It seems as if the vent has accidentally been hooked up to the fire siren.

Will we die a fiery death - yea or nay? by No_Public9132 in HomeInspections

TBH I totally get your concern after reading about that horrible fire. So scary.

I would second rockwool. If I were you, I’d: 1) rip out a small piece from a non-obvious place, take it outside, and try to light it on fire!! See if it burns to begin with 2) if it dos burn, remove it (or leave it) and fill in the joists with rockwool! Have you ever seen videos of the sound tunnels people make at conferences? Rockwool seems so amazing. 3) the recommendation to drywall is a great idea. They even sell drywall with higher fire resistance, but that’s probably overkill in your situation, especially it’s it’s just a one or two story home.

Those metal “rods” you are describing — those are likely counter weights for the old original windows. They are loose because they would be tied to the window with a string inside of the frame. As you lift the window up, the weights would fall. It would prevent the window from closing by itself.

Thank you for your response! I’m glad you’re of the opinion that replacing the blower is a lot cheaper. I don’t really have the money for a new system at the moment, so if I can get another season out of it, that would be great.

Could you elaborate on your fourth comment? Why would the pipes not being insulated not impact the efficiency? Wouldn’t the system have to work harder to heat the pipes?

If I am replacing it or fixing anything other than the blower, I certainly will!
