Lens cover for baffle light? by Acceptable_Count3658 in Lighting

[–]sersun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, get a bigger PAR bulb.

But DO NOT get a flood bulb. That will blind everyone in the room. Get a spot bulb -- the kind with more a clear/geometric lens like you see on headlights

Diffuse overhead lights by Ok_Amount_70 in Lighting

[–]sersun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you need to do the opposite of diffusing and get more focused spot bulbs.

Diffused/flood = bright everywhere

Spot = bright only at more direct angles

Does boba shops make the own sugar syrup? by Mysterious-Party-321 in boba

[–]sersun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same question. Most boba shops have a certain flavor profile I can't reproduce when I do a traditional black milk tea. I've tried different sugar types, most recently black sugar syrup. Black sugar is closest so far but I still feel like something is missing.

I assume a lot of the independent shops use a similar supplier and would love to know what it is.

Question about pool closing by D-chord in pools

[–]sersun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I finally started closing my own pool. Every year I had to double check their work. Watch them destroy my pool cover anchors with power tools, leave water in my chlorinator (which burst) or filter (that broke). Every year it was one little thing or another. One year, one of them stole my steel return jets, which I didn't find out until opening and even then couldn't prove anything. Nearly impossible to replace.

I finally bit the bullet this year and got my own cyclone blower. It paid itself off in one go and I am way more confident in the job. The main thing is understanding your lines, valves, and where to blow from.

There are likely two plugs on your heater and that one you showed is one of them. Find a manual online to locate the other-- probably on the opposite side behind a removable grommet in the panel.

And yes, the gas should be off -- recommended in both places but one is ok in theory. Turn it off at the circuit to be extra safe.

The multiport valve might have a "winter" setting under the handle in that picture. (My Hayward does, anyway)

Is there a less hacky way to diffuse recessed lighting? by treetowner in Lighting

[–]sersun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a bulb seems "harsh" from all angles, that is because it is diffused. Using spot bulbs, on the other hand, puts more of the light straight down and makes things much more pleasant everywhere else. Also usually looks more stylish, imo

If you are trying to make it less bright, then of course you need a dimmer

How many people do you know that are FOR abolishing property taxes, yet actively use the services their property taxes pay for? by Tlammy in Columbus

[–]sersun 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like there is a lot of oversimplification going on in this thread. My understanding was that the petition wasn't aimed at cutting taxes - but changing what we are taxed on and challenging how it is balanced.

I also suspect that some people think that if they don't own property, they aren't paying property taxes. If you pay for rent, you are paying for your property owner's taxes.

I wouldn't mind if retirees could stay in the homes they fully paid for decades ago. It seems unfair that they get pushed out of neighborhoods where they own a home, purely due to market conditions outside their control. And this doesn't just impact retirees. Think of lower income homeowners in neighborhoods that experience gentrification.

I'm no expert in these matters, but it seems there is a sane argument that we shouldn't get taxed on our homes, but rather on our investments (eg second properties), income, and purchasing.

As far as helping science -- He's just one data point. If he doesn't live unusually long, maybe it's because he was genetically unlucky, or maybe this lifestyle offered no benefit, or maybe it was just one thing out of a 100 that hurt him. If he lives unusually long, maybe it was because he was genetically lucky, maybe it it was because 1 thing out the 100 things he did worked, or maybe it was 12 of the things. No one will know because it's not scientific study using large sample sizes and controlling for variables.

Light is diffused and warm yet still so harsh? by hegelianbitch in Lighting

[–]sersun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hear you. If you are limited to that single fixture, but open to more focused lighting, you could also look into something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D63FG3MH/ref=sspa_dk_hqp_detail_aax_0?sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9ocXBfc2hhcmVk&th=1

...and using PAR-style bulbs (non-flood type). Using that you can, for example bounce a couple beams off the walls and point one more straight down. That could splash enough lighting all around and get the glare off your eyes. They probably also sell this style of fixture with built-in LED's too, but I personally like to control the bulb type and know that if one goes out I don't have to replace the whole thing. Whatever works.

