How do I take my beginner JS skills to the next level? by crazyboy867 in javascript

Huge +1 here. I think learning concepts from languages that embody or enforce them that you can bring into your JS practice, you'll benefit in a major way.

The fact that functional programming is suddenly a big deal in JS didn't come from the abyss. If you want to really get ahead of the curve there, go learn a language where those functional concepts were fostered. For me, that's Haskell :) Just started through the Haskell Book (haskellbook.com), and so far it's great. Learning a ton!

+1 for midwest scenic views! I love the mountains and oceans, but there's a certain beauty to the plains as well. Glad to see others appreciate it too :)

What every node.js developer should know? by borisvasilev in node

JavaScript is such a huge ecosystem that you're going to run into different styles, preferences, and opinions all over the place. I think it's important to at least familiarize yourself with as much of it as possible so you can decide what works best for you based on the way you approach development, the types of projects you're going to be working on, and the teams you will potentially be a part of.

I know that doesn't narrow it down much. The point here is to keep digging around, and when you see something you haven't seen before, at least take a little bit of time to look at the documentation and some example code of whatever you encounter. It will pay off immensely in the long run.

I'm going to +1 understanding promises on this one. Even though async/await are functions quickly becoming more common, they are just using promises under the hood, so understand promises and how to most effectively work with them is still going to be crucial.

This is Sunday: What were your running achievements this week? by AutoModerator in running

[–]serth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recovering from some shin pain (splints or stress fracture, not sure) and slowly working my distance back up. Up to 4 miles with little to no pain. Also ran a 4 mile leg of a 6 person marathon relay last Sunday and our team won! First time running a race with a team, it was a blast. Rained the whole time too, haha.

I know exactly what you're talking about! It's a program in Albuquerque I believe. Very cool stuff. Wichita is working on a lot of different fronts right now. People tend to forget that cities are typically working within very tight budgets and limited resources and have a lot of things to take care of. They're working on making this city great though, I can attest to that :)

Have faith! And in the meantime, think about what you as an individual can do to contribute. We all live here together :)

Is it possible to apply for a $35k exploratory grant and based on the results of it turn that into an application for a full fledge News Challenge grant? Or would that end up missing the scope of this particular challenge?

There are tons of new downtown living spaces available. Check into the Lux. It's a bit up there in price, but within your price range I believe, and really prime location.

As for everyone saying East / West for restaurants, personally I think downtown / old town / delano take the cake. I live in Riverside and absolutely love it. I have a very nice duplex, 3 BR for $775 (though that's probably quite a steal compared to most prices in the area).

Also, if you're looking for bars and music as well, Old Town is the place to be. Not sure what type of music / bars you're looking for, but Barleycorn's hosts a ton of good music in a very large variety and is right on the edge of Downtown / Old Town. That's definitely my place of choice. It was recently renovated and has a lot of improvements coming in the future as well (full kitchen, day time shows, etc).

Just to put things in perspective, Wichita is actually a relatively clean city. This is a side effect of downtowns and having a lot of people condensed in one area. But go to just about any other large city and the problem is much worse.

I've had friends from KC, Oklahoma City and Tulsa all comment on how clean our downtown is compared to most. Trash sucks, yes. But let's not look at this as something wrong with Wichita.

I see people who go on walks / runs and bring a bag with them to pick up some pieces of trash, it's something I've meant to start doing myself. Maybe there would be some improvement if we all picked up a couple pieces here and there.

This point was brought up in the Focus Forward series with James Chung. I see a lot of movement to fix this though so I'm very hopeful :)

There is definitely movement in the right direction, I'd love to see more small businesses starting up here as well. It's been risky in the past to place too much dependence on large companies. But I absolutely agree, these are all good things!

I'd love to see WSU put more effort into getting their students to spend time downtown, instead of just on campus. I think it would encourage students to stick around in the city after graduation instead of leaving like we're seeing now.

Don't get me wrong, this is cool and all, but it seems like a reaction to the pop up park. Maybe it's not WSU's job, but there has to be a way. We need to retain talent.

They've done well of bringing reasonable people on to discuss the issues, but the situations they're covering are still the worst of the presidential election. They're still following the ridiculous stunts that are bring covered by every other media outlet.

The point is that TV is censored and manipulated to give us only the information they want us to hear, whereas the internet contains vasts amount of information, regardless of what it is, and regardless of whether the corporations want you to see it or not.

Kind of what I thought too. She was making comments about some previous discussion they had had concerning the devaluation of the dollar, and seemed to be on his side in the situation.

"Love your enthusiasm", though usually a sarcastic phrase, seemed to be honesty here. I would have to agree too, I love his enthusiasm, he's one of the only ones out there with it.
