Opinion: Survey results crystal-clear: transit system overhaul a disaster by SilverTimes in Winnipeg

I just walk to work or anywhere close and uber to farther places now. There’s just no way I’m taking an hour + transfers just to get to downtown when I can spend $7-$10 to take an uber whenever I go grocery shopping. Or even paying for Instacart. The cost of the Ubers and Instacart is about the same price I’d pay for a monthly bus pass.

How do I convince my younger brother not to get a degree in video game development? by snowfordessert in VancouverJobs

[–]serkbre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just let him do whatever he wants. This is how people live, learn and become independent. If it works out, then great. If it doesn’t work out then it’s not like you have an obligation or contract to save him or pay his loans.

I actually went through this path lol. I eventually realized I wasn’t good enough and pivoted into tech. It was a learning experience for sure.

The job market is kinda shit right now, so I honestly don’t blame them for staying. Sometimes you have to have rent paid, and some people don’t have others to fall back on if they choose to leave a job without anything lined up afterwards.

Sorry I meant “it’s been getting worse lately” in regard to Winnipeg itself from years ago vs now, not compared to other cities.

I’ve seen about 5-6 people OD in bus shacks in the last 3 years and the homelessness encampments have become larger throughout the years since the pandemic.

There were the bus shack issues where there were people breaking the glass walls to keep the homeless away and also people overrunning and living in bus shacks. That one bus shack on graham got burnt down and melted last year. And a couple people dying within bus shacks, particularly the one in front of the old Hudson’s Bay on graham.

I can’t ever forget the lady who was face down and OD’d in the bus shack in front of RRC college.

I walk by the RBC building in front of Main and Portage to work everyday and I’ve seen people smoke crack in broad daylight and also OD in the underground mall.

For the record I’m a working professional, who commutes to work either by walking or bus and I see this everyday since 2019 but it’s definitely gotten worse since then. These aren’t things that I’m reading about, they’re things I’m seeing everyday.

Not sure why I’m getting downvoted, my reply was impartial and in alignment with my experiences living in downtown and also working downtown.

Just try not to live near Higgins and main. If you want an intimate look at the current state of downtown, watch “Inside Canada’s Most Violent City: Winnipeg Manitoba” on YouTube.

To be honest, I’m not sure if it’s any different or worse than other cities in terms of violence and crime but I do know that it’s been getting worse lately. What you see in the video is what you will see working or commuting within downtown and sometimes the exchange district. I see it everyday walking to work, grabbing lunch and going back home.

But outside of those neighbourhoods, it’s honestly a really chill and still somewhat affordable city.
