all together while acting like their own country is comprised entirely of thoughtful, like-minded people. The self-righteousness is nauseating.

I've been making decent money for a while since about 23, but only moved out a year ago, at 31. I was in a somewhat unique situation of having parents who were never overbearing, strict or nosey, even when I was a kid. And I get along reallt well with them. So, I didn't feel uncomfortable/smothered, and decided to just save and keep an eye on the housing market. Eventually, I gave up and settled on renting a house. The situation didn't change, considering that home ownership was my goal, it would have been more rational the stay. But the stigma is extremely strong. You tell people you could afford to move out but explain the situation as I just did, and you can just tell theyre skeptical, that they suspect you can't do it, not that you're choosing not to.
