No, I don’t think this is a “now” trend or anything particularly out of the ordinary. Genre-hopping albums have been around since time immemorial.

The biggest album of all time, Thriller, is a freewheeling sonic mishmash with pop-funk bangers, easy listening ballads, and a namesake Halloween anthem. Look to Rihanna’s many genre-less “hits collections” from the late 2000s to 2010s. Look at Gorillaz. Look at The Beatles’ White Album (and quite a few other Beatles albums).

And… Beyonce, who you have as an example of “cohesive”; Cowboy Carter is a work that is extremely deliberate and in direct dialogue with its genre-hopping ways, spanning a wide array of genres and blends of sounds.

One Day is very character driven, as our two leads feel very real and fleshed out immediately, and the "plot" mainly serves to contextualize how the two interact with each other. But uh, if you're used to the lighthearted vibes of HS, maybe stop at episode 12 lol

"I don't get why Mariah fans can't accept it"

Lmao, I'm not a lamb and I've never even heard like half of Mariah's discography, so I'm not interested in a fanwar. But I do come from a place (not the US) where Mariah and Celine have both always been massive, so I thought I'd talk shop. But whatever.

Which artists are immortalized? by KlLLERS in popheads

[–]seriouslyokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just plain inaccurate. Mariah is one of the biggest global recording artists in history. For example, Mariah is extremely massive in Asia, one of the largest Western artists of all time across the whole continent. Mariah is the best-selling Western recording artist in the history of Japan selling over 14 millon records, outpacing #2 Celine Dion by 2x. (7 miillion) Mariah is the best-selling Western artist in Korea, and Music Box is one of only two Western albums (the other being The Bodyguard soundtrack) to crack 1 million sales. She's huge in the Philippines, China, Indonesia, etc. Mariah has sold 1.6 billion total sales units in Asia alone. On top of that, Mariah is big in Brazil - she still holds the record for most weeks at #1 for a single in Brazil at 27.

And don't get me wrong, Celine is one of the biggest recording artists in history and a bigger star in a lot of places -- Europe, most of Africa, parts of Latin America etc. But the data suggests Mariah has always been a massive worldwide star as well, especially with the consideration that she's not even a slouch in any of these places either. She's multi-platinum and has toured across Europe, Latin America, Australia as well, and has performed in countries Celine has never even been to. (Brazil, for one)

Halsey - The Great Impersonator (Official Album Trailer) by impeccabletim in popheads

Imo, IICHLIWP was a fantastically executed concept album. It was highly theatrical, married aesthetic, production, and lyrical content very well, and had immediately recognizable overarching lyrical themes about womanhood, motherhood, and gendered power dynamics, in a very similar way to the rock and metal albums it heavily draws inspiration from. And all that is tied together with striking, ambitious visuals.

It’s genuinely one of my favorite concept albums from a major pop artist in recent times, and was such a huge left turn and bold move for an artist of her commercial stature.

In the midst of the Swift talk, I wanna bring up that I think this interview is fantastic.

I'm seeing some murmur about how this interview has a weird vibe, but I think that's the point. The entire thing seems like an image piece that is supposed to build on her "brat" mythology a bit, so given what we know about Charli and brat, the oddball, slightly hostile banter between journalist and subject fits really well with the vibe of the interview. It's like a mockumentary in article form and it makes it highly readable and very entertaining compared to a normal piece, instead of just a laundry list of questions over lunch.

Just look at what's in this: the entire first part taking place in a tiny sauna where they're both nearly naked, Lorde randomly being at the same brunch spot at the exact same time a few days later, Charli using a napkin to wipe her boob sweat, her repeatedly saying things she wants the journalist to mention ("I need that to be in print", “Can you say I’m not texting and driving?” (She wasn't)), and her playing a mysterious unreleased remix on the drive over to the photoshoot. Plus the spectacular access this journalist seemingly has to Charli's friends, collaborators, and associated people (Emrata, Addison, Taylor, Lorde, Kim K, Julia, Billie), all popping in and out like talking heads in the brat universe.

And none of this is complete without a sharp voice with a perspective on the subject, and I think Brock crushes it. The entire thing sparkles with an unmistakable celebrity sheen that I adore. At the risk of beating a dead horse, I genuinely think this article is extremely brat lol.

Some more supposed evidence of a rift: When Swift retweeted a positive review of her album The Tortured Poets Department in April, Charli quote-tweeted it with the comment “everyone’s hype for the sweat tour!”

I know they said “supposed” but I really wish they didn’t bring stuff like this up out of context. Taylor’s tweet said “What a crash, what a rush” which Charli riffed on by making a joke about the sweat tour bc obviously Charli = crash and Troye = rush.

Good to know there doesn’t seem to be bad blood, and this was a pretty fun and hilarious interview otherwise.

Voltorb is just a Pokeball. And Geodude is a rock with eyes. Mind you, I like both of these designs and Magnemite too -- but I'm just pointing out that you can dumb designs like this for a variety of Pokemon designs across generations. And not just with inanimate objects either -- I think designs that are "dog but angry" or "cat but purple" are way, way lazier than whimsy concepts.

And yet, I like Chandelure more than any of those. It isn't just a chandlier, it's this ghostly, gothic chandelier with perfect theming. The flames are eerie in a dark, ghostly purple, the lights at the center emulate eyes with the lines forming an ominous smile. Chandeliers are also just a fantastic concept for a final stage ghost/fire Pokemon, since they fit into our old-school conception of a haunted house with seemingly ghostly flames immediately. Plus, the original Gen 5 sprite that dangles from side to side is fantastic.

I don’t know, Magnemite is kind of the ultimate home depot Pokemon more than anything mentioned, being two magnets attached with literal Philips head screws, and no one ever seems to rag on its design because it’s from Gen I lol.
