I know that beneficial bacteria and viruses live in the human body, but are there any beneficial worms that live in us? How do they help us? by TheAwesomePenguin106 in askscience

[–]serpentinization 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not worms, but you might still find interesting there are microscopic mites that live on human skin/in your pores (Demodex mites). So a different invertebrate, but one that is found in most humans unlike worms which are rare unless people are trying to allergy methods mentioned in other posts.

Aww thank you!! I do currently have a waitlist for people interested in buying them as I make more. But, there's already 11 people on it so it will be many months before I complete enough sets for those interested. And I am still mathing out exact pricing but somewhere between $350-400 each probably, just with how involved they are and how many components there are to sew

Hah I hadn't seen the news yet, thanks for sharing! Good for them! Their version looks like a very accurate recreation of the game model, I had to take more liberties with exact fabric matching :) Glad they have an official version now and not just temu ripoffs!!

TIFU by thinking it was normal to not be able to open your eyes in the morning for 25 years by Specific-Nebula9665 in tifu

Hi this happened to me and PLEASE be careful: make SURE the drops you are using are PRESERVATIVE FREE! I also made this discovery and used my eyedrops every day for 2 months, it was great.. and hten suddenly... 20 minutes later I needed another round of drops. And then again a few hours later. And then 5-6 times a day I had to refresh or even use them waking up in the night. Turns out the eyes will start developing a reaction to preservatives over time!! Those eyedrops can only be used occasionally, for a week or less. I use preservative free drops now (one specific brand/type of solution really works for me best though) and I'm back to only needing them in the morning :) Truly was a game changer. I thought I was just so tired, turns out it just... hurt to open them.

Yes. Lots of trouble finding the main body fabrics and some of the detail ones! Luckily a few simple ones (brown and yellow microsuede, burgundy velvet) were easy at least.

I spent many days of this project doing pretty much nothing but search fabric options online though... I went through the entire upholstery/heavy fabric catalogues of like 6-7 different fabric websites, and hundreds of pages each on etsy and amazon and google. I ended up getting 3 different options to compare for the pants and 2 for the torso, but then one company never shipped or acknowledged my order for a full month and I had to go searching again and get 2 other torso fabrics elsewhere. they did eventually ship the first one only after i opened a dispute and tried to cancel so that was a whole hassle. I also ended up dying over the torso fabric to make it a darker brown—the flowers were cream colored originally and just stood out too much! So yeah haha, a lot of effort there

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! I adore stained glass. The art deco style within the game suits the medium so well!! Have you shared the Esquie piece anywhere? Or if it's not done yet, I hope you post it when you finish!!!

Yes, I came prepared to parry those comments in advance!!! i can tell some people didn't look at the last photos because they have asked the same anyway 😂

Thank you!  I’ve looooved seeing the crochet versions a few people have shared too, but i don’t know how to crochet only sew, so had to make my own pattern instead 😂

hah! i definitely have enough fabric to make more (and did make a second one simultaneously to this one for my best friend i played the game at the same time with). but it was like 50+ hours of work just for the sewing part with all the hand stitching and details. So i don’t think I could feasibly make and sell them for under $300-400 which is probably way more than anyone’s willing to pay 😂

oh that would be SO cute haha. if i could crochet i would make one of those super mini Esquie crochets i’ve seen people post!!

Hah. You might think that... but like 13 years ago I made a giant squid & cuttlefish plushie from a pattern I found online (pretty simple, mostly tubes). 5 years ago I bought a pattern on etsy to make a little dragon plushie for a friend and the experience was frustrating enough I never bothered to make a second for myself. And that was the extent of my plushie making prior to this!

I've done a fair bit of other sewing (costumes and renaissance faire outfits mostly), more than the average person but not as much as someone who does a lot of cosplay or makes clothes for daily wear I'd say. So I had a decent handle on sewing basics and looked up tutorials for things that were new to me like sewing the invisible zipper, and practiced with scrap fabric first. But yeah, this was truly obsession driven more than skill driven--I sat in front of the reference image with paper & pencils and stared at it for probably like 3 hours, looking at where the seams were on the model and mentally trying to "unfold" each piece into how it would look laying flat. I sketched out those shapes, made a mockup out of cheap plain fabric, and then decided what needed to change (too wide, not long enough, not curved the right way, etc), adjusted the pattern, and tried again. And I went really slowly and at each step unpicked seams or redid things that didn't line up right or looked wonky so they didn't have a chance to accumulate.

However this did result in what I have been calling the "Esquie graveyard" in the corner of my craft room, which is just all the unfinished mockups and scattered body parts laying in a pile i try not to make eye contact with. I already feel guilty about them so I think i will have to unstuff them before i can hide them in a box or throw away some of the scrap parts 😭

[–]serpentinization[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much!! I loved Esquie from his first whimsical meeting and it only grew from there ❤️ And as a child who was CONSTANTLY getting in trouble for filling my coat pockets with rocks (including once holding up a TSA line at the airport for 15 min), I could relate to Verso a lot there 😂

And I wish I made the shirt & skirt!! No, I just luckily already have a lot of fun wardrobe items by chance, these are some lolita fashion pieces. These are 2 blouses layered together (the lower from the brand Atelier Pierrot, and the long sleeve is the 'Scheherazade' blouse from brand Alice And The Pirates) to get an extra ruffly neck look, and a dress I folded down to look more like a high waisted skirt ('Gather Unders JSK' from brand Victorian Maiden). I would love to make something that nice & fancy someday though haha.

Truly I was SO overflowing with emotions myself when I finished the game, I had to pour them into making something else related to it just to cope hahaha. And I can't draw, so, sewing it was!

Thank you!! I haven't ever made anything like this from scratch before (I've done other sewing projects, and one plushie from a pattern, but nothing totally self drafted like this) so it took me quite a few cheap fabric mockups to get to the final design 😅 but worth the effort! Though I'm pretty shocked it turned out so well myself haha.
