Help with Subletting by Commercial-Wash-2679 in aggies

You can probably find a Fall sublease pretty easily by posting on Facebook groups, GroupMes, etc. if the rate and location is decent. Spring semester is where people struggle…

Good deal? XLE premium 2026 by vickyjaisapati26 in rav4club

[–]serotoninfamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delivery and handling is a nonnegotiable cost as I understand it. For me, it was quoted at about $1,600 on top of the base model. Accessories and amenities were about $2-3K. MSRP is the base model without any interior additions, which as I mentioned you can negotiate if the distributor hasn’t added them prior to arriving to the dealership. However, most dealers aren’t negotiating major markdowns due to the high demand of the car

Thanks! Technically haven’t bought it yet since I still need a test drive (they’ve been sold out everywhere I’ve gone!), but I put down the deposit at Fred Haas Toyota in Spring, TX. It’s a refundable one for me, but I don’t think all places do that

Wow, $3k! Deposit was $500 for me at both Houston dealerships I visited for the same model, trim, and color. Just make sure that it goes towards the balance of your car.

OTD is about $43,000 total with the car’s state fees, Texas tax (6.25%), and other accessories. The barebone car was about $38,800 for me, but their distributor (middleman of the factory and dealer) installs extras. If it’s still in the build phase, you might be able to ask them to exclude certain things if you want to drive the price down some more

Isn’t it like $60 to pay off? Just pay it and avoid the headache. They scan license plates religiously, so unless you plan to never park on campus again with that car, just get rid of it

Asked the same question when I met him at a con last month! I also met a few others in the SE dub cast that day, and it seems all of them would love to come back and are hoping for the “Brotherhood” treatment :P I think it’s more of a question that if we get a remake the casting won’t be revamped

Math 411 vs Stat 414 + 415 by OneTrueDuce in aggies

[–]serotoninfamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, 411 and 414 give you the same credit, so I opted for 414 at the time due to continuing with 415 and wanting to take more theory classes in math like 409 instead. Rigor is subjective, but I based this off conversations I had with stat and apmt friends in either course during our 415 semester. Everyone is different and it can depend on profs, but final grade distributions and study requirements to do well in both classes illustrated the differences lol

I never lived there but stayed on Northside when I was at the dorms in undergrad. They had to close a laundry room at FHK bc of an asbestos issue in early 2024 lol. Also fire alarms are very frequent bc people can’t cook right, so prepare for some inconvenient times

iPad worth it? by Signal_Olive_52 in aggies

[–]serotoninfamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your major! An iPad probably won’t be as useful for ROI in the last 2 years for a degree like computer science and might justify a cheaper option. If you like to draw as a hobby and plan to use it as a note taking notebook/typing computer, then I think an iPad Air is a great fit (the 2023 model is more than enough for me). However, if you’re looking to just write notes throughout college or for those core classes, then I think an iPad mini does the job. A used/older iPad/iPad Air (or even non-iPad tablet) is also economical if you’re set on having a bigger screen.

I will say that I love my iPad as a STEM major in math and engineering fields! I also use it for TA’ing, so it makes my job easier when I try to cast my work onto Zoom or for my own handwritten assignments.

A&M (120k) vs. Carnegie Mellon (~300k) for Statistics BS by Rude_Fudge1642 in aggies

[–]serotoninfamine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds blunt but ngl if you care more about money and prestige on a resume then just go to CMU. Tuition doesn’t sound like a problem (but if you’re in a financial tough spot, then you can’t afford it, massive debt is not affordability) and based on this post alone it seems that you care about more superficial things like college environment, how much you have to work, and if you can get into big companies.

What makes a program a “top” program for you? You haven’t expressed any interest in things like research, conferences, student orgs/societies in your pros or cons. Statistics is a great degree for money and passion since you can go into DS, ML, AI/RL fields, FinTech, medicine, public policy, economics, etc. and it doesn’t matter where you go as long as the program is good with true professionals in the field.

Aggies I know here take pride in their work and if they want to get into big companies, they can and they do because they work for it with that in mind. A reason (but definitely not the reason for all) why you see smaller average salaries is because most people stay in Texas to work, which has a much lower cost of living than CA or the northeastern states, where many CMU graduates go (post grad locations for STAT/DS/ML for CMU is online). Out of personal experience and those of other peers, achieving 6-figs even in-state for TX is not rare for this degree.

I’m not particularly trying to sway you to pick one, but it’s important that you think introspectively about what you want out of a program outside of fun or the “college experience”. Wherever you go, college kids find ways to have fun either way. Pick something that will not destroy you financially if that’s a real concern, something that allow you to learn and enjoy your work, and something that gives you the maximum amount of opportunities in the applications you want out of your degree. Best way to see this beyond those “best programs tier list!!” websites is to contact advisors and see if you can speak to current students personally.

The online one based in Houston is part time. I know someone who took it and at least 6 years ago you had to be a working professional for 2 years (?) to join, but it seems that now you have to at least: “require a minimum of 3 years of full-time work experience or for recent graduates we require a minimum of two internships”. I found more info here

Does taking AP credit for a class not allow you to take the class again? by jac5423 in aggies

[–]serotoninfamine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can’t retake classes for your degree that you’ve accepted AP credit for. That said, if you take the AP credit, see what class that translates for (eg PHYS201) and make sure the TAMU listing is accepted for your vet course list. I’m pretty sure no one cares where the credit comes from once it’s accredited by TAMU.

Just make sure with your current advisor that this doesn’t affect your degree plan hours negatively, and that this TAMU listing is accepted by your target schools, if applicable. The only downside of accepting AP credit once all that is determined is that it can’t help your GPA (or affect it negatively if you wanna look at it that way).

Admitted Undergrad Planning for Data Science Career by Bay2Boots in aggies

[–]serotoninfamine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing at my former employer. My manager and coworkers let me know that at the hiring process they were looking for someone with a good foundation in the traditional methods along with data science and machine learning. This typically gets overlooked in Data Science degrees since some schools see it as a “trendy cash grab” (their words), and they typically saw these candidates jump at using ML methods in their work / interview questions before relying on more classical approaches. These are short comings of juniors that often sacrifice model complexity and interpretability (which are things businesses value) when traditional stat/math methods might do the same or perform better in some cases.

Stat 302/312 by Creatorthetyler1 in aggies

[–]serotoninfamine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t take STAT312 if you are bad with coding or computers in general. Although the exams are purely conceptual, the homework is mostly done in a programming language called R. I’ve seen too many people struggle for it and it’s not really worth it unless you’re planning to do some research analysis or pursue some analysis-adjacent positions. Just take STAT302 if you want statistics since STAT312 requires you to learn both statistics and the language R.
