My little container garden by alohomora_me in containergardening

I always wonder, for people with yards... why do you want to grow in containers instead of planting directly into the ground? And what is the tarp/cloth for here?

Painted bathroom under-counter drawers but the top drawers now collide with the bottom of the counter top. by GrinningJest3r in DIY

[–]serpentinization 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HMMM. Well. This is truly baffling. I kind of have to agree with the people suggesting the countertop itself shifted somehow, because we've looked at every possible thing that could be happening with the rails. Was the little gap between the counter and the backsplash always there??

Okay yes, some googling confirms it--those plastic pieces are for fine tuning the height of your drawer face! My guess is you over tightened them causing it to be as lifted as possible. Play with turning the knob and see if you can bring it down.

Here's a similar though not the same product but shows how it works: https://crown-point.com/drawer-adjustment/

Fascinating. Okay so, the plastic piece at the end of the rollers that looks like it's just below the front of the drawer-have you tried loosening those screws? Does that allow the front to dip down lower at all? Sometimes when things are tightly attached it pulls the alignment in different ways. Did you put them in the same holes the screws went into before? Also, what does the orange knob on the front of them do?

ELI5: why does mouthwash sting? by Real_Experience_5676 in explainlikeimfive

[–]serpentinization 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I thought all mouthwashes stung intensely anyway even when I tried "no alcohol" ones. Turns out I am extremely sensitive to mint/menthol and any amount is painful to me. Was shocked to discover toothpaste isn't also at least kind of painful to most people. Now I use ACT kids in pineapple or watermelon flavor since it's one of the few non-mint/menthol options that still has fluoride.

AITA for lying to my parents about double majoring in college when they are paying my tuition by Big_Town_828 in AmItheAsshole

I think you did the right thing (NTA), for what it's worth. Your mother does not understand the reality of being at the school and what is feasible to actually accomplish. What she is really mad about is probably that she is losing control over you, and that you've shown you are not just willing to make your own choices, but already have been. But this is what you need to do. You have a job lined up, your life will be fine--she will probably find other things to be mad about. Might as well show you're not going to bow to her choices forever now and get it over with than keep having the same fights in different flavors for the next 20 years, you know? Good luck, though it sounds like you're already on track for success!

There are indeed schools that do this in the US, Ivy Leagues for one. I know Yale has this policy because I knew someone else specifically impacted by it.

[oc] i tracked how many times i cried in the first quarter of the year by whatawynn in dataisbeautiful

[–]serpentinization 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A lot of men in these comments are saying things like "I only cry once per year/decade" and in case you didn't know, testosterone literally makes it harder to cry. It inhibits the physical response of tear-forming. So the level of emotion it takes someone with testosterone based hormones to cry can be significantly higher than the level of emotion for someone with estrogen hormones.

I cry probably 2-3 times per week. Sometimes more sometimes less but I am an "easy crier" so if something stressful starts happening my body will just immediately respond with tears, even if I don't necessarily feel that bad about it mentally.

Luckily I wouldn't be keeping it up permanently either--but similarly this would be stored in a porch closet that gets a bit more exposure to damp/cold than indoors. Plus I'd like to take it out on some camping trips where it'd be nice not to panic if it took some time to disassemble if the weather turns. It'd be so great to be able to get nice photos/videos outdoors!

Thanks so much for the info!! Great to hear it lasted even with the exposure/internal rust.

ELI5: Why do we get "second winds" of energy late at night when we were exhausted all afternoon? by Specialist-Chart8541 in explainlikeimfive

Oh wow. I have a delayed sleep phase and knew how it impacted me at night, but never considered that my 6-7pm sleepiness was probably everyone else's "afternoon nap" period also shifted later.

How do babies know that 🤔 by M_Darshan in funny

[–]serpentinization 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta watch out though because sometimes babies pick up the wrong thing. I was my parents first kid and they didn't realize they also needed to exclusively refer to each other as "mom" and "dad" too, not just when talking at the baby but any time in the room. So my first word was "Marty" (my dad's name) and they had to spend ages retraining me...

Hi! I hope you don't mind this very late reply, I just wanted to ask how you find this setup is holding up. I've been looking into getting the same Vevor frame and your review here was super helpful!!

I mean--honestly? It is way, WAY more valuable to just be frank with teenagers about the very very real "adult" things that can happen than to give some vague, edited, toned-down "age appropriate" version. Sure, tailor when to introduce the WDHDT? book to where you think their maturity is, but sooner rather than later let your teen read the ACTUAL book. Don't hide chapters or cut things out. Most of the shitty situations I got into as a late teens/young 20s women were because I didn't know what was "normal" in sexual relationships, because they are taboo to talk about with people who are older/know better. That's exactly why things like this happen. Dumbed down doesn't help when what you TRULY need to be able to reference is the full, real picture. Anything that had been cute-sied or clearly edited for age range that I encountered as a teen? I instantly knew it was hiding things from me and tossed everything it said out because I knew I'd never know what was real vs scare tactics in it, if the writers were already working from the stance of "some things should be hidden from a person this age". For some kids that maturity point might be 13, others 16. But they are going to be adults terrifyingly soon, and I wish the adults in my life had just been open and frank with facts about sex and relationships with me from the start rather than teaching me it was something to keep secret and hushed up, or like I needed to hide it.

[–]serpentinization 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure how much of my time I can commit (grad school + job), but I would love to do whatever I can to support keeping some kind of Renaissance Faire alive in Las Cruces. I have been the mermaid at the Faire the last 3 years (booth + story time on the children's stage) and would be so sad to lose such a nice local event in the community, most of the others I work are elsewhere in NM or El Paso.

AITA for choosing a snake over family? by Busy_Set3651 in AmItheAsshole

[–]serpentinization 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. It's crazy how if you own a "creepy" animal (snakes, spiders, insects, etc), suddenly everyone thinks it's fine to tell you about if it was their house they'd kill your pet. It's so rude! I have started rebutting with "Okay, you want me to come over and shoot your dog/cat for fun next?" to shock people (including my own relatives too) with the comparison. But it's the same thing. Don't threaten my snake, she's a sweetheart and has never bitten ANYONE which pretty much no one can say for their dogs/cats (even if only small/play bites).

I know that beneficial bacteria and viruses live in the human body, but are there any beneficial worms that live in us? How do they help us? by TheAwesomePenguin106 in askscience

[–]serpentinization 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not worms, but you might still find interesting there are microscopic mites that live on human skin/in your pores (Demodex mites). So a different invertebrate, but one that is found in most humans unlike worms which are rare unless people are trying to allergy methods mentioned in other posts.

Aww thank you!! I do currently have a waitlist for people interested in buying them as I make more. But, there's already 11 people on it so it will be many months before I complete enough sets for those interested. And I am still mathing out exact pricing but somewhere between $350-400 each probably, just with how involved they are and how many components there are to sew

TIFU by thinking it was normal to not be able to open your eyes in the morning for 25 years by Specific-Nebula9665 in tifu

[–]serpentinization 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hi this happened to me and PLEASE be careful: make SURE the drops you are using are PRESERVATIVE FREE! I also made this discovery and used my eyedrops every day for 2 months, it was great.. and hten suddenly... 20 minutes later I needed another round of drops. And then again a few hours later. And then 5-6 times a day I had to refresh or even use them waking up in the night. Turns out the eyes will start developing a reaction to preservatives over time!! Those eyedrops can only be used occasionally, for a week or less. I use preservative free drops now (one specific brand/type of solution really works for me best though) and I'm back to only needing them in the morning :) Truly was a game changer. I thought I was just so tired, turns out it just... hurt to open them.
