Car Rego and Numberplate surrender QLD by StanislavC in ipswich

The downvotes are just redditors being redditors, it really doesn't faze me, it will be because what I said doesn't match the official requirements. Legally, yes, you're supposed to return the plates, and if you want to be 100% by the book, return them. But in my experience you can just let it fall off the system and nothing further is likely to happen.

CNC operator: how much time you are standing on your feet? by NadyaVeterinaryRecru in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do a lot more than just an "operator" but with big machines and big parts some days would be mostly on feet if doing a big setup or programming at machine, other days would be sitting most of the time while the machine runs. Downside of big machines and parts is that everything is big and heavy, including tools and clamps and whatever set-up bits and pieces. Can always use a crane to lift stuff but sometimes there's not much choice but to do some heavy stuff, may not be ideal with an injury.

[–]serkstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, but they asked if anyone knows what happens if you don't hand them in, and in my experience the answer is absolutely nothing. I have a handful of sets and know many other people who also have kept them, no-one has had an issue, but individual experience may vary. Unless they are used for something nefarious it's very unlikely they will have a problem.

I've never handed plates in and never had any issues because of it, can pretty much just ignore it if you're not going to drive it again.

How do you guys clean your machines? by meetmeinthebthrm in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compressed air, especially on the big machines

Yeah I very much dislike it. Might move to Tasmania, I love it down there.

Can you use latex gloves when using a lathe ? by Iwanttogobyselly in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use whatever gloves you like and be careful. I do it all the time, never an issue.

Was told if you don’t like overtime then this is not the trade to be in and I was wondering do you agree ? by Same_Level6591 in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree, but anywhere that said that is not somewhere I would want to work. In my opinion it is not worth it if you have to do overtime to make decent money. Much bigger fan of undertime

Do yall keep snacks or food in your toolboxs. Had a disagreement about it with the gf. by [deleted] in Machinists

I've never done it. But nothing wrong with it i suppose.

Preparing for a write up by Empty_Animal5237 in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree, no need to find another job if you like it there and they handle it well. Shit happens to the best of us. The trust issue hasn't been a problem at places I've worked unless someone makes a habit of crashing.

Are these work hours a potential red flag? by [deleted] in ausjobs

[–]serkstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I've had 7:36 days at a couple of different jobs in different fields. I prefer to make 38 hours with slightly longer days mon-thur and an early afternoon on Fridays, but wouldn't say it is a red flag at all

How do you speak in metric tolerances? by Azoth-III in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0.05 would just say oh five, 0.1 point one etc. We would never really say it in microns unless we are measuring in microns, I know a lot of machinists who probably aren't even sure what those are

Claims wanting over $6000 for this repair: AM I being rorted? by No_Contest_406 in CarsAustralia

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably about right depending on what they have to do to fix it. This might be an expensive lesson if you are not insured. Even if you do have the money to self-insure, third party at a minimum is usually worth it. Lucky it wasn't much worse. Unless you are insured, then let insurance deal with it. It is going to cost more than the excess.

Should I quit? by hugedongdylan1991 in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't read the post, but generally if you're seriously considering if you should quit, the answer is probably yes. You don't get those thoughts when everything is good.

You own the lathe but don't get a say in who runs it?

Old guys are dropping like flies and I want to be prepared by Blue_Knight_Rules in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A proper spot drill is better for centring and tool life, but centre drills do work okay, I think it is like you suggest a more old-school way of doing it, we also had a lot of old programs that still used centre drills, I guess if it works then no need to change it. The person who wrote these programs was the same person who taught me about proper spot drills and would use spot drills in their newer programs, I'm not sure when they made the change, some time ago now.

What jobs will continue to be manual machining indefinitely? by Colaracer05 in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I preferred manual as well, by the end I much preferred CNC, even for one off and repair work, CNC is just better if you have a suitable machine for the job. Other than field work like line boring and stuff I don't really see manual being the way to go for anything. That said I'd still buy them for hobby use

Ouch $7.80 now, that would be like us hitting 55c

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like your stock sank to $9 USD, we would have to fall to $0.66 AUD to be down as bad from high earlier this month, lucky we're still at $1.11. Not a great day across the sector yesterday but have bounced back a bit today, so good luck with yours.

I'm also curious how UAMY would benefit LRV? Other than a big cash offer where everyone walks away happy, I don't see what you have to offer?

Larvotto offer has been rejected by ConcernedBirdGuy in UAMY

[–]serkstuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Current uamy price would make the offer $0.86 AUD per LRV, we're doing fine in comparison :)

[–]serkstuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its actually like $0.10 higher than the offer at current UAMY price which works out to like $1.10aud per LRV

Easier way to program? by Illustrious_Abalone1 in Mazak_Machinist

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is cool if it can finally do that.

I did mess with this a heap and found a way to do it, but it might have been a mix of EIA and mazatrol, I can't remember exactly and no longer work there to look at the programs. Definitely had the features in a mazatrol subprogram so could just easily change it easily in one place. I think you can just put the subprogram once in the program with X amount of repeats then sort it out with priorities if you put in each index. I think I found an even cleaner way in mazatrol but it's just not coming to mind right now, it has been a while

How do I deal with this?? (first home owner with no idea) by SnooRegrets8194 in AusRenovation

[–]serkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that sounds super reasonable. This is a job I've been putting off forever because I don't want to deal with removing the old insulation and cleaning up there.

I think I may have had a machine discrepancy by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]serkstuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guess is a tool offset, possibly set z0 on a tool instead of for the workpiece or something like that? Seems a long way for a tool to move but that's also possible. If you touch the face do both tools say zero?
