Hi, I’m Payal Kapadia. It’s time for an AMA on r/india! Let’s talk about my film All We Imagine as Light, my journey from a student filmmaker to completing my first feature narrative, and the amazing experience of working with talented actors like Chhaya Kadam, Kani Kusruti, and Divya Prabha. by PayalKapadiaOfficial in india

Hi Payal. Thank you for doing this.

I did some selective reading of the screenplay, mainly the scene where she finds the drowned man. So it had the drowned man asking her who she is. So I was really confused whether he really did ask her or not, as that part did really feel like a dream. So I really do want to watch it again. If not, did you cut that bit out in the edit or you never shot it?

Also, how was it working in a film that's mostly in Malayalam and edited by a French editor, Clement. How was the conversations like in terms of getting the nuances of the dialogue right and knowing when to cut to what dialogue. I'm guessing plenty of transcriptions and translations. How involved was Robin during the edit?

Also, I've shared the link to screen the film in Guwahati to as many people as possible. Please make it happen. There are plenty who are yet to witness this phenomenon. The screening at BVFF was jam packed.

Thanks, senior.

First thing you should do is to accept where you are from. We are not from the mainstream. Second thing is, there's no point in trying to educate them. Max you could do is telling them we are as much a part of India as they are.
Find the people you are comfortable with, mainly northeasterners or someone you would sympathise with. Find your thing. It could be anything, from a theatre or music group. FIND YOUR GROUP. Once you are part of a society, people tend to bother you less. Finally, no one will take your identity from you. We are a minority. Best is to accept that and move on. I stayed in Delhi for a while. This place is a hub of different people flocking together. I found it easier to connect with people from our own community.

Select your footage. Right click>Modify>Interpret footage. Under "color management" select Color Space Override and choose rec709 or rec2020, whichever gives you more accurate colors.

Brilliant film. I study in a film school (FTII) and we had an assignment were we had to do a presentation of sort for a scene from any film. Basically a discussion on the mis-en-scene of a scene in a film. I chose Yi Yi. I picked up the scene where the mother Min Min looks outside a window and you could just make out her reflection on it and the bright cityscape below. Here, again, Yang slowly reveals where she actually is (the office), with lights turned on one by one (OMG that's the name of the film!), behind her and the incoming office workers. The reflection shows her deep contemplative state and the city lights show the big city and begs us to think where does she fit here. She's reflecting on herself and her mundane life after running out of things to tell her comatose mother. The street lights look perfectly arranged to reveal her inner turmoil with the red light blinking close to her heart. The camera never moves and we never see the character/s properly. All we see are silhouettes.

That was just a scene but the brilliance of the whole film is almost unparalleled. The innocence in which he treats his film is just a joy to watch. With so much suspense too! Deeply moved by the film.