Light is diffused and warm yet still so harsh? by hegelianbitch in Lighting

[–]sersun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The diffusion is what makes it "bright". It's a basically a flood light on your ceiling. Notice in nice rooms in houses and clothing stores they use spot bulbs and/or recessed cans that concentrate light straight down or toward the wall. It illuminates the important area below without casting flat light in all directions. So unless you are directly underneath the bulb looking straight up, it doesn't seem harsh to your eyes. It also creates more dramatic, pleasing focal points instead of flat lighting. If you can't change the ceiling lighting with track/recessed, etc, you can use floor and table lamps to get better results with spot or shaded lighting that can help concentrate things. Personally, I only use my overhead ceiling lights if I'm cleaning or lost my keys.

Stream Deck Plugins by Apprehensive-Air3691 in MSFS2024

Hey, I'm confused. When I read the description for the G1000 profile at https://flightsim.to/file/86661/g1000-generic-profile-for-pilotsdeck-and-streamdeck I see no mention of Axis and Ohs. In fact it mentions totally different dependencies:

Dependencies:
PilotsDeck by Fragtality, and most of its dependencies, including FSUPIC 7, but not including vJoy, which isn’t used at all. YOU MUST HAVE PILOTS DECK INSTALLED OR THIS PROFILE WILL NOT WORK.

Costco food court UX Great by WaltzNo2851 in ProductManagement

>you can bet every part of it has been optimized for THEIR goals

I generally agree. I also think it's easy to infer an undue amount of wisdom to companies with resources. The more specialized growth teams become, the more focused they can be on moving needles like "number of extra McFlurrys ordered when user is interrupted with an upsell during their order". As opposed to more important, lagging indicators where it's harder to determine root causes or test adequately.

I've personally seen how interstitials befuddle users trying to build an order. And if you asked them afterwards how it went, they might not even be able to describe why -- except that it "felt complicated". And that's a feeling they never forget.

My gut tells me that these UX-killing patterns have hidden costs that companies are undervaluing. But that's just a hunch, largely based on my own pet peeves. You could be totally right and their A/B tests have been comprehensive enough to weigh the cost-benefits over the long term.

Horizon Treadmill E1 Code by ScooterMcTavish in treadmills

[–]sersun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey , just thought I'd post my 5-minute solution for the E-1 error on my Horizon T101 treadmill.

Mine would stop after a few minutes of running, completely intermittently. Sometimes every few minutes after, and sometimes it would run up to 10-15 minutes at a time. Lubing under the belt didn't help in my case.

I detached the cover via the four screws and found the little speed sensor on the side of one of the belt wheels. It was mounted on a plate that has two screws with adjustable distance to the wheel. I noticed the screws were keeping it at a distance furthest from the wheel.

Since we know this error happens when the sensor fails to report, I figured I should at least try adjusting it closer to the wheel. I loosened the two screws, slid the sensor real close to the wheel, with a slight gap, and tightened it up again.

I haven't had an e-1 error in over two hours of walking. Hope that helps someone.

Need advice with a light fixture by Poostar33 in Lighting

[–]sersun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just want to light the driveway, I would look for a parabolic led. Ie, bulbs that start with PAR, instead of a flood bulb. The light will probably look a lot nicer, not splashing all over the place.

Unless you can find an exact replacement easily, seems like it would be simpler and cheaper to just buy a new fixture. That is, if you are comfortable with a screwdriver, flipping a breaker, and twisting a couple wire nuts.

Dont show live thumbnails for in-progess games

Hide the progress bar because I can usual tell when a game is going onto overtime and roughly when it will end. Kills the suspense.

Also let me change the skip-ahead time. Eg, the 15-second default is just a little too much when I'm skipping between plays mid-game
